Don't get it, why anyone would ask others "what sounds best"?
I get a kick out of posts that demand precise definitive answers to matters that are highly dependent on individual taste. With me, though, I'm fine with everybody just blabbing away. Maybe an opinion will move me one direction or another. Maybe a...
What were the radio stations of your youth that helped you on your music/audio journey?
I haven't heard his voice since I left L.A., but L.A. classical enthusiasts have an absolutely great DJ in KUSC's Jim Svejda (who, it seems, is still broadcasting).  Erudite. Superb taste. Funny...and fun to parody.
How do you listen?
On a related note, I just don’t play my guitar or fiddle as well when the TV is on. Luckily, the piano is in a spot that is far, far away from all media sources.
What song have you played the most?
Yeah -- Cream's recordings of Spoonful really do it for me.  Clapton's solos on the band's two recordings of the tune are a major reason why I took up electric guitar. They still send me to paradise. I went to every record store in L.A. to locate ...
Classical Music for Aficionados
@frogman -- I enjoyed my Nyiregyhazi Lizst LP for a good while but, yeah, he's not exactly for the long haul. As much as I love a bit of self-indulgence, he went a bit over the edge. And am I nuts, or did I actually see him live in L.A.? Maybe at ...
REMINDER: tighten up your loose screws
I have a million different allen hex keys in my garage but none of them seem to fit the woofer bolts on my Nola Boxers. Is Nola trying to tell me something?
Classical Music for Aficionados
Hey, in this semi-modern era it's easy to search down whatever piece of music you're curious about and give it a couple minutes listen. I'm not saying, of course, that it's 100% okay to judge Glass or his generously scaled opera entirely from a br...
Seeing sounds and music.....
I seldom imagine colors when listening. Instead I feel emotions. I feel adrenalin or soporifics...soporifics that can engender either balm or boredom. I fall in love. I shake in hate. I wallow in nostalgia. I re-live the past, whether that past be...
How do you listen?
I admit to sometimes following librettos when I listen to opera or lieder. Liner notes are often enlightening (and, ahem, fun), too. Petting the cat. Reading stereo magazines & high-end mail order catalogues to fuel my profligate tendencies an...
The Good Stuff
@bigtwin -- Hey, I've got that Sinatra box set on French LPs. Gorgeous pressings. Titled "Swinging, Sexy, Sinatra."
How do you listen?
I mostly just sit there and listen. Sometimes I'll get up and dance. Sometimes a good book or magazine. Or fiddling with that damned invention I'm using to write to you Joes right now.
What were the radio stations of your youth that helped you on your music/audio journey?
All in L.A. KFAC 1330 AM Classical. Later they simulcast on FM, but they still sometimes had commercials in between symphony movements.  KFWB AM. "Channel 98" -- Where I'd listen for hours for The Beatles and other British Invasion bands. While wa...
What song have you played the most?
bdp -- I saw Iris Dement in concert at McCabes.
Tube vs solid state (with all apologies)
First off, I gotta say that I follow my father's tradition of being totally manic in maintaining and gently using all mechanical/electronic devices. I'm also sure I've already reported on a tweeter failure with a Celestion SL600. But allow me to r...
The "British Invasion". A question for you old farts out there.
As sns says... Anyway, before the Beatles went on Ed Sullivan, I was strictly a classical guy, with occasional forays into show tunes thanks to the fact my mother and aunt danced and did bit parts in several 1940’s movie musicals. I hated rock-and...
