Newbie Question
I wouldn't bother with vintage amps. Yes, some were built to very high standards, some were not. Problem is it can be difficult to determine just what you're really getting when buying a vintage unit. Sellers can make all sorts of false claims abo...
Life After Your Magnepan’s
Having lived with the .7s for a few months now, I've concluded they're long-term keepers for me, especially considering I'm not stuck with them as my sole pair. Absolutely love the .7s. If you think Maggies can't do slam, you need to hear this mod...
Holy Brightness Batman!
@helomech "Many speakers are voiced to impress during a quick audition, often with a "smiley" EQ.I'm convinced there are also brands/models for which the target market is older audiophiles who may need speakers with boosted highs in order to hear ...
Holy Brightness Batman!
Speaker designs marketed for older audiophiles ? Really ? Ridiculous. Apparently you know little about marketing strategies. Today's marketing managers are adept at targeting specific customer types. My post was referring to speakers like Golden E...

Sight and Sound Question
Hasn't been my experience. Case in point: I really like the looks of Harbeth cabinets - the eucalyptus veneer option and the sort of new-meets-old contrast of their driver frames and offset ports. But after comparing them to a competitor I settled...
Are Focal Aria 926 considered to be a Hi-Fi speaker?
I haven't heard the 926 but have had extensive auditions of the 936. IMO, they were not even "good for the price." Their MSRP is $4K and on balance, they sounded no better than $2K competition from Revel, Magnepan, B&W and Monitor Audio. I thi...
Which material sounds better for speakers construction? Wood, Ply or MDF?
Good quality MDF doesn't need finishing on both sides. You can leave the inside surface bare.
Life After Your Magnepan’s
Try the largest Spatial Audio model you can afford. If bass is too light, they can be augmented with open-baffle subs like those designed by GR Research.
DAC upgrade, new or used, $1000
Check out the Topping D90 - one of the best measuring DACs on the market.
Salk bookshelf or Dynaudio bookshelf? Or something else?
Salk makes such a wide range of products, with a wide range of driver types, that I think it’d be impossible to ascribe a house sound. It appears that linear frequency response is one of their design goals, but that doesn’t mean all their speakers...
Salk bookshelf or Dynaudio bookshelf? Or something else?
What you should decide first is which room/system you want to upgrade, or where the speakers will ultimately end up. Will they be in the larger room? The smaller room? Placed close to the wall, or well into the room?A small bookshelf like the Evok...
Buying ProAc’s Online or thru non-local dealer
Haven’t bought any ProAcs but Audio Concepts in Dallas carries the line and I had a great experience with their staff. They had several demo models on their floor. Might be worth a call.
Which belt-driven table to play Rock vinyl?
I recently upgraded as well. Similar thoughts to your described needs and also in the same budget. I do listen to a lot of Jazz Fusion as well as Classic Rock . However, there is no heavy metal or rap in my collection.I really wanted to go VPI as ...
Mytek slams Hypex in Stereophile Amp Review
I’d like to share a contrasting viewpoint to Helomech’s. I’ve had several amps driving my Magnepan 1.6s/1.7s over the years. Of course, these speakers demand lots of current from an amp. I had never given much attention to Class D amps, as most th...
