Conrad Johnson PV12 AL
Yes, you may very well need to stand them up.  Depends which direction you go. :) Plan on standing them up and adding an extension.  So, a little soldering, and maybe a little heat shrink, with some solid copper core.  Also will need a dab of hot ...
Conrad Johnson PV12 AL
The PV12 used a 3 stage power supply. A pre-regulator fed a separate regulator for each side. In addition to putting in better caps, or bypassing existing, adding some heat sinks to the regulators (really just transistors) could be useful in incre...
Speaker wattage question
@chrisg1000 The key is to be sensitive to the sound quality.  The speakers will first compress, then distort, when you approach their real limits. Keep them sounding well and you can attach a 2,000 watt amp with no problem. :) Best,Erik
Another 'Which Amp' Question
So the question is, do you really need the Parasound A21 or is the A23 (125/ch) as good? The latter is available at 1K new, $600-$700 used.  It is also much easier to hide. :) Best,Erik
inexpensive USB-SPDIF converter for Windows 10
sound cards often include ground loops. Bad usb is not a myth, but usually not a problem either. early, or cheap usb solutions had poor isolation or were synchronous.  qindows users often suffered from bit mangling caused by downsampling or digita...
advice- DACs with Tubes, Or??? budget
i just realised these are active speakers.  My suggestion wont work. Why not just try tone controls?  You could dobit purely in the digital domain with a minidsp
Best Component Ever, for the money
Hmmm, so no bona-fide acoustic treatments? Used B&O ICEPower 250 ASP amplifier modules, which I scored for a ridiculous price of around $100 / each. Essentially I got very nice 125 watt monoblocks for around $300 each, including cases. About 1...
SVS Ultra *vs* LCR-750
I haven't heard either, but SVS appears to be using Peerless fiberglass mid-woofers, which are pretty outstanding for the price, so that would be my vote. The tweeters and crossovers could suck though! But if you can audition before buying that's ...
Are there used/mint balanced pre-amp with a few unblanced inputs under $2000??
Parasound P7 only has 1 balanced input, but good phono stage and 7.1 balanced outs.  2 multi-channel inputs and 7 line level + 1 phono.Bryston BP 26C has 2 pairs of balanced inputs, not sure the used cost. Both include remote control.Best,Erik
Start over--HiFi rig ---clean slate
Depends very much on the room, but I would start with about $1,000 of acoustic panels and bass traps from GIK Acoustics, and work my way out from there. :) Speakers, if I had to buy them instead of make them, Monitor Audio, Gryphon and Marten woul...
Ice Amp 125ASX2
@seanheis1 Yes, PC's are notorious for causing ground loop issues, using any metal plugs. For analog outs from a PC the best solution is an isolation transformer from Jensen. Almost all USB DAC's now have galvanic isolation built in, and of course...
Subwoofers.... one 10" or two 8"?
A phone with a calibrated mic does much better than the SPL meters of yore for consumers. The Dayton Audio imm-6 ($24) with something like the Android Audio Tools is really very very good. Doesn't come up to the level of Room EQ Wizard or OmniMic,...
inexpensive USB-SPDIF converter for Windows 10
Unfortunately Windows (all versions) lag behind Linux and OS X in terms of having built in USB 2.0 audio drivers. I've had good luck with Wired4Sound products, but have not tried their USB to SPDIF converter, so not sure about Windows 10 compatibi...
Loudspeakers have we really made that much progress since the 1930s?
Not as many high-end dome or ring tweeters have ferrofluid as they used to plus Air Motion Transformer (AMT, i.e. Heil) and ribbon tweeters have no need. Not including ferrofluid can also lower the resonant frequency of a tweeter, allowing it to b...
Subwoofers.... one 10" or two 8"?
In theory, if  you have the time and space to find the optimum location for the subs, 2 assymetrically placed subs will usually yield a smoother combined response. Having said this, a 10" sub is a lot better than an 8". The surface area a 10" driv...
