R.I.P. Lou Reed
Lou Reed had that "intangible" quality to his performances that only the best artists have. He ranged from silly to shocking and everything in between, but he always makes me want to hear what words will come out of his mouth.
Tony Bennett
Points all well-made. I also concur with the sincerity bit. Sinatra is darn-near perfect, it's spooky, but Bennett's lyric always cuts through and makes you "feel" what he's singing. He also has crazy breath support that I don't think Sinatra had.
tube amps?
Listening to my (new) all QS system now...sounding oh so sweet.
Krell Cipher Issues?
Time for a Cipher refund.
Your first amp?
NAD 7225PE at 16...didn't want another. I still remember how it smelled, and it rocked my old KLH 24s and then my Fried Q5s...those were the days.
question about wire break in
Lmr,Wire "break-in" is all hogwash, and all the long-winded explanations proffered by some are gobbley gook with zero basis in the principles of electrical engineering. Save your money and your sanity...traditional stranded copper cable of suffici...
Alarm Clock with Audiophile Grade Sound?
I advise against the Tivoli. They look great but sound like s&%t...extremely noisy, trebly, and awful, boosted bass. Really, really bad and way overpriced as well. Purchase at one's own risk.
Marian McPartland
My jazz education was at the hands and through the voice of Marian McPartland. I spent many, many hours listening to her over the years (27 to be exact), often on Saturday night at 8:00 with my ritual Piano Jazz gin and tonic in hand. She was the ...
Unbalanced hearing
Psag,I suggest the Ultracurve. It has a 31-band per channel EQ as well as programmable settings. I think it might suit your needs better than the 1502, though it is a little more expensive.
What mid priced receiver sounds best?
Any NAD except the T-series (junk). My very first system was NAD 7240PE/Paradigm Monitor 5se...GREAT sound.
Lightning
I use an APC, but it will not protect from lightning. Short of extensive grounding in your home's electrical system, nothing will protect from a bad strike. Protection at the breaker box may be worth looking into, however. I used to unplug my APC ...
Unbalanced hearing
Psag,Yes, the Beringer allows independent level and EQ of each channel, and it really does help my situation considerably. I also found that if, for example, you need 3dB of boost for the left ear, you should decrease the right channel by 1.5dB an...
Unbalanced hearing
I have dealt with this since 2003, when I suffered sudden loss in my left ear when someone blew a party kazoo in my ear at point blank range (New Year's Eve). The first thing is to accept that stereo imaging will never be the same as what it was p...
Speakers that do pianos really well
I have owned Frieds, Spendor 2/3Es, and 1/2Es (still own), and they all do piano very, very well, especially the 1/2Es. The key, IMO, is to get a speaker that has superb driver integration, proper weight in the midbass, is not too hot on top, and ...
Brian Wilson/Jeff Beck
Yeah, odd for sure simply because one should not really be opening for the other IMO. Though, many top flight guys like Jeff Beck do profess a love for Wilson's song writing. BTW, if you guys have not seen Jeff Beck's "Live at Ronnie Scott's," it ...
