@nicks25 - Thanks. That makes sense to me...
@seekerbob Yes, the consensus this thread is very worthwhile. A layer of murk has been removed and my reference is a fine German pressing. Welcome Jim |
Man, I have always felt this was a very fine piano recording, but, this is the first time I have spun this box since getting both the Vandy Treo’s and Belles Aria Sig pre. Just incredible. Has taken a recording as this, already very good, and took it to another level. I feel recording a piano is the hardest instrument to record well, and this a pretty darn good, even better now. |
@seekerbob Re: Crosby If I Could Only Remember My Name 50th. The bonus material on the digital streaming/CD version is also worthwhile. It includes early versions of some of Crosby’s contributions to the Most excellent 1st Crosby Nash album (one of my favorite records). |
@noromance +1 for The Incredible String Band. I have their album “Earthspan”. |
@mammothguy54 Congrats on the quick sale and the success of your new setup. |
@sbank Please tell us about the Prokofiev/ New York Ensemble of the Philharmonic scholarship winners. |
@noromance +1 for The Incredible String Band, I only have them on CD but am always on the lookout for vinyl Daryl Hall “Sacred Songs” RCA 1977 (without John Oates, produced by Robert Fripp who plays guitar and Frippertronics) Takayuki Shiraishi “Missing Link” Studio Mule Japan 2019 Tom Recchion “Proscenium” Elevator Bath 2012 Normal Brain “Lady Maid” Vanity Records Japan 1981 |
James, It's a nice chamber performance, something I hadn't heard any others by Prokofieff. Side 1 is all quintet: clarinet, oboe & strings. Side2 is piano/clarinet(common in Jewish folk music--Klezmer, etc) and violin on track1, followed by a piece for string quartet, woodwinds & french horn. While it's up & down on pace, most of this is minor key, moody stuff; some of it reminds me of the Borodin/ Shostakovich String Quartet LP that gets many raves. Unfortunately, my pressing is a bit noisy and having plenty of quiet passages, I was wishing for a better copy. |
@sbank Thanks. I’ll try to find it. |
@noromance Brian, impressive collection of a very overlooked group. I first learned of the Incredible String Band from an extremely rare interview by the reclusive brothers known as Boards of Canada who are also from Scotland. They mentioned one of their favorite groups are the Incredible String Band. |
All okay @slaw ? |
All this time away from music has me thinking more about digital. I really haven’t kept up with that area all these years. Would like to get recommendations from you guys for streaming in my listening room. I don’t have a line stage. I have on order a DAP = Astell & Kerns a&Norma sr25 mainly for listening to files in my car. I did order Grado g1000e headphones for home. Don’t have a dedicated headphone amp. I have around 200 cds/sacds. Here are some of the products I’ve looked at: Technics s700 cd/sacd player/dac/streamer. Seems like a nice all in one quality solution. Read with great interest about these products, Innuos Zen Holo Spring 3 Denafrips inPontus 2 Cambridge EVO 150 Any suggestions would be appreciated. Please PM me.

Just arrived…. The Fine Arts Quartet & Members of The New York Woodwind Quintet : Schubert - Octet In F Major, Opus 166, For Strings And Winds. Concert-Disc 1961 Thanks @noromance Hang in there Steve! |
It’s very nice B. I don’t/didn’t have a recording of this piece, so nice to have. As with many of these older recordings, your ears have to get comfortable with the recording technique and sound, but that doesn’t take long and you get immersed pretty quickly. Nice performance. The LP looks really clean, but more surface noise than I would have expected, but, pretty nice overall. 👍🏼 |
