Can someone take a look at my system? Suggestions?
The Altecs are probably the only things you should keep.  Which ones do you have?   Why do you think the Altecs need replacement as opposed to anything else in your system?
Nad M3 non repairable
@uberwaltz - That part about the returns was tongue in cheek.  I once sold my father's destroyed ESL tonearm which I described as "rusty junk" and the buyer told me the base was cracked!  He didn't want his money back though.  But that's why I'm s...
Nad M3 non repairable
Just sell it on Ebay as not working, as-is.  Somebody will buy it.  Then they will tell you they want their money back because it's not working.  I do think an amplifier should last more than 10 years, but you're lucky to get that out of a car and...
Mellow speakers for a digital piano
Or you could just try turning your speakers outward at a 45 degree angle so you don't get the full brunt of the highs.  That would certainly be a cost-effective solution.
Mellow speakers for a digital piano
IMO, you're barking up the wrong tree using stereo speakers to amplify an instrument.  I would buy a pair of Roland keyboard amps.  I've been through this and two small amps gives much more spread and tonal weight than one larger amp.  Much more o...
Quincy Jones Interview
As someone who spent the first half of his life as a professional musician, musicians often have very definite and sometimes limited views on what they like and don't like.  I have friend who is a chef and she feels the same way about restaurants ...
You cable haters please DO this.
I am having some cables made from wires used in the electric chair from Sing Sing.
Black sable tube how good?
I thought they made a big difference in my Pro-ject Tube Box phono preamp.  Definitely worth the money, IMO.  I think they used 12Ax7s or 12AT7s.   No experience with the 6922s.  My CD player uses them and I replaced the stock tubes with some vint...
You cable haters please DO this.
I'm not sure that using the cheapest DVD-player IC and lamp cord is the best comparison.  Maybe try it using relatively inexpensive, but well-made cables like Blue Jeans or Signal Cable or something like that.  You do need a certain minimum of dec...
New Yggdrasil - First (and second) Impressions
Quick turnaround.  Again, you need to go through the process.  Let it burn in for a few days and listen to some music until you get more of a handle on the sonic properties of the upgrade.  And don't approach it as if you MUST reach the conclusion...
Integrateds: Why do they all SUCK?
Not to belabor the preamp point, but many listeners have no idea what upgrading the preamp does for a system. When I was in my Naim phase, I remember thinking I needed a better amplifier, but upgrading to the next level of preamp brought the power...
Integrateds: Why do they all SUCK?
Integrated amps usually lack the sophisticated preamp circuitry  of a good separate preamp.  That makes a huge difference.  A really good preamp brings a world of sonic improvement to a system.  Some high-priced integrateds, like the Viva Solista,...
Anybody watch the Grammys tonight?
Didn't watch it - wouldn't watch it.  I recall Elvis Presley being asked his opinion on the Vietnam war and his answer was, and I paraphrase - "Well, I'm just an entertainer and I have no opinion on that sir".  Something like that.
Wow! Vintage HiFi magazines.
I remember that stuff.  Saw my dad's old Bell reel-to-reel.  But waaaay too many music reviews! No wonder they folded.  Nobody cares about that stuff.  Now it's 150 pages of gear and 8 pages of music.  That's about right for the audience.
Still looking for speakers in the 10-20,000 range
While the general party line is that speakers don't know what kind of music they're playing, there are definitely some speakers that work better or worse with different kinds of music.  If you favor rock music, I would consider used Wilsons, which...
