Don't waste money on ultrasonic RCMs
This was supposed to be funny.  I forgot - nothing is funny in audio.
Just Got My Oppo 205!
I found that it sounded significantly better after being on for a few hours.  I was hoping to leave it on all the time, but it gets a bit warmer than I am comfortable with for a 24-hr/day thing.  The Oppo PM3 phones sounded very good through the h...
Beware the audio guru
I think this may be relevant to this discussion - When I had my first real opportunity to do a recording as a drummer back in the late 70's, I was shocked to hear a rather large disparity between what I thought I played and what I actually played....
How many of us really suffer from AUDIOPHILIA NERVOSA
As with many things, AN is not an all-or-nothing thing.  There are varying degrees.  Also, suffering from symptoms of AN is not the same as suffering from AN.  A cough is a symptom of pneumonia, but it doesn't mean you have pneumonia because you h...
Can you ever get perfect alignment?
So far we have one "of course we can't" and one "of course you can".  I know we may be able to get a cart perfectly lined up with a gauge, but is the gauge lined up?
Just Got My Oppo 205!
So I've had the Oppo for about 5 weeks and I've really come to like it.  I even got one of the last pairs of the PM3 headphones because I wanted a pair of closed-backs.  I have to say, I really enjoy the simplicity of just plugging a headphone int...
Opinions Please - Which Turntable Rack is Better
I don't think there is any way to predict which shelf will sound better.  When I had my Linn, it sounded best with a glass shelf on the Naim rack, but MUCH better with a Neuance platform on the wall shelf.  My Basis sounds best with a Corian shelf...
Yanni or Laurel?
Mow the lawn?  I thought you said "watch TV".
Happy with digital, but thinking about vinyl--looking for system specific recommendations
I would go with the Music Hall 7.3 recommended above.  It's definitely good enough to let you know if vinyl means anything to you.  I bought a Musical Hall 5.1 back in 2005 when I started my mid-life vinyl journey and I was able to understand what...
If cost was no factor, what system would you build as your main audio system?
I'll tell you one thing - it would be simple, SS and something that could be left on all the time so I could just play music when I felt like without the warm-up rituals and all the other bs we go through sometimes.  Maybe an Accuphase integrated ...
Am i missing something without a power conditioner?
Like others said, you just have to try. I initially started by buying a used Audience AR1p (i think) for a couple of hundred. I plugged it into the wall and plugged my Wiremold power strip into it and I was very pleased with the result. So much so...
Cartridge replacment time
Now that I'm getting older and less inclined to fool with gear, I recommend a cartridge with a relatively large and protruding cantilever so you can get it aligned easier.  These tiny cantilevers tucked in under the body are a PITA.
High End is Dead?
Forget it Schubert.  We live in an age where it is no shame to be stupid.  Jack Nicklaus once said he won because he was too ashamed to lose.  We can't all be him - well, none of us can be him, but you get my point.  I hope.
Stand mount loudspeakers
Why are you limiting yourself to stand mounts?  Many tower speakers take up no more square footage than a monitor on a stand.  Totem Forest for example.  As to "all kinds" of music - most people favor certain kinds of music and so do most speakers...
Vinyl VS Digital
One pitfall of analog is that some people just cannot sit back and listen to it without constantly thinking about cartridge alignment, record cleaning, VTA, VTF and whatever else can be fooled with.  In that case, you're much better off with digit...
