First investment into a turntable
Not to rain on your parade, but your old albums are likely chewed up from whatever they were played on in the past and $2-300 does not exactly equate with "beautiful sound" even from an entry level standpoint. Turntables involve a lot of moving pa...
Article about us Audiophiles: 'Audiophilia Forever'
I can't imagine many people taking the time to read through it.  Unless you're familiar with the gear, those names mean absolutely nothing. I'm somewhat surprised the New Yorker would publish it.
If I love Elvin jones I'll love.....?
Elvin was a force unto himself, quite contrary to the modest and humble man he was in life. But you should also listen to Art Blakey, who played with a raw, primal feel as well.  Blakey was incredible.
JBL 4429, deep bass ?
People often use the term "deep bass" when what they really mean is a speaker with a high midbass output. Juke boxes are a good example. Tons of midbass, but no real low bass. But people love jukeboxes. They’d probably be happier with one than the...
What are your thoughts about moving up product line(s) within a Company?
Like everything else, it depends.  When I had my Naim gear, moving up the line in preamps really made a big difference and I know Transparent Cable owners are always saying how much better each upgrade was.  But speakers are different, IMO.  Somet...
Harbeth Question
I think it's the first time I've ever heard someone ask for a speaker to go with their subs rather than the opposite.  Sort of like asking for a car to go with my tires.  That aside, while you certainly don't need the Monitor 40s, you might consid...
Very Sensible Audio Advice
What I like about this guy is that, at least based on what I’ve seen, he doesn’t lock himself into a "religion." It’s almost like totally partisan politics which seems, to my recollection to have begun in the W. era, in which literally everything ...
Very Sensible Audio Advice
I would never have thought he would go for products like Heed and Totem, but he seems to have a good ear for sound.   IMO, his advice is better than a lot of the stuff thrown around here.
Why does all new pop music sound the same?
Actually, I was listening to some Ed Sheeran YouTube videos while I was writing out some checks yesterday (yes, I still write a couple of checks each month to companies that don't let you put it on Amex) and he's not bad at all.  Nice songs, good ...
Why does all new pop music sound the same?
Actually, this thread is interesting from an academic point of view in that, in my original post, I never said or even implied that one form or era of music was better than another.  I merely made the, what I considered to be factual, observation,...
Why does all new pop music sound the same?
@simao - I understand what you’re saying, but, as a musician, I think you would agree that every era of music had what may be called, for lack of a better word, a "zenith". The Baroque had Bach, the Classical had Mozart and Beethoven, the romantic...
How thick should the front baffle of speakers be?
The 3/4" plywood used in the vintage JBLs probably did vibrate, but in a way that was pleasant to the ear.  For me, I am not particularly partial to speakers with heavy cabinets, but that's probably more to do with the overall design than the cabi...
Why does all new pop music sound the same?
@Whart - I think maybe one needs to actually be a musician to realize the contribution the rock musicians of the 60's and 70's, i.e, Page, Hendrix et al, made to the music coming later.  But again, the discussion sort of morphed from a discussion ...
Why does all new pop music sound the same?
Actually, this thread wasn’t meant to be about all modern music, despite its somewhat inaccurate title. It was primarily aimed at the WKTU and equivalent radio stations’ playlists, which consist of exactly none of the artists mention on Kennovac’s...
Harbeth M30.1+Luxman LX-380 & Audio Note AN-E/SPe Oto SE Sig
I think you should listen to the Harbeth SHL5 before making a decision.  For the life of me, I cannot understand why the Monitor 30s are so venerated.  I've owned both and, in my room at least, the SHL5s were fuller, bigger-sounding and generally ...
