Turntable upgrade recommendations: SME vs AMG vs Technics vs other I would love to hear or even read about a head to head comparison between the MC2000 and the Verissimo. Not at all because I dream the MC2000 is better but only because that would be a great way to dissect out the improvements that nearly 30 years...
Technics SP-10mk2 oscillations Rays, you’re not the first guy to make this mistake, so don’t feel bad about it. I hope your SP10 was not damaged. Most likely it was not if you ran it only briefly sans platter.
Brian Eno's Turntable Design How about Picasso or Dali as TT designers? I’d buy those, even if they didn’t work.
VPI tonearm length improvement It's only an opinion. Chances are you WOULD hear a difference just because setting up a cartridge never comes out the exact same way twice. And possibly because the 10-inch version of your tonearm will have a slightly higher effective mass.
Turntable upgrade recommendations: SME vs AMG vs Technics vs other And yet, some of those verboten match-ups would work fine in actual practice. As regards Raul's last post, the Ypsilon, which is indeed a very transparent phono stage, one of the best I have heard, makes only 39db of gain, which is barely enough ...
VPI tonearm length improvement To your question, no or only if by chance you were to do a better job of set-up .
A $349 record brush Dust is probably at the molecular level, so it's obviously overkill.
Have a Victor UA-7045 tonearm coming VE is not the most reliable source, either. But that's interesting to know. Perhaps that is where I first noticed the recommendation to use the UA7045 with high compliance cartridges, mentioned above.
Technics SP-10mk2 oscillations What Best-groove said. What you observed, rays, is normal and not a good idea in practice. The servo system needs the mass of the platter in order to operate properly. The herky jerky motion of the rotor without any mass on it is what to expect.
Turntable upgrade recommendations: SME vs AMG vs Technics vs other The belt drive analog of that philosophy is also coupling a very weak motor to a very heavy platter, first done by both Walker Audio and Nottingham Analog. There is a stock argument against that approach, but I don't pretend to know whether it ho...
Turntable upgrade recommendations: SME vs AMG vs Technics vs other terry, But you want the motor to affect speed, when the speed drifts away from constancy. So, in your first paragraph, are you making a virtue or a problem out of "torque". I am not sure what you meant. Could be you are saying that to couple a l...
Have a Victor UA-7045 tonearm coming I think it's one of those cases where someone at some time mentioned here that the UA7045 was suitable for high compliance cartridges, and from that moment forward it became a "fact". I was surprised to read that statement, because by eye the UA7...
Turntable upgrade recommendations: SME vs AMG vs Technics vs other Here is a bad thing about a spring-suspended DD turntable: The energy put into rotation of the platter is also going to twist the chassis on its suspension, in the direction opposite to platter rotation (counter-clockwise). That is why it’s a good...
Dynavector Karat 17D3: retip for $500 or get something new? Needlestein, if my MMC1 looks perfect under my microscope and if it doesn’t collapse at its standard 1.0g VTF, may I assume it’s ok? I recently noticed some distortion and I’m trying to track down the source.
How to identify my weakest link? Ears are attached to a brain. It’s been shown many times that hearing acuity is only part of the way in which we perceive live music or an audio system SQ. Prior experience and self training count for a lot. Albeit deaf is deaf. Just ask. Beethoven. |
