@boxer12

Puffball, That must have been a couple of great concerts!!!

Indeed they were Tim.  Both shows were at small venues.  The musicians, including Fripp came and mingled with the audience asking their opinion.  The California Guitar Trio were an offshoot (maybe more like successor since Guitar Craft ended a while ago) who still perform (before COVID) around Southern California.

I don’t believe there was a picture in the CD of how they perform.  They form a horseshoe with Fripp on one end.  Anywhere from 7 to 9 other musicians form the group.  Fripp leads but the others perform their parts without any cues needed.  They all played the same Ovation hollow body acoustic guitar but with steel strings.  That might be evident from the CD.

Guitar Craft was a residential program at Claymont Court in West Virginia that Fripp held for several summers.

One aphorism Fripp used with the group was “If where we are going is how we get there, then we are already where we are going.”

Hey guys, I’m back. Unfortunately had to unexpectedly leave town to care for my mom who wound up in the hospital late last Saturday. But, brought her home yesterday, and came back home today…..so that’s step one. She isn’t getting any younger, but that was a real scare. Glad she is OK, especially at Christmas time, her favorite time of the year.

Got a couple LP’s in the mail while away, so really looking forward to spinning some vinyl this evening.

Hope everyone is well!

Welcome back Brian, was wondering what might have happened.  @bkeske    Holding good thoughts for your Mom.   Glad she’s ok.

Untold Passion

as someone once said “an exercise in self indulgence…”

Thanks guys, really appreciate it. I feel like I’ve been gone for a year. Perhaps one nice thing; having a break like that from my system may allow me to appreciate it even more.

@spiritofradio You get the Voice installed yet? (Have not scrolled back though all the posts yet).

@bkeske no, been out of town mostly and leaving again for a week.  I’m also this week making some other changes/additions to the basement setup (runs off the same vinyl front end) and want to establish a benchmark with my Hana SL before changing it out for The Voice.   Exciting prospects for me all around.

Good idea James. Looking forward to your thoughts when ready to insert it into the system.

@bkeske It’s good to hear you’re both back to your homes, safe and sound. Finding a couple LPs when you get back has to feel good. Cheers to you both.

Thanks Bill. Always nice to see vinyl ‘gifts’ awaiting me at any time 👍🏼

Alright, one of the recent arrivals….Been watching for this for quite a while. Typically only available from European sellers, and shipping made is a bit crazy. Saw someone selling it in the US, and jumped on it. Really clean. Looking forward to this.

Pierre Boulez conducts Ligeti - Chamber Concerto - Ramifications - Aventures - Nouvelles Aventures. Ensemble Intercontemporain. Deutsche Grammophon 1983, German release.

Welcome back Brian and good you got Mom to her home safe ;-)

Bill - Good Robot !

Elf factory of 1 been busy with work and shipping so i have been streaming… The Band 50 th of Cahoots has arrived, so i anticipate spinning that tonight as a nightcap.

I am a Postal Service grade robot stuck in the FedEx fastlane…

Brian,

All the best to you and your mother.

Puffball,

Very cool

Uncle Tupelo / No depression

Nice to see you back, Brian & Mom K.

Ralph Sutton, Ruby Braff – R&R: Quartet (Chaz Jazz 1980)

Thanks guys, good to be back, and great to be spinning vinyl! Or heck, any music 😁

Another new arrival. I have this, but unfortunately the copy I purchased, albeit pristine otherwise, had the original foam sheet that was in the box deteriorate, and some of the particles found their way into the grooves. Try as I might, I just could not get it clean. So, a ‘new’ copy. This looks much better, and hopefully can listen without the unfortunate contamination.

Sir Neville Marriner conducts Bach - The Art of Fugue. The Academy Of St. Martin-in-the-Fields. Philips 2LP box, 1975

Good to hear Mom is doing well :)

Pete Townshend-Empty Glass 1980 Atco

Musically this ranks up there with the best Who records for me, but sq is just not that good on this one.

Sir Adrian Boult conducts string music of Vaughan Williams - Fantasia On A Theme By Thomas Tallis / Concerto Grosso / Partita For Double String Orchestra. The London Philharmonic Orchestra. Angel 1976

Finished up all 3 EPs (4 disks) from The Beta Band - "The Three E.P.'s". Sound quality is excellent. Vinyl and packaging is beautiful, but there are a couple of noisy spots in the vinyl of the second EP. I may try cleaning again to see if it gets better. For me, content of the first EP is better than the next two. The second EP is mostly filler IMHO, with the exception of "She's the One" which is a great song. I'll give it a try again soon to see if my opinion changes.

