Finally...subwoofer that's aesthetically pleasing!
Do I retire or buy a set of these?  Decisions, decisions.... 😁
Quick System Building Pop Quiz:
It depends. If the system is very good, I’d definitely pursue optimizing it. It’s a great way to make subtle personalized changes to suit your tastes and room. I chose that path 30 years ago with what I thought was a really nice sounding system, a...
How does bi-wiring work?
It was cheap and easy for me to try. and thought it might offer some benefit, so I did it. Never compared single wire since. At worst, I doubled the wire gauge and added minor wire cost....at best, it sounds wonderful so I leave it as-is and enjoy...
My Four Favorite SS Amps
Did not know Vandersteen made any amps!  Every system I've ever heard with the CAT SL-1 was amazing, and those mated to the CAT tube amps have been mind blowing.
Maggies and subwoofer integration
A sub should work out fine once you get it adjusted for the situation.  Every room and setup is different, so you'll want to experiment with placement, gain levels, low pass levels, and polarity.  I'd hesitate to go any higher than 80hz as a low p...
Do You Buy Speakers Without Hearing Them?
Good speakers can be quite expensive. If I hope to keep them long term, I’d definitely want to listen to them first, or ensure there’s a 100% return option. Speakers are so subjective and personal, and they behave differently in different rooms an...
Cary vs Raven
In order to buy what you hope is your last amplifier, it's better to have what you know are your last speakers.  Given how radically different the two speakers are, you'll want to be absolutely sure about the Klipsch before you sell the Totems. I ...
Accurate Sibilants: The Ultimate Audio Challenge?
I don’t know why either, but agree that it’s one characteristic that can become the least tolerable, and can quickly motivate a music change or even a system change if it’s prevalent. I know that vocal sibilants can be difficult to smooth out wit...
Why do we demand so much from our systems?
Our threshold of what’s suitable evolves with time and experience. As our systems become more refined, what used to be good is no longer satisfactory.  I want my system to trick my mind into thinking I’m listening to actual music.
list of speakers
Very cool...lots of good info there.  That's a great reference.  I never knew there was so many great speakers that aren’t particularly efficient, yet can still sound amazing.
Is more amp power always better...?
My advice is not to focus exclusively on the watts. A lot of mediocre amps are made to meet a big spec, but not necessarily play well in a system. A better amp and bigger amp aren't necessarily the same thing. All watts are not created equal. You ...
Upgraded my cables and they transformed my system!!!
Good on ya, and congrats! I’ve been there...cables matter IMO, and price isn’t a great predictor of synergy with any given system. As far as the accusations of confirmation bias...long term listening will confirm or disprove that in the end, so n...
Is Anyone Using Subwoofers the Same Size as Their Mids?
What are the speakers you're using?
Integrateds: Luxman vs. Ayre?
Haven't heard the Ayre integrated, but was a big fan of Charlie Hanson.  I'd be shocked if it wasn't really good.
Your greatest high end audio purchase!!!
Like you and many others, I began this quest in the early 80s with a receiver and decent speakers. Many amplifiers and speakers later, the hobby eventually led me to working with Merlin International speakers, and then a speaker business of my own...
