Aesthetix Io vs Lamm LP2
I haven't had any experience with the Io. I have had both the Lamm L-1 preamp and the LP-2, which I still have. Although "dark" is a gross over-simplification, that MIGHT be applied to the L-1, but absolutely not to the LP-2, which is extraordinar...
HDCD & SACD
Classe Omega--great player, but $12,000.
Which are the top DVD-A players?
If you're going to rule out universal players, you are pretty much left with the Meridian, which costs a fortune. The Esoteric DV-50 universal player has very good CD performance, but can be beaten by a number of more costly units; has excellent SA...
DVD-A player that'll output 24/96 digital signal
Same experience. My Esoteric DV-50 can be set to output 24/96, and I have done so, but the manual says it can do it only on discs which permit it. It is hooked up to a digital input on a dCS Purcell, which displays the incoming data stream. On mor...
Esoteric DV-50 vs Denon DVD9000
I haven't tried the Denon, but I have compared the Esoteric to the Marantz DV-8400, which has gotten quite good reviews on sound. The Marantz was very respectable on CD and SACD and impressive on DVD-A. The Esoteric is on another level altogether-...
I am considering the purchase of a Marantz DV8400
Hi. I did an extensive trial of the DV-8400 because I wanted DVD-A and thought this was a reasonable ($) way to add it. I already had top quality SACD and CD. I was impressed with the sound in all three foremats, especially DVD-A. However both SAC...
Any WARM, MUSICAL speakers out there?
Hi. I was auditioning a digital component at a dealer recently, and he played it through Classe components and a pair of smallish Dali floorstanding speakers. The sound was extraordinarily warm and rich. You might see if anyone near you carries Da...
Replacing stock tonearm cable
My SME V came with a Van den Hul cable. Nevertheless I have substituted Cardas, Purist and HMS cables for the original cable, all with significant improvements. You can argue that it's the most important cable in the system.
When do records damage a stylus
If a defect is bad enough to cause damage, it is more likely to do it by jarring the stylus loose from the shank than any other way. (Yes, I've heard of it happening, once to a Grado, and once to a Koetsu, no less.) Anyone who plays a record with ...
CAM 350 vs Omega Ref vs 450 vs Mono vs Omicron
Jim: I used 350's with my Andras, and they were an excellent match; the Andras demand power and the 350's just put it out. I recommend them highly. However, I had the Andras rebuilt by Eggleston to Andra II's for $2750 plus $500 shipping, and ther...
Universal Players. Marantz 8400 vs.Denon 5900
Haven't heard the Denon, but there was a recent comparison done here by someone of the two players. Plug "Marantz DV8400" into Discussion Forums and it will come up. As to the Marantz itself, there is a very favorable short blurb on it under Recom...
DVD/CD/SACD player advice needed
I second the recommendation to the Marantz DV8400, a wonderful unit for the money--SACD, CD, DVD-A and video.
Athena ML-1 Polyphasor : Any idea what this does?
Well, the only problem is, there were no cables built in to any model I ever saw. Of course, that means that it doubled your cable costs as well. Either this was a version done late in the production run, or a special order, or a do-it-yourself ad...
Athena ML-1 Polyphasor : Any idea what this does?
I had a bunch of them 15-20 years ago. Different ones were more or less complex, and went in different places in the system. The basic idea, as I remember dimly after all this time, was that higher frequencies tend to travel through cable more qui...
Sony SCD-1 can't read Multichannels Hybrid SACDs
I never had this problem on the SCD-1. I now have a Classe Omega, which is built on the same transport as the Sony, and it also has never had any problem with multichannel hybrids. Your player needs to go to an authorized service center or repairer.
