focal 1038 be or sonus faber olympica
Both of these speakers are difficult to drive in the mid-bass. Both have a V shaped curve, so ideal if you leave the music in the background on all the time. The SF has a bigger depression around 2k, so probably will appear to image better. I woul...
The effect 60Hz Cycles on 50Hz SACD-PLayers
You might want to investigate if the transformer in your unit can be switced. Many transformers can go from 110 to 220 and back by swapping leads. Only someone who is qualified should attempt this. The tell-tale of this is that the primary coils h...
High Value Desktop Speaker stands?
Thanks, I just ordered the small Isoacoustics Aperta.
High Value Desktop Speaker stands?
I was trying to be a little funny, sorry. :) "Perfect" implies very expensive. While "perfectly good" means it’s fine, and has nothing wrong with it but not necessarily the "best."
Inexpensive speaker cables
Mogami Sound Runner will let the most through. Wireworld will enhance imaging at the cost of a softer top end.
Stereophile & Mytek Brooklyn - Better than it Measures
So it took me a bit to really get used to the FR. It seems to have an accentuated transient edge, and more imaging, but there was definitely some time in my ears adjusting to it. I would say it’s worth trying, but I don’t think the difference betw...
4 ohms , 6 ohms, or 8 ohms???
One other thought. If they are bi-wirable, consider passive bi-amping. Get a solid state amp for the bass section, and keep your tubes up top. Best,Erik
Lexicon MC12 producing static noise only
Lexicon! :)
Conrad Johnson Repair Issues
Hah, Roger makes good speakers, but the Coda electronics, such a world apart from CJ. Not better or worse, but the chocolaty midrange and liquid treble of the CJ’s are nothing like the mid/treble of the Coda gear I’ve heard. I actually don’t have ...
What are you using for ripping CDs? What media player do you use?
I hate most music software. I hate MediaMonkey much less than most. I'm having some weird wireless network issues, so I rip on MM, copy to USB drive and walk it over to my Linux PC which is running Logitech Media Server and Squeezelite. That hooks...
EQ with JRiver/Pure Music vs Aurender/Dedicated servers
Also, I went with a home built Linux server ($650) for a 2TB server to feed my DAC. I have iPhone and Android apps available as well. :) More info here:http://inatinear.blogspot.com/2016/08/ubuntu-mytek-brooklyn-dsd-setup-guide.htmlCheaper, and mo...
EQ with JRiver/Pure Music vs Aurender/Dedicated servers
Yeah, that EQ myth is bunk. The same people who say never use an EQ spend weeks changing cables when a little treble boost or cut would work as well. The miniDSP line has a nanoDigi which is a purely digital EQ. You put it right before your DAC an...
Is my amp the problem?
Based on that, I'd say your biggest problem is lack of measurements. Don't change any hardware. Get Room EQ Wizard and a Dayton imm6 microphone ($25, calibrated) first.
Is my amp the problem?
Aux,Um, no.  I meant, the miniDSP can be miscalibrated for the speaker. They sound good enough. What you need are measurements. Erik
Thiel 3.5 equalizer advice
You can always get something like DiracLive or miniDSP and configure your own. If they can be bi-amped, you can relegate the EQ to the bass amp. Best,Erik
