To most, this is a hobby and change is a must. I'm not really sure how many listen to music and how many listen to equipment.I play around with a lot of stuff but for actual listening I have a set system to do that with.
The sound from the speakers.
You should have a nice, strong center image but the soundstage should also spread across the area where the speakers are located. You should hear sounds from the center point out left and right with instruments hanging in acoustic space. If you hav...
Russian 6H23 Type 2 & Type 3 Tubes
Look up the Upscale Audio site. There is an explanation of the difference listed under these tubes.
Balanced preamp recommendations
I would take a long hard look at the Aesthetix Calypso preamp. People are now discovering how good it really sounds. It has a full compliment of single ended and balanced connections, is dual mono and is truly a balanced design. It converts single...
Best Pre-amp for the McCormack DNA-1 Deluxe
Look at the Audible Illusions M3a preamp.
Audible Illusion Modulus 3A CD connection
The Aux input is a better path. There're a pair of resistors in series with the CD input. You can also try the Tape In. I found it sounded ok. You will only notice the difference if your systems overall resolution is up to snuff.
Ayre V-5x vs. McCormack DNA 225
4yanx, I bet that will be a heck of a combination. Steve's upgrades really sound good in the few upgraded amps I have actually heard. I'll be sending my Ayre in for the "Evolution" upgrade later this year.I use two sources, both SACD and CD, a mod...
Ayre V-5x vs. McCormack DNA 225
Zaikesman, I actually used a pair of .5 Deluxe amps in a bi-wire, biamp configuration with my Vandersteen's. It did make excellent sound. I had a single 125 and 225. I thought both amps sounded somewhat identical except for a touch of roughness in...
Ayre V-5x vs. McCormack DNA 225
Zaikesman, nice honest review. The McCormack amps have always offered a lot for the money. You know, when you deal with competently designed amps, differences are going to be minor anyway. The preamp and source will begin to dictate sound quality ...
Ayre V-5x vs. McCormack DNA 225
Now that we've gone this far into this post, what preamp and sources are you using? Yes, I have put all the amps mentioned head to head in my system in my room with my electronics. I would never comment on a piece unless I had done so and used it ...
Ayre V-5x vs. McCormack DNA 225
4yanx, I didn't say the soundstage was bad in the 225, I simply said the Ayre is better which it is. I also said the 225 was a good amplifier but it is certainly not as liquid as the Ayre nor is its midrange as good. The 225 was given a "B" positi...
Ayre V-5x vs. McCormack DNA 225
I almost forgot, if you go back and read Stereophile's review back in 2000, you will see that the lack of soundstage width and depth was mentioned. It was stated that it remains between the boxes. The Ayre amp goes way beyond the outside of the ca...
Ayre V-5x vs. McCormack DNA 225
This is certainly what makes this hobby so different. Nobody can agree on anything. Sorry, but having owned all of the above mentioned amps and able to compare side by side, I'll stick with my opinions. The Belles 350a controls the woofers of the V...
Ayre V-5x vs. McCormack DNA 225
If you want a slightly forward sounding amp with a lot of drive, the McCormack is it. It is not as refined as the Ayre nor is it as liquid sounding. The Ayre soundstage is also considerably better with more depth and a quieter background. The McCor...
Someone please explain the logic of upgrades
I just remembered, they're are some short pieces of Wonder Wire connecting a few things. Sorry. But what wire would you change it to that would make a difference and stay accurate?
