Good/great preamp with ht pass through? Thoughts?
The Aesthetix Calypso has pass throughs that can be assigned to any input. It is also one of the best sounding preamps available.
Should I skip my power conditioner?
Kal, I just pass them along like I get them. I'm not making a profit. You'll have to talk to Jim White or Charles Hansen on the drawbacks and virtues! Both are in total agreemnet not to use anything and plug their equipment straight in the wall. I...
Should I skip my power conditioner?
Some of the manufactures have indicated to me that MOV based power protectors and others limit dynamics in their amps. Wether this is audible, you'll have to decide. Ayre Acoustics specifically says use no power conditioners or other devices. Jim ...
NAD 3140 - I know nothing
The lab input does away with some high and low filters it uses in the normal setting. Lab gives the widest band response.
NAD 3140 - I know nothing
Look for a restored pair of older Large Advents or a pair of Dynaco A-25's. They can be found on E-bay fairly regularly. Good sound on the cheap. Might as well keep it old! Make sure the surrounds on the Advent woofers have been replaced (most hav...
Adcom GFP 750 Pre Amp & Adcom GFA 5802
Nothing wrong with either piece. They are very dependable. I agree totally with Daltonlanny's sonic description. Most of these sonic characteristics can be traced back to the amp. The preamp is a very nice sounding unit in any audiophile sense. I ...
Review: Aesthetix Calypso Line Stage Tube preamp
It had developed a hum in the left channel that wouldn't go away no matter what I tried. I finally sent it back. Aesthetix cured whatever ailed it and it is wisper quiet now. It is by far the quietest it has been. No hum and the slightest of sligh...
NAD 3140 - I know nothing
I agree with Veroman, there's nothing wrong with NAD CD players and they will, IMO, deliver better CD sound than the DVD players everyone likes to tout(even the expensive ones sound poor to me.)NAD had some problems with the 502 and 512 series. Th...
NAD 3140 - I know nothing
This was a 40w / ch unit but it had about 3-5db of headroom making it sound more powerful than it really was. I also think it (if memory serves) was a dual mono with separate power transformers for the output stages and a preamp transformer. Well ...
Review: Aesthetix Calypso Line Stage Tube preamp
Nathanu, I just received my Calypso back from Jim White and it is the quietest it has been. All you hear is a very faint tube rush if you place your ear close to the speakers. It is about as quiet now as I have heard from any tubed linestage. The o...
Has anyone used the aesthetix calypso preamp?
Jim White has said that he didn't know where the 50k figure came from but the preamp would easily drive much, much lower impedance than that listed. He siad not to worry with most any impedance.
Dedicated CD Player Recommendation
Might also want to listen to the Ayre CX7e. The "E" players of recent vintage are a marked improvement over the original CX7. It really doesn't sound digital at all.
Upgrade time way past : Amp/Pre or Int for $1000
There are SO MANY good integrated amps on the market and all are sonically very good with a few different flavors.Let me say something about the Creek, it is good sounding but in its standard form, it uses a passive volume control which doesn't ra...
Belles 150A Short Review
Mbolda1, Unfortunately, the Belles lines are not that well distributed and comparisons are probably going to be hard to find (since they are not well reviewed and readily at hand-they tend to be somewhat overlooked which is too bad.) In their pric...
Belles 150A Short Review
I had a pair of JC-1's for a time. I bought them while using the Belles 350a amp. While any gripes about the JC-1's are minor, there was something about them I just couldn't warm up to. I'm kinda at a lost here to describe it. I had several friend...
