Who's an artist that you're a fan of but whose name you're not sure how to pronounce?
I love the ways you'd hear "Bowie" pronounced, back in the Seventies. . My girlfriend, who turned me on to the guy, pretentiously pronounced the first syllable in Bowie like the bow of a ship. My buddies who hated him because he dressed as far as ...
How to choose a cartridge?
When my Lyra Delos started to sound a little grotty, I replaced it.with a Hana ML. I used my Denneson Soundtractor alignment tool to mount it. It wasn't very much trouble as the Hana's body is nicely rectangular. I mounted it on my old but still w...
How do you judge audio components and speakers?
@twoleftears  ghdprentice,   My modestly sized Mytek Brooklyn Bridge was packed with components and weighed a veritable ton. It ran hot. It also decided to go completely black & dead a couple weeks after the warranty expired. I replaced th...
Songs that sound like Dylan
stuartk lays the case down for Dylan better than I ever could.
Power Conditioners Lifespan
I can't remember if my PS Audio AC box offered up any AC protection or fidelity trickery, but one day...just out of warranty...it went black and belly up. Tossed it into the trash.
How to keep albums playing at the same volume
I just stagger to the steereo.
What is an audiophile? Are you an audiophile?
As perkri sez. I also have to say that my strange lust for beautiful sound has often driven me to purchase musical instruments that are, ahem, a bit above my station.
Songs that sound like Dylan
@ roxy54 ' I couldn't disagree more. Yeah, Joni Mitchell is a fine lyricist. She is able to express human emotions with clarity and power. But at their best, Dylan's lyrics absolutely ring. They explore both the edges of the universe and the edge...
Songs that sound like Dylan
How about David Bowie doing his "Song for Bob Dylan"? Then again, back in the 1970's me and my band would go into full wheeze when we'd do something like Desolation Row.
16 rpm
My dad actually purchased a couple of 16 records for his turntable, which evidently had the speed. Or did we just hear a couple of 16 rpm records at a hi-fi show? In any case, they sounded rough and lo-fi.
What does a subwoofer solve?
Subwoofers usually have their own amps to drive them, and they are easy to integrate into a system. My Paradigms, at least, have several pots in the back to home in on what you need. Buy something like a stereo test CD and let your ears do the wal...
Led Zeppelin 11
My Side 2 lead-out groove is inscribed SO (or is it 50?) 8256-6. There's no RL anywhere on the vinyl. And to be honest, I can't remember ever buying an audiophile reissue.I truly thought I still had my bought-the-first-day-it-came-out LP.
Led Zeppelin 11
You guys got me to do some random needle drops. My analysis... Often relentlessly multi-miked.. Vocals are by turns excellent or edgy, trebly and a hair distorted. Jimmy's guitar is tone is okay if not world-beating. Drums are punchy, spacious, na...
Led Zeppelin 11
I just checked out my obviously audiophile Led Zep 2 reissue. The only mark I can find on the vinyl is BC...or is it BG1?. My pitiful eyes and my not-quite-medical-grade magnifying devices just aren’t good enough for me to be sure.
Led Zeppelin 11
Not to be too much of a dweeb, but the word is spelled paltry.  And yeah, I continue to be dazed and confused by the prices these frizbees fetch, no matter how many hours it obviously takes to hand-carve them. And don't give me heat for seemingly ...
