What's the verdict on the Adcom GFA-5802
Gandme, There are many expensive CD players that output higher than the 2v standard. I have had several. With a slightly higher voltage, the sounds ramps up in volume a touch quicker and gives a little illusion of being more dynamic sometimes in c...
What's the verdict on the Adcom GFA-5802
I think you are perfectly ok with the Adcom preamp upgrade. However, I would find a used McCormack DNA 1 (or Deluxe) to use with it. The 5802, for the short time I owned it some years back, just didn't fair well in the comparison. It's an amp that...
Speaker Wire for a non-anal listener
I'd go with the AQ Type 4 as mentioned several times above. It really isn't bad sounding wire and can be had on the cheap.
Belles 150A Short Review
If you get a chance, listen to the Belles 150a Reference amp. It is not an upgraded 150a but an entirely new amp based on the 350a. Talking about a spetacular amplifier, it takes music to another level.
Slew rate and rise time
Makes sense. I know in the Ayre amp, Hansen does use a lot of handmatched output devices. On the other hand, I don't know how he gets the amps noise floor so low and the "Blackness" between the notes with this particular zero feedback design. I do...
Slew rate and rise time
I personally have read enough to understand Sean's analogy and even though "technically" it needed a "Slight" bit of refinement, I thought it was an excellent post allowing these parameters to be interpreted in an overall scheme. I also enjoyed He...
Slew rate and rise time
Sean, excellent "Article." I'm going to keep it for a reference. I have never seen all of this subject matter put together in an understandable format with the relationships such as this. You have again increased my knowledge of what I hear vs des...
Adcom GFP-750, Rotel RC-1090, Parasound P-3, etc.?
The Adcom is probably one of the most underated preamps around. It is a great unit and a steal at used prices. I keep one around "Just in case!" If it cost about $5000, it would certainly get a lot more respect. Well built to boot.
Vandersteen 3A sig. Placement and Room Sensitive?
My memory was just jogged by a Vandy dealer in NJ as to a possible solution to the bass bump you would get with the speakers so close to the wall.Using the Vandy sub 2Wq crossover box, starting at 20k impedance (the input impedance adjusts the bas...
Vandersteen 3A sig. Placement and Room Sensitive?
They are very sensitive to room placement, especially when it comes to being off the wall. 16" out is really too close. They need about 3-4 feet. When they are that close to the rear wall, imaging suffers and the bass will be bloated and ill-defin...
Vandersteen 2ci and 2ce
Aedv8sc is absolutely correct. The addition of a pair of 2Wq subs with the inserted filters makes a great speaker even better and the subs provide a solid bottom to below 20hz. I use this combination myself currently.
Subwoofer for under $1000-new, used, or DIY
The Vandersteen 2Wq. It is considered one of the best for music and usually sells for around $750 used. It is not a ported design. It's one of the best designed subs out there. It certainly isn't a rumble box, uses a a first order passive crossover...
Advent Speaker Repair?
Advent is long gone. I do not know of any "Official" repair shops but you can do a web search for businesses that offer repairs to the drivers (foam surround, etc.) The foam kits are readily available along with people who will do it for you. Be c...
Advent 201 tapedeck: Is good for a modern setup?
Yea, stay away from dual decks. Most are crap! The Naks probably your best bet.The Sony I refered to was about $1000 new. Pretty decent deck and was more for commercial use.
Vandersteen 2ci and 2ce
Shoe, The 3A Sig uses the tweeter and basically the same midrange out of the Model 5 speaker(not 5A) and the associated crossover. RV said that the drivers in the Model 5 are "Cherry picked" and the others go into the 3A sig.The 2ce Sig uses the s...