From earlier.

Gisela May – Brecht + Weill (Eterna 1966)

Various – Lost In The Stars - The Music Of Kurt Weill (A&M 1985)

Laurie Anderson – Home Of The Brave (Warner Bros. 1986)

Replacement mint copy of this very weird album. I bought it when it came out and liked a couple of tracks. I destroyed it a few weeks ago with a heat gun. Great sound on a good rig.

Hey Reubent,

What is your take on the song "Push it out", what are they talking about there?

BTW, I love the Beta Band! +1

Todd Rundgren / Todd

This Mortal Coil – Filigree & Shadow (4AD 1986)

Bought when released. Spent many nights with this on headphones. Still an old favorite.

Cannonball Adderley "Swingin' in Seattle"

Getz Au Go Go

And an Analogue Productions copy of Getz/Gilberto (45 rpm). I just received several AP albums and they all sound great, but this one might be the best - the artists are really "in the room!"

@puffball08  thanks for triggering the Fripp memory.  Saw the League of Crafty Guitarists at the Backstage in Ballard (Seattle) late ‘80’s or early ‘90’s. A very impressive show. Bought a cassette at the venue.  The backstage, now long gone,is also where I caught shows by Bill Frisell, The Ventures and I want to believe I saw Wanda Jackson there as well. Memory impairment was a byproduct of those hazy days.

spinning tonight…

Nilsson / Harry (1969 RCA/ Victor)

Julian Bream / Romantic Guitar (1971 RCA red seal)

thrive

Fleet Foxes / Fleet Foxes (2008 Sub Pop)

I love this album. But this is the rare occasion that I prefer my digital copy. In all fairness, my vinyl has a nasty, persistent “pop” through the majority of what may perhaps be my favorite cut on the album. Though, knowing me, I’m just say’n that cuz I’ve fixated on that. Sounds pretty damn good otherwise.

I find it an immersive album & I’m on the hunt for a cleaner copy.

"Push it out", what are they talking about there?

Funny you should ask. Had never heard it before. But when I was sitting there listening to it I was thinking "I don't even what to know what they're talking about."

After reading the lyrics on-line, still don't want to know...

Schubert, Heifetz, Piatigorsky With Primrose And Guests – Quintette Op. 163

Don't tell my wife....

Fell off the wagon today! Stopped in at Plaid Room Records to sell/trade a few records that had accumulated in the "to sell/to trade" pile. I have a gentlemen's agreement with myself to not return from the record store with more records that I took to the record store. Unfortunately, or fortunately, not sure, Plaid Room had a rich bounty of quality used records at some bargain prices. Ended up trading for store credit and came home with more records than I took.

Also stopped by Spiral Groove Records with a little Fluance PA10 phono pre-amp that I received with the Pioneer PLX1000 TT I recently purchased. They sell some used hardware too and I was hoping they would take it in trade for store credit. They did...

So, now I've got to listen to this bunch of new records, cull any I don't plan to keep and add a few more culls from my overflowing record rack. Then, off to Plaid Room and Spiral Groove again to get rid of the evidence... Must restore order to the (audio room) Universe...

I'll be posting the new (to me) records here over the next few days. Here's my starter from the new pile:

Billy Bragg "Talking With the Taxman About Poetry"

BTW, this album contains one of my top 5 favorite songs EVER - "Levi Stubbs' Tears". This sone alone is worth the asking price of the LP.

Arrived this week,

The War on Drugs "I Don't Live Here Anymore"

Roberta Flack "First Take"

1969/Atlantic/pp

@reubent , @boxer12

I have the first two Beta Band EPs and another lp called "Hot Shots II". Unless this one is the third EP?

Maybe "Push It Out" is one of those songs that speaks to everyone differently?

@slaw

Maybe "Push It Out" is one of those songs that speaks to everyone differently?

Maybe so...

Enjoy the weekend!

Second record from the latest Plaid Room pile...

Daniel Lanois - "Acadie"

Promo copy from WYSO - Yellow Springs, Ohio - Listener Supported Radio. Yellow Springs, location of Antioch College and lifelong home to Dave Chappelle. It's a really cool small town...
