Classical Music for Aficionados
@schubert -- I'm a La Petite Bande fan, too. I love their recording of the Bach Orchestral Suites on Pro Arte.
Does listening to music increase your IQ?
Does a steady diet of Bach make you smarter? Does a steady diet of hip-hop or Bubblegum (for want of a better term) make you dumber? Yeah, maybe these things could be nominally true. But there does seem to be something about listening to Mozart, B...
Another great gone, this time its Charlie Watts
I used to get heat from my bandmates for appreciating Charlie Watts so much. He just wasn't fast enough! He just wasn't fancy enough! To my ears, though, he was a key component in lending the Stones their singular compelling aura of laid-back menace.
Acoustic treatment for windows and a piano
You guys made me go check out my my piano, a 19th Century Mason-Hamlin upright. Anyway, the strings for the piano’s top eighteen keys are entirely undamped, and could conceivably resonate sympathetically. The strings for those keys, however, are u...
What do "audiophiles" use to judge equipment?
cmariner -- I appreciate your inquiry. The way I now go about reaching purchasing decisions is to find reviews of components that coincide with both my pocketbook and my listening preferences. I get 'em home and plug 'em in. And oh yes, I also mak...
When are people going to wake up and realize listening is a skill?
All I can say is that I currently enjoy the heck out of my musical toys and that I live too far away from any sort of high end music retailer (stereo, musical instruments, etc.) to climb into the car and "drive" myself nuts.
Room vs. Gear vs. time of life, ...and you?
I'm feeling extremely guilty. I'm truly enjoying life. I truly enjoy listening to my stereo and discovering new stuff via streaming. I hope I haven't jinxed anything with this Pollyanna post.
What are your top 5 Billboard top 10 songs of the 1970"s?
What can I say? I always disliked the Eagles. The only tune I ever did like from them was New Kid in Town. I actually bought the 45rpm single. It didn't help that my rock-and-roll buddies loved the Eagles to distraction. One of them even went on t...
The great Don Everly has left us.
Yeah. I love the Everly Brothers. I listened to them on AM radio. I remember watching them on several pop music shows of the Early to Mid 1960's. Like Shindig and Lloyd Thaxton.  I still play my Everly Bros. LP.  Have I got one of their 45's, as w...
What are your top 5 Billboard top 10 songs of the 1970"s?
rwp -- Richard Harris actually enjoyed quite a successful film career. I loved Man in the Wilderness. And, of course, MacArthur Park is in L.A.  I'd take my high school girlfriend there.  The tune "MacArthur Park" made me a confirmed Jimmy Webb fa...
What are your top 5 Billboard top 10 songs of the 1970"s?
@rwp2694 -- Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. The song ain’t perfect. But I forgive the tune’s & Harris’ performance their excesses. I appreciate the recording’s sheer romantic sweep and ardor. And the tune’s B section not only makes for a lovely interl...
What are your top 5 Billboard top 10 songs of the 1970"s?
The 1970's saw me pretty much totally abandon top forty pop music for stuff more off-the-beaten-track. So off the top of my head my alternative top 5 -- Vicious -- Lou ReedWalk on the Wild Side -- Lou ReedI Wanna be Sedated -- RamonesMarquee Moon ...
Why Don't More People Into Music Reproduction At Home Play Around With Musical Instruments
For me, playing music and listening to music are parallel interests. I seldom equate one with the other on a judgmental level. Yeah, when I go to a concert I'm constantly playing the "Is it live or is it Memorex" game.  But when I'm playing, it pu...
Which makes the biggest difference?
Well, yeah, the traditional analog electronic components truly get your system up 'n zooming. But when it comes to collecting and translating those digits into stuff the old school gear can recognize, for me the DAC brings to bear the biggest diff...
CD Quality Versus Streaming Quality
I don't mind a bit of compression if it'll allow me to scale down the volume yet still allow me to get viscerally caught up in the music. Compression makes the musical performance room-friendly. To me, truth of instrumental & vocal timbre and ...
