Well guys, I fell onto the new turntable train today, and thought I would post this since so many of you guys are sporting new TTs. My case is a bit different. Wasn't really looking for a TT, especially a DD DJ type table. But one showed up on CL today that I could not pass up. I bought a "used once" Pioneer PLX-1000 w/Ortofon Concorde mkII Mix Cartridge and a Fluance PA-10 phono pre-amp. It's in "used once" condition, essentially new, purchased a couple of months ago for a one evening event. Bought it from a nice young couple about 10 miles from my house. For a few years I've been thinking it would be nice to have a TT in my second system and also have one that was robust, that I could take out of the house to my local listening party. Didn't want anything too expensive. I have also read multiple great reviews of the Pioneer PLX-1000. When this one popped up, with all the accessories, for only $350, I jumped on it. Hopefully I can give it a spin tonight to see how it stacks up against the Pro-Ject Carbon Debut Esprit SB w/Ortofon 2M Blue. Not expecting much with the Concorde MkII Mix cartridge, but who knows? It may surprise me... |
@boxer12-Tim, regarding Golden Palominos, my favorite is “A Dead Horse” mainly because Robert Kidney (15-60-75/The Numbers Band) plays guitar and composed several of the tracks. I believe Robert also composed several tracks on “Blast Of Silence”. Daniel p.s. How did you know about Acid Mothers Temple? |
Puffball, I'll have to get "A Dead Horse". Thanks for answering! In regard to "Acid Mothers Temple"... I really don't know how I happened to stumble upon them. It was years ago though. They may have come up as a recommended band when searching "Bardo Pond" or something. They did put out an album together a few years ago which is pretty good. MV & EE / The Uranian Ray |
@bkeske-Brian, yes, Suma in Painesville. The Hamanns were legends in the Cleveland music scene. So sad when Paul Hamann died in 2017. With his untimely passing, Suma also passed into oblivion. I too have a couple of Human Switchboard 7”s around somewhere. They are bound to turn up in this large scale vinyl restoration project. |
Boxer12, I ask about AMT since they are not well known in the states. They have a small, but devoted following here. They are much better known in Europe where they have toured extensively. I crashed at Kawabata’s house in Nagoya for a few days back in 1996. He did a duet performance with Haco at Tokuzo, a club in Nagoya. I recorded the performance with the intention of releasing it on vinyl. Money was tight, project got shelved. |
@bkeske Brian, I highly recommend that you send the new AQ speaker cables to Audioquest for terminations. They have the proper spade connector for Vanderstein speakers. And for those cables you really should get the 1000 series spades. Also, the method for termination is far beyond a solder joint. They do a process that "co-mingles" the metals of the speaker wire and the termination. Bill Low, owner of Audioquest, told me about this many years ago. You can contact them to inquire on the cost and any other questions about the terminations. Again, highly recommended. Your new speakers deserve it. Love " Forever Changes" reissue, made in Germany. Takes me back to junior high, we listened to this album back then. 10cc "The Original Soundtrack" I saw this album posted here last week. I always wanted it and never did buy it when current. So, I looked on Discogs and found a really good deal ($11) for a M- copy that is a UK pressing. Sounds quite good, and a great album. So good to get ideas from this thread. |
I’m reminded, like a knock in the head with a 2x4, just how good a song writer we have in Aimee Man. Listening through this album again. If you’re interested you can read about it here: https://variety.com/2021/music/news/aimee-mann-album-queens-summer-hotel-girl-interrupted-album-1235... |

The Comets were already terminated for the Vandersteen Treo’s, so no problem there at the speaker side, as they were owned by the previous Treo owner. I was going to buy the 1000’s, but really didn’t want to spend that much if I was going to turn and sell them. I just really wanted to listen to them first, so for $50+/- got the 300’s to check them out. Gotta tell you though, taking off the stock BFA banana’s (which was very easy), there were very similar to the 300 in terms of the cold weld set screws size and setup. The new 500 and 1000’s seem updated and different than the originals I removed, and have much smaller screws as I understand. As I say, my originals look like the new 1000 series from the outside ‘body’ except function more similar to the 300 in the screw connection. I contacted AQ, and they wanted about $250 to terminate them. With a 1000 series cold weld connection? I can do that myself, it’s very easy. Seriously, I didn’t really pay anything for the Comets given what I paid for the Treo’s. So to me, they were essentially free. So yea, unexpectedly, now that I’ve heard them, (which was my goal out of pure curiosity), I will probably keep them. They are really that good. Honestly, I’m quite surprised. I can always get a set of 500 or 1000 spades, but to be honest, I’m not sure it’s necessary right now. |
@mammothguy54, 10cc "The Original Soundtrack" I saw this album posted here last week. I always wanted it and never did buy it when current. So many associations to this band and this record in particular. But I will just say, “I’m not in Love” wow, back in the day did you ever realize how incredible the sonics were? I sure didn’t. I had a suitemate and pal in college used to play this record all the time but I never realized. Incredible really. Great record. 10cc Deceptive Bends OP |
There's a pretty cool story about how 10CC crafted the sound on I'm Not In Love. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I%27m_Not_in_Love?wprov=sfla1 |
Squeezing in one more this evening. Pink Floyd “Dark Side Of The Moon” Harvest US 1973 first pressing I didn’t hold out much hope this disc would be playable. I played it way too many times on a cheap Garrard turntable with an equally cheap cartridge. Much to my amazement, after a thorough cleaning, it’s magic! Analog in all its glory. Only thing I can figure is the old stylus rode high in the groove leaving the bottom intact. My current cartridge and its stylus ride much lower in the groove essentially missing the wear above. |
Thanks Greg. I read the Wikipedia on "I'm Not In Love" and it provided much insight into how they made the recording and created the sound. I especially like how they got the secretary to record, while whispering, "Big boys don't cry". I'll play it again today or tomorrow and listen with even more intent. Thanks again. |
