Your opinions on the Polk R700 speakers

My current speakers are Thiel CS2.4 but finally one of the 8in. woofer gave out.  I am shopping for a new pair of speakers.  I'd rather not spend a lot of money and I am trying to find a pair at affordable price but have relative good review.

The Polk R700 seems to have a lot of good review.  My main concern is the tweeter.  Some reviews said it's a little too bright, but some other reviews said it is about right.

So if you could post what your opinions if you have heard them.

Thanks.

You probably already know this, but Gary Dayton has taken over at Coherent Source Service and offers parts/repairs for Thiel speakers in Lexington, KY.  If you like your 2.4 speakers it could be good option.

I like what I heard when I saw them at a show and the measurements look good. The estimated in-room response makes them seem pretty easy to live with. I feel like adjusting them to play a bit off axis should tame excess treble should you experience any.

I recently purchased a pair of Polk Audio R200 bookshelfs since I get employee pricing from Sound United.  I'm very impressed with them.  I'm using an NAD 7155 receiver to power them and they are quite fun to listen to.  I would imagine that the R700's are voiced the same.  Not going to replace my big system but like I said quite fun to listen to.

The 2.4 was about twice the price of the Polks when new and probably use higher quality components, and you may miss the time/phase coherence of the Thiels as well.  Just some things to consider.

I listened to a pair at home.  The bass was excellent.  The tweeter was not great.  It wasn’t bright to me.  I’d say it was flat and not as good as soft dome tweeters I’ve heard. I didn’t keep them.

Could you elaborate what is it about the tweeter that you did not like?

Thanks.
