McIntosh Tube amps or Solid State?? Advices needed!!
I have tube amps and have spent this year alone $1300 in tubes.Wow!  Well, there are tubes and amps and there are tubes and amps.  High power pentodes don't last very long.  Triodes can last a long time but DHT triodes will degrade over time.  But...
Tube Amps With Good Bass Qualities
Amps don't make good bass.  Speakers create music, including bass response. While it's true that different designs and different tubes will sound different, if you need more bass you need to find a speaker, compatible with your amp, that will deliv...
SME 3009 Series III Haters
The only reason to assume that the III should be used with high compliance cartridges is its very low mass@lewm7  au contraire - compliance matching is dictated by resonance.  Mass is just one factor of a resonance equation.  "Flexi" is another...
Need Integrated Amp with Moving Coil Input
Any SUT you would recommend?dylanfan, at risk of sounding like a cliché there are no bad SUTs.  They all sound good, some more and some less according to your ears.  As long as you match the loading and gain requirements for the specific MC cart...
Need Integrated Amp with Moving Coil Input
Or just use the MM input in your existing amp and add an SUT?  Might save you some money and hassle and will probably sound better too.
SME 3009 Series III Haters
The SME Series III is a very good tonearm IF it's mated to an appropriate (ie. high compliance) cartridge.  Yes, it looks a little funky and those sliding switch adjustments can be problematic if you are rough with it, but it sounds great when set...
Does any one have experience with a high-end amp switch or the Luxman AS-55
The AS-55 and AS-50R can absolutely be used to switch one amp source to up to three sets of speakers or three amp sources a single set of speakers.  Just remember that it's a switch designed for speaker output only.  It's a brilliant design and is...
Does any one have experience with a high-end amp switch or the Luxman AS-55
I have used a Luxman AS-55.  It works great although I prefer the AS-50R remote model for comparing speakers because I don't have to get up off my butt to do an A/B comparison.Audio by Van Alstine also makes a very good comparator.  It's probably ...
Has anyone here restored a Sony TTS 8000 platter or a similar strobed platter
My spidey sense smells a trap but here goes:It's not that I think the TTS8000 is a bad turntable, just that it's not a great turntable IMO and is not worth a lot of time or effort to restore; not from a monetary (resale) perspective anyway and I j...
Speaker wants 100 watt RMS. Is 40 watt tube OK?
No matter what anyone says, 40 watt tube approximates 100 watt SS. The size of the room is the dominant factor in this equation. Is there some law of physics I missed in school?  This may be sorta true in some cases, with some amps but it's far f...
PS Audio Revises Marketing to a Direct Sales Only Model
maybe its time for someone to set up a "demo dealer" someone that is not there to sell to you but to allow you to listen, feel and spend time with an item. maybe the manufacturers can pay them or you pay for the services maybe both. I'd love to ...
Has anyone here restored a Sony TTS 8000 platter or a similar strobed platter
clearly you have not heard one well enough set up as they can beat so many TT's around, vintage or modernSorry, gotta respectfully disagree.  I've restored several (4?) of these over the years and heard others, restored and original.  Just doesn...
Has anyone here restored a Sony TTS 8000 platter or a similar strobed platter
parrotbee, I just never felt that this deck was worth the (any) amount of effort required to get it into operational and salable condition.  YMMV
Has anyone here restored a Sony TTS 8000 platter or a similar strobed platter
Unless the TTS-8000 just needs light cosmetic work it's just not worth the effort of a full restoration.  They were an early effort by Sony to try and capture the low-end of the professional market.  Most were sold to consumers.I have restored 3-4...
Micro Seiki MA-505LS tone arm, anybody familiar?
I did not find the MA-505 (or any dynamically balanced tonearm) to be the best match to the DL-103 cartridge, standard or R version.  I would try the Scheu.
