Am i missing something without a power conditioner?
Like others said, you just have to try. I initially started by buying a used Audience AR1p (i think) for a couple of hundred. I plugged it into the wall and plugged my Wiremold power strip into it and I was very pleased with the result. So much so...
Cartridge replacment time
Now that I'm getting older and less inclined to fool with gear, I recommend a cartridge with a relatively large and protruding cantilever so you can get it aligned easier.  These tiny cantilevers tucked in under the body are a PITA.
High End is Dead?
Forget it Schubert.  We live in an age where it is no shame to be stupid.  Jack Nicklaus once said he won because he was too ashamed to lose.  We can't all be him - well, none of us can be him, but you get my point.  I hope.
Stand mount loudspeakers
Why are you limiting yourself to stand mounts?  Many tower speakers take up no more square footage than a monitor on a stand.  Totem Forest for example.  As to "all kinds" of music - most people favor certain kinds of music and so do most speakers...
Vinyl VS Digital
One pitfall of analog is that some people just cannot sit back and listen to it without constantly thinking about cartridge alignment, record cleaning, VTA, VTF and whatever else can be fooled with.  In that case, you're much better off with digit...
Omega single driver speakers
Not about Omega particularly, but I think single-driver speakers are more about what you don't get.  You don't get amplifier clipping, crossover distortion and time smear and stuff like that.  I think it's something you either appreciate or you do...
Thoughts on the most difficult instruments for speakers to reproduce?
I don't think any one instrument is that difficult compared to complex orchestral pieces.  That's why you will rarely, if ever, hear orchestral music played at shows.   It's always something simple like Bach cello suites, Musica Nuda, some "girl a...
VPI ADS Versus SDS
That is too bad.  I have a Falcon and a Walker and I ended up using the Falcon.
Just Got My Oppo 205!
So - I've had the Oppo for about 10 days and I really haven't done any vigorous burn in on it.  Ran the Purist disc through a few times and let some SACDs play just to break in whatever parts play the SACDs that may be separate from CD.  I have to...
Verities of Time
Ah yes.  Einstein's Theory of Relativity.  Time passes more slowly when you're with your relatives.  Sad but true.
Just Got My Oppo 205!
@ptss - no, I didn't buy the 205 as an audio upgrade.  After my Oppo 981 broke, I was using a $30 DVD player someone gave me and I needed a decent player.  Plus, I wanted very much to play my SACDs and DADs, which I couldn't do on the Acute.  Tell...
Just Got My Oppo 205!
I wouldn't say intimately familiar, but I'm pretty experienced with this stuff.  I know there is a dynamic range compression feature, which I know I turned off.  I really think it needs some break in.  As I said, I just put this up due to the rece...
Tube test numbers - what exactly do they mean
I know there are other tests that can be run and I think they were trying to simplify things for me.  I originally wanted Andy at Vintage Tube Services to test them, but he never got back to me.  I'm not going to take this any further.  The tubes ...
Just Got My Oppo 205!
I absolutely agree with the fact that burn in may well improve things significantly.  Just giving my first impressions.  But I remember my Esoteric X-05 experience.  I kept it 6 months and it never really improved.  So we'll see.  But I think it's...
Totem Speaker Wiring
Just means you should try connecting the speaker wire to  the top 2 terminals OR the bottom 2 terminals OR one top-one bottom terminal to see which yields the best result.  Just don't forget that when single wiring you need to use the jumpers betw...
