How can a system be judged with highly processed, non acoustic music?
mglikHow can I forget Fazioli? I actually played one at one of the piano stores I used to haunt. (Yeah, is this refrain getting old. I'm a more of a sucker for musical Instrument stores than stereo stores.) I think Maurizio Pollini was playing a F...

@wolf_garcia. Yeah, stereotyping guitar brands with a particular type of sound is ultimately treacherous as hell, but I still can't help but do it. I also gotta say that me and the wife have more than our share of steel string acoustics in the hou...

One of my go-to tests for fidelity is whether I can discern the brand of acoustic guitar(s) being played. Gibsons and Martins sound very different in real life. Other quality brands occupy the middle ground between them.
Who Were Your Mentors
My audiophile dad. He encouraged me to listen to recorded music, something I certainly would've done anyway.  He gave me his old systems. I watched him solder together Heathkit tube mono separates on the kitchen table.  I inherited the Heathkit st...

If you care about how vocals sound, you care about acoustic music.
I agree with Keef
Let the band do whatever they want. I'm not going to wag my finger at them.
The two stages of audiophilia
Test response. Am I connected to this website?
Is The FM tuner obsolete?
As much as I loved and supported KUSC back in the 20th Century (and KFAC 1330 AM when I was a kid), I’m just a sucker when it comes to streaming classical. When Primephonic went south, I seamlessly transferred to Idagio. I’ve said it before, but s...
The two stages of audiophilia
@rvpiano -- Yeah, you've pegged me. I shopped like crazy and spent as much as I could get away with. I listen to the system all the time and enjoy the heck out of it. I'd rather read about all the stuff I should be obsessed with than actually fork...
Singer Songwriters Rarely Mentioned By Audiophiles
@millercarbon -- Thanks for jogging my memories regarding John Stewart. I  received a cassette of "California Bloodlines" in exchange for doing a rate-the-record segment on an American Bandstand episode. Ya' shoulda' seen the yellow bellbottoms I ...
Classical Music for Aficionados
I'm currently being bowled over by an Idagio stream of Mozart's Symphony #40. Played by the Ensemble Rezonanz. Conducted by Riccardo Minasi. Far from polite, it's a compelling, full-on romantic fireball rendition we might have heard in the days of...
Is improvisational jazz to impressionism art as smooth jazz is to realism art?
mijostyn -- Yeah, you're right when it comes to folks being free to sample all of music, but it's something that's actually only become obtainable in the past few years. Let's hear it for Tidal, Qobuz and their associates in crime!
Brooks Berdan says bye bye
I remember Brooks Berdan when he was one more salesperson at GNP in Pasadena. Tons of respect for the now departed Brooks and those who carry on in his name.
If there’s an audiophile exit ramp, this ain’t it…
I've never been beholden or loyal to nostalgia or systems/components in my past. I also trust that my ears are still good enough and that my exposure to live unamplified instruments still happens often enough to keep my ears in reasonably proper t...
Does music give you longevity?
@arcticdeth -- Yeah. No question. Savage music soothes the savage beast.
