Thoughts on Tube vs SS amplification for Sony SS AR1s
Luxman SS is also a very good candidate. Certainly I think more reasonably priced in the US.
It appears I am in need of an EQ
Um, do you need bass or do you need room treatment? Good room treatment will make the bass tighter and fuller, especially if yo are starting from zero. This may be all you need, and your best option. If you can, measuring your room and adjusting a...
Speakers that sound great in terrible rooms
Bass boom is separate issue. I don't know what speaker designs can mitigate that, if any. I use large corner traps to address bass reverb time. The best sound in a hotel room, by far, was the top end Vandersteens with built in bass EQ.
Tone controls -- assuming you're ok with them, when would you try them?
"Sound problems can *always* be fixed without tone controls" There’s more to life than serving your stereo. Not everyone can afford a dedicated listening room, or different speakers for different uses. Also, how, exactly, do you fix issues of the...
Thoughts on Tube vs SS amplification for Sony SS AR1s
The biggest issue, that I can see, is the dip in impedance between 100 Hz and about 700 Hz. https://www.stereophile.com/content/sony-ss-ar1-loudspeaker-measurementsWhat I have found is that even with modest SS amps, this causes a noticeable depres...

I think this thread was not clear.  What I meant was, what are your speakers for difficult rooms?
Can wall sockets abroad have voltage that speakers can't handle?
The voltage a speaker receives is up to the amp, not the wall socket. Speakers in the US are the same as in Europe.
Tone controls -- assuming you're ok with them, when would you try them?
I find the anti-tone control fanatics to be the modern day equivalent of corset wearers.  Rigid adherence to an aesthetic without much practical benefit.
Subwoofers driving me nuts
Placement + Bass traps. I recommend the Soffit Traps from GIK acoustics.
Has anyone else auditioned something that really was terrible?
I’ve heard a lot of things in my years, but truly awful....So, please keep in mind my experience with McIntosh is very limited, and they do like meters, but one of the worst high end systems I ever heard was in the late 90’s. A triangle speaker pa...

Hey @d2girls weren't you about to buy an Accuphase??
Tone controls -- assuming you're ok with them, when would you try them?
Another way to think of this is like this:"I don't always drink beer, but when I do..." Meaning, it's' good to set up your system so that it's in the middle of the lane for the music you listen to, at the volumes you listen to. If you like rock or...
Looking into speaker upgrade/change?
I haven't heard any but the revels. My advice is consider placement, and size.  I know the Revel's for instance have wide dispersion, they like room to the sides, but will reward you with a stable stereo image almost anywhere in the room.
Tone controls -- assuming you're ok with them, when would you try them?
Well, thanks for quoting me but I want to address a couple of things: a standing debate whether tone controls are worth the (likely) sound degradation This is very equipment specific. My current integrated, a Luxman, has totally transparent tone c...
Line fault at the outlet -- do I need an electrician?
A subpanel is a panel fed from another panel. Like in my old house I had a 200 A main panel, but a sub panel in my workshop. The physical size isn’t the determining factor. What makes a sub panel a subpanel is that there’s another breaker in the h...
