Vibraphone recommendations? Some of the late Milt Jackson recordings are excellent - The last two 'Very Tall Band' recordings with Ray Brown and Oscar Peterson on Telarc come to mind.
Favourite ECM Titles Pat Methany 80/81 which features the late great Dewey Redman on tenor sax. I'm not a big Methany fan but this record is SO compelling. Typically beautiful ECM recording quality. I have it on vinyl. It has been reissued on cd but I can't attest to ...
Interconnects for Musical Fidelity A3.2 system I have and MF Nuvista M3 and I'm using Nordost Blue Heavens. Very nice sounding. Transparent, tight bass. Good value used here on a-gon.
Bass rant It might be the quality of the reproduction too. A mediocre amp might not drive a speaker well enough to get the slam or physicality at moderate volumes. I agree though, there are a lot of people who seem to equate 'Boomba Boomba' with good bass, ...
MF NuVista M3 Phono Stage And the answer is: with the top off, on the circuit board just in front of the RCA jacks is VERY small switch - about a third of an inch - with two buttons on it. Push buttons to MC ON and thats it. This p-stage is really good too. Better than the...
MF NuVista M3 Phono Stage Thanks guys! Does anyone have any idea where the switch is, or better yet, have a picture of it so I know what I'm looking for when I open this thing up?
Book Review: Thelonious Monk, The Life and Times.. I found myself listening to the records chronologically as they were discussing them in the book. It was fun to hear the progression, not only in the songs but also in the recording quality.
This is a silly hobby. On the other hand, I just stuck those new cables in my system - LAT International SS-1000 mk II - and even cold and unburnt they sound terrific. Smoother, better bass, more detail, etc. It's just a stupid computer anyway.
This is a silly hobby. Great responses. You'll notice that my opinion that this was silly didn't stop me from ordering the cables. And yeah, I've got more money in my system than in my wife's wedding rings, although not quite as much as the car. I'm working on it though.
Looking for new speakers? Try the Spendor S8e. Terrific speaker in your price range, although I admit bias, as I own a pair. Fantastic mid-range. Solid bass. Smooth highs. Everytime I upgrade something in my system they get better and better, no matter what I throw at them...
Speakers for bad rock recordings Have you tied the dashboard speaker out of a '74 Buick?
Sota sapphire platter won't spin Take off the motor cover - the small wood or plastic piece that has the buttons and knobs on it to the left of the platter - and check to see if the belt is on the motor spindle. If not, or if there is not belt, or if the motor doesn't turn when y...
Re-Assessing RVG Sorry if I wasn't clear. As I said in the original post, for the most part the sound quality has gotten pretty good in my system, except for that horrid piano. That doesn't make them great recordings the way, say, Jazz at the Pawnshop or a good Te...
Re-Assessing RVG JimJoyce - in the case of RVG recordings I'd have to disagree. Jazzcourier is absolutely right. There are the odd RVG recordings that are more naturally mixed - Coltrane's Blue Trane comes to mind - but for the most part they were recorded as desc...
Re-Assessing RVG The few vinyl reissues that I have are excellent, but $50 a pop is a lot of money for a record. I understand that someone is issuing XRCDs of old Blue Notes shortly. That will be worth checking out. |
