SDS or phono stage
The Herron phono stage is wonderful. Enjoy your investment.
upgrading the analog setup
Budget?
Need low price cartridge for Scoutmaster
Agree with OC9/II or III.
Charge for TT setup?
Who's the dealer? Gotta know who this guy is.
Which usual suspect TT in $1500 range.
Look at used. A VPI HW-19 IV will run mid-$1K with a decent Jelco-sourced arm.
$5k Upgrade
I'd ask Keith Herron if I could try out as VTPH-2. That would leave plenty left to get a good isolation transformer. Note that all the signal carrying equipment must be on the same single isolation transformer. Keep that in mind as you look becaus...
SDS or phono stage
Herron phono stage plus a variac for the Scoutmaster. The Herron will take care of the cartridge (few , if any, equal or better), the variac will reduce noise from the table. Variac operation is easy. Dial up 120v to get the table running and to b...

The Vibrapod Cones work very well with the points facing up. The addition of Vibrapods below the cones can help, but the results are variable. I use CD "coasters" between the base of the cones (or the Vibrapods) and the surface to provide the abil...
Denon DL-103 "one of the...."
The 103 is a good bang for the buck, but there are better carts for less than $400.
Phono preamp: Sutherland 20/20 or Manley Chinook?
I agree with teeshot. IMO, the Herron VTPH-2 is in a class all by itself at the top of the heap. Getting a demo for your budget amount would be a great score.
Phono preamp: Sutherland 20/20 or Manley Chinook?
Forgot to mention that Keigh Herron will make sure the phono stage is set for the correct voltage.
Phono preamp: Sutherland 20/20 or Manley Chinook?
Contact Keith Herron at herronaudio.com to see if he has any used VTPH-1mc phono stages available. It would be the best bang for the buck you will find.
Phono stage good for classical and jazz?
Re: Herron VTPH-1, That phono stage can handle either MM or MC, but the changes need to be made at the factory. IIRC, the VTPH-1mm is pure tube while the MC version uses quiet FETs to amplify the low level MC signal. Symptoms of a compliance misma...

I'd call Keith Herron at Herron Audio and ask if he has any VTPH-1s still available. Maybe he has a few from trade-ins?
Audio Research PH 7 or PH 6
Is there a reason why the Herron VTPH-2 isn't under consideration?
