Tweaking the Magnepan 1.7s
Good for you, Josh. Try 'em all 4 ways for that matter....tweeter in / out and Mylar front/back. I wonder if Magnepan started shipping with the tweeter resistor at about the same time as they flipped 'em to pole piece back? I've tried absolute pha...
Maggie 1.7's?
Maybe the Mac folks down the street will loan me one for a couple days?I gotta try this for myself!
Matching speaker to amplifier?
Impedance and sensitivity, in my opinion are less important than phase angle of the load across frequency.Tube amps do not like certain reactive loads. Some SS won't produce the goods, either. If a speaker were 100db sensitive, and had a huge phas...
Maggie 1.7's?
Aolprodj,You are the FIRST person I've ever seen post with a Maggie / Mac combo. I know their must be more, but I simply have not seen it in print. ........Do you think the MA6900 has enough guts? I don't do ear-bleed levels?
This is no joke.
Fpeel,Being a general malcontent, I would be the last person to demand conformance or PC behavior. I personally just try to suppress my sarcastic or nasty, ill humored urges. I just try to be nice, and while I'm not always successful, I try to be ...
Maggie 1.7's?
The bass is there. Just not down to sub basement levels like a good sub. for MOST music this is no problem. Lowest note on a non-Bosendorfer Piano is about 27hz, so LOTS of speakers considered audiophile won't do it. Pipe organ? down to a nutty 16...
This is no joke.
Thanks, Dekay. I thought I was alone.I have a reputation as an extremely NON-PC person. But when I do poor taste stuff......I at least have a grip on my audience. I won't pull that crap in a public forum...generally.
Tweaking the Magnepan 1.7s
WSlam.Just keep any drunks from knocking them over.On a Serious note, check out MYE stands. They have a following and the claims are reasonable. Also, Magnepan is a DIY dream speaker. Crossover? Stands? Reframe? all have followers.I recently rotat...
Maggie 1.7's?
Like the 1.7s? You'll love a pair of heavily modded 1.6s......Wood frames to replace the MDF and rotated to pole piece forward. Some even modify the crossover. And I mean an all-new designFor the price difference, if you are at all handy with wood...
magnepan experimenting
I rotated my 1.6s a few months ago when I realized that Magnepan had flipped 'em around in the mid-90s. My original MG-1s were mylar back and I liked 'em lots....even though they were something like.....50hz to 18khz. no better. When I did the rota...
o-ring size for 12AX7 & AT7 dampers?
Post back, or PM me, please.I have looked at several sites and gotten various answers on temp tolerance of the various elastomers. I don't even care what they will chemically 'put up with'. Some don't like gasoline or acetone or alcohol or whateve...
solid state vs tubes
The difference between 'old' Maggies and 'new' is the difference between pole piece forward and mylar forward. The old way, IMO was better. My original MG-1s had a character and feel about them not equaled by my 1.6s, until I did a rotate-in-place....
o-ring size for 12AX7 & AT7 dampers?
Tubes must run a bunch cooler than I thought. Even output tubes. Viton, if memory serves, doesn't take to heat as well as silicon. I have seen, under EXTREME conditions, NEVER to be found in the home, that an oil will leach out of silicon rings. N...
Best DAC for 27" iMac
If you can get a bit-perfect copy from a compressed format, which you can with Apple Lossess and FLAC, than go for the (storage) space saving. The 30% to 40% reduction in file size allowed by FLAC or ALAC are worth it and don't compromise playback.
o-ring size for 12AX7 & AT7 dampers?
I thought this over.....and low power / pre tubes probably run cooler than output tubes. Don't have numbers in front of me, but silicon is pretty good....Do you get the 'red' silicon? It has oil in the binder which CAN come out at elevated temps. ...
