Does the VPI Aries1 best the VPI Classic1?
Stringreen - I respectfully disagree. The arm on the Classic should take it beyond the Aries 1, yet the overall quality falls short. Everything else being equal, the edge should go to the Classic if the aluminum platter is a step up. But the Aries...
Wet Cleaning the Stylus
NOOOO!!! Don't lock the arm. Let it run free on the cue. By locking it then cleaning it, you're placing too much pressure / VTF on the suspension and cantilever. It would never see that much pressure during play and could be damaged.
What is the best phono preamp you have heard?
I haven't heard a lot of different phono stages, but IMO, the Herron VTPH-2 seems to be the most uncolored unit. It is also very detailed and has excellent timing / transient coherence. Nice and natural dynamic snap. No stridency. I can find nothi...
Does the VPI Aries1 best the VPI Classic1?
I have an Aries 1 Extended with an original JMW-12 arm. I've heard the Classic and Classic 3. Heard all of them with the same kind of cartridge - AT-OC9/II. IMO, the Aries definitely keeps up with the Classic tables. To my ear, the Aries is more d...
Wet Cleaning the Stylus
Consider what is going on at the stylus and cantilever level. The crud build up is basically just dirt, bits of vinyl (hopefully not much vinyl) and some chemical residue. What is needed to clean it is just some mild detergent solution and a light...
Under $2K table/arm advice
Another vote for a used VPI Classic.
Cartridge recommendation
I agree with the 33PTG. I'm very satisfied with the AT OC-9/II but the 33PTG will provide the next step up in performance. The AT 33EV is good but a little less airy in the highs. These AT moving coil carts match up very well with the Classic 3 arm...
VPI Classic 3 anyone try a Denon 103R
If you're still looking at phono stages, IMO, it's difficult to do better than a Herron VTPH-2. Nothing even close for the money. And the VTPH-2 has more flexibility that an Olympic gymnastic team.
Linn Basik LVX vs. Rega RB 303
For the money, I'd look at a Jelco SA-750E. SA-750D if you don't have the room for the longer "E" version. It's a significant step up from either a RBwhatever of any of the Linn arms.
VPI Classic 3 anyone try a Denon 103R
The Denon 103r is for budget systems. The Classic 3 is not a budget system and deserves a much better cartridge. Even the "budget" AT OC-9/II or /III would be a big step up from the Denon.
SDS or phono stage
The Herron phono stage is wonderful. Enjoy your investment.
upgrading the analog setup
Budget?
Need low price cartridge for Scoutmaster
Agree with OC9/II or III.
Charge for TT setup?
Who's the dealer? Gotta know who this guy is.
Which usual suspect TT in $1500 range.
Look at used. A VPI HW-19 IV will run mid-$1K with a decent Jelco-sourced arm.
