Have you Heard MONK at the IT club on Mosaic LP? The Black Lion's are excellent - at least after they trimmed his finger nails so you couldn't hear them on the keys. I don't think its naive to suggest that the Rouse lineup got stale. A lot of the playing reflects that. There is plenty of video o...
Cambridge 840C as a DAC Face, When you say a 'Sound Card' is that something I can connect to my computer through a usb output that then has the appropriate digital connections for the 840?
Cambridge 840C as a DAC My laptop isn't a Mac, but obviously my iPhone is. I'd rather be running out of the pc.
Have you Heard MONK at the IT club on Mosaic LP? The book is REALLY good. Strongly suggested reading. The IT Club dates are good, but - like the Rouse lineup in general - not Monk's peak performance. Some of it sounds stale, like they're just playing through it. Give me the 40s Blue Notes and th...
Best Christmas Album A little late here, but I just downloaded Charlie Parker & co playing White Christmas in about 1948. Its off a live Savoy set. It really swings!
Lp's you'd like to see remastered Although they were digital recordings in the first place, I'd love to see someone do something with the DIW jazz catalogue. It was an 80's Japanese label that featured David Murray, among others. They're really good recordings, they're hard to fin...
Any Zorn fans? There was a Masada Quartet featuring Joe Lovano that came out this past year which is accessible, interesting and beautifully recorded. There's a bit of free-jazz/klezmer in there that's fantastic.
What music do you use to audition new gear? I take the best recordings I can, but in addition I always take at least one early 1960s vintage Rudy Van Gelder Blue Note recording. They all have very similar recording qualities - the awful piano that sounds like its in a box, and often too muc...
Recommendation for speaker wire upgrade I just put a set of LAT International SS1000 Mk IIs in my system and they really are terrific for the $$. Smooth, detailed, full sounding and very transparent. Can't say enough about them.
Server/DAC Newbie Question I downloaded and burned a copy of Oscar Peterson's 'The More I See You' on Telarc to compare to the factory cd, which I've had for years. The downloaded/burned version **maybee** gave up a hair in the highs, but most of the low level stuff - Oscar...
Server/DAC Newbie Question Thanks for the responses. I think one of the reasons I can't tell the difference is that I'm not using the Cambridge. It's in the shop. I'm playing these through my Jolida JD100 which is very warm and not overly detailed. I'll be curious to see wh...
Jolida JD-100 vs. Ayre CX-7E NOS tubes are definately produce good results in the JD100. The stock tubes are ok, but you can get a HUGE improvement for not so much $$ by swaping them out.
Review: Spendor S8e Speaker Yeah, the Cambridge needed about 100 hours of break-in before it sounded good. I just set it on repeat for a week and left it running. It has fantastic bass. It is very sensitive to cables and power cords. It had some harshness in the treble that ...
Is an anti-static gun necessary? I've got a zero-stat gun. It works well. Can't say that I'd die without it, but it is handy.
best small combo jazz recordings on vinyl The 45 RPM of Coltrane's Blue Trane is fantastic. Couldn't go wrong there. |
