Snell Reference A Tower v. Paradigm Studio 100 v2 I second Aram, Bishopwill, and Pbb. My 100.2s have replaced B&W N804s. The Paradigm 100.2s are simply an outstanding speaker in nearly every way. What you are hearing at your friend's house is what you are hearing indeed. I would try them firs...
Quietest amplifier you have ever owned. As a little note to the -120dB posts, it all depends on how it was calculated. Generally this figure is the difference between output and noise floor. However, at what output? And at what heighth of noise floor? Many ambiguous variables involved a...
B&W vs JM Lab I hate to say it, but, the nautilus 800 is definately not a monitor speaker.... I also prefer the JM Labs to B&Ws in all cases. The mini utopias are to die for - simply outstanding. JM Labs however can sound thin with a lean amp so go for one ...
HELP: I need a solid state amp with a tube sound I have determined that the sound I like is the warm mellow slightly dark one very similar to tube sound. The SS amps that fall in this catergory are (WRT family sound): CJ, BAT, Pass, Classe, McIntosh. There are surly more but these are the ones I...
Some questions on break in periods.... Check the archives for at least 10 posts on this. There are a million opinions and "facts" on this and you will never get a straight answer. As an electrical engineer, I don't believe in it save for speakers, and that is based on my research and m...
Which Amp for Magnepan MG 3.6/R? I third McIntosh. I have heard the smaller Magnepans (2.?) with a McIntosh MC202 and it was beautiful. Tireguy's dealer comments are dumb IMO. Any amp has issues with bad speaker impedance curves but there are some darn good engineers that spend t...
Wanted... Advice - Best Speaker for McIntosh Amp I admit that the B&Ws are not my favorites, but they can actually sound good with McIntoshes. Tannoy, Magnepans, and Paradigm Studios really sound excellent with them too.
Mosfets: The way to go for SS amplification? MOSFETs have some very good properties for audio amps. Lateral MOSFETs are more thermally stable than BJTs thanks to their negative thermal coefficient. They are easier to design with too - no beta droop, no secondary breakdown, automatic current ...
Receiver recommendations? I don't care for Onkyo myself but there are some very nice Sony ES receivers that can be had used for a song. Even new, the bottom-of-the-line ES is like $400. Good luck -Arthur
Amplifier Hum Yes, the rectifier problem I alluded to is generally a DC offset voltage that can cause a hum as Darryl found out. You might want to take his advice and see.
Used separates in sub $2k range? I would go with McIntosh MC7100 and C712 (designed together - I have them now), or, the Conrad-Johnson setup mentioned by Sugarbrie. Good luck.
$1,500 to spend on a tubed full function pre Check out the impressive Antique Sound Labs AQ2002DT. Brand new for $1200. May not be a flashy name but the music is there in full glory. Arthur
Opinions on Mcintosh MC-2500 Amp from the 1980s 129 lbs. to be exact. It is a lovely amp. I only heard it once, playing Joseph 33i speakers and it was quite amazing. Very smooth and incredibly powerful. Classic Mc sound which to my ears is one of the best. Arthur
Amplifier Hum For a transformer to hum, the gapping in a standard (i.e. square) transformer is off by some very small amount, whether in the gap itself or in the lamination spacing. When the gapping is off, the transformer suffers from eddy current losses that ...
Review: Levinson No-331 Amplifier Yeah, the XA200 is very expensive, and huge. I auditioned the 334 at length and did not like it as much as the McIntosh 352 in the same exact setup (we just swapped the amps out) of B&W N802s and Proceed CDP. I was surprised because I really w... |
