Thoughts on moving from a 1200G to Sota Saphire or above
IMO, a dead strobe bulb on an SP10 mk2 is no great loss and would not affect function. Also, by saying I thought the SME V is superior to the stock G tonearm I certainly did not mean to denigrate the latter. I am sure it’s very good too.
What angle should I set the VTA on my VPI turntable?
Dear lutke, I don’t know about your model, but throw it out. Now think that you and a friend are carrying a sofa. On level ground, the burden is equally shared. Now you have to carry the sofa up a staircase. Who is working harder? The guy at the t...

in my opinion, the SOTA turntable would need the eclipse motor upgrade in order to get near to the SL1200 G in terms of speed stability. The electronic fly wheel business makes a nice story. On the other hand, the SMEV tonearm is almost certainly ...

But if you replace VTA with VTF in cleeds post, the statement is correct, tail up, VTF up.
Measuring "Stylus Drag" with the RPM Speed and Wow app
Yes, the tachometer will show you the frequency of speed correction that is needed to maintain 33.333 rpm in spite of stylus drag, in addition to actual platter speed. The Eclipse add on is constantly correcting for such forces. When there is a lo...

+1 to what pinDAC wrote. A big advantage of the KAB is battery power.

9 out of 10 of us wouldn’t be able to measure SRA accurately even with a USB microscope. For most of us that method would be a waste of time and money, unless maybe one has been trained by an experienced person, like MF or Peter L. This has been s...

No point in our getting into a private back and forth here, but please do not take what I wrote as a criticism or an insult.  Most of all, I would not insult your cartridge collection.  I hope you would admit that you are a champion of MM and MI c...

Chakster, I must say I am impressed by your level of certainty, at times.  You wrote, "Additional headshell pins and even a DIN connector on a tonearm will not change the sound of a great tonearm/cartridge."  How can you, or anyone, know this for ...

sbank, Crazily, I admit, I have multiple turntables up and running and just as many tonearms.  I use two with fixed headshells, Reed and Triplanar, and three with removable headshells.  When I want to experiment with different cartridges, I am dra...

The audio establishment sold us the idea that headshells were inherently unstable mounted at the end of an arm wand, so now we’ve got a lot of expensive tonearms with fixed headshells. Around the same time they sold us the idea that bass and trebl...

Better to buy the KAB strobe disc and the battery powered strobe light that goes with. Can use with any TT and is much more accurate than any built in strobe on our vintage DD TTs. But that will only give you a qualitative answer that you can verb...

Not that I care a lot, but I disagree that actual data would be worthless. I think it would be interesting. However I do not think it will ever happen because of the necessary controls that we really as a group cannot put into affect.

The inertia of the platter, the torque available from the motor, the particular musical passage, the position of the stylus on the LP surface relative to the spindle, the cartridge, etc., etc. These are all factors that would influence any measure...
SUT Advice - Which Ones Are The Best?
A coil inevitably has inductance. However there are some tricks of winding that can minimize it, as in Mills resistors. Otherwise wirewound resistors are inductive. It’s the law.
