What is $5,000 worth today, and is it better than 1,600 in the 80's?
Based on how much we have deviated from discussion of audio, I must conclude that I am correct in all of the points below:Class D is the only high end audio amplifier topology left. Power cables don't matterSpeaker driver counts should be a prime ...
What is $5,000 worth today, and is it better than 1,600 in the 80's?
I didn't mean to suggest a budget, but sure! I meant like, say you buy a $5k pair of speakers today, but trying to build a whole system in that budget is not a bad idea either. Does anyone thing we are buying gear that is equal to, or better than ...
Amp tripping circuit breaker.
The AFCI part can trip based on modest ground currents. It is cheap and easy to replace, and worth trying. If it still happens, I suspect you have a ground loop you are not aware of, which will trip an AFCI breaker. Best,Erik
CD sound quality: original pressings vs regular remaster vs MFSL, etc
Players over the last 10 years are SOOO much better sounding than they were for a very long time. In particular, redbook playback is much better. MFSL - Really variable. Have a really bad Pink Floyed DSotM. You are better off with older releases.
Passive Pre-Amp into Integrated Amp to Prevent Clipping?
2V is exactly the standard for DAC's into RCA's. No modern receiver will have a problem with that.
What's more important in a difficult room, room correction or higher, clean, power?
1 - Room treatment2 - EQIn that order.
Should I sell my accuphase for this schiit
Schiit is inexpensive. Buy it, try it.  Keep the better sounding pair.
Banana Plugs too narrow
Did you get Furutechs?  That happened to me.Switch to WBTs.
Go Active Crossover or Upgrade existing XOs?
I agree with @erik_squires that active crossover design isn't that intuitive but it really isn't much more difficult than passive And passive crossovers are difficult to do right!  :D That was kind of my point.
Considering the option of "DSP speakers"
I like the hybrid approach a great deal.  While Vandersteen doesn't use DSP, the built in sub with EQ works really really well. Another approach that works very well is the digital-only DSP. miniDSP has them also.  Lets you use any DAC as your sou...
Go Active Crossover or Upgrade existing XOs?
Here's a link to my post on how much goes into a crossover :https://forum.audiogon.com/discussions/everything-a-crossover-has-to-do?highlight=everything%2Bcross...
Go Active Crossover or Upgrade existing XOs?
The issue with active crossovers is that they are not simple. You have to do everything the passive crossover does. DSP is pretty much the only way to go IMHO when going active, but how much are you willing to measure, tweak and adjust? Upgrading ...
Why no “Break in” period?
Oh, one thing I should add, because it's late Sunday and the trolling has been mediocre all week:I've never heard cables "break in." When I hear differences they pretty much have to do with the cable, not with how long they were in the system or h...
Preamp with external processor loop
Tape loop lets you set whatever you want as input, then there's a separate "Tape in/Tape out" switch. Tape out is normal, Tape in lets you hear what the processor is doing.
Question on phono input noise levels
Noise is proportional to gain.  That is, the more a signal has to be amplified, the more noise you are going to get as a result. Of all the audio signals a preamp receives, the input from a moving needle is the smallest, so this effect is typical.
