@spiritofradio Also, you know he wrote his 8th as an 84 year old codger and had a time with putting the orchestra (especially the drum section) through his tricks. I guess some people think his melodies can be too simple. But there is a moment in the 8th when the violins are about as beautiful as I’ve ever heard. Yes indeed. Yea, compared to Beethoven, or Mozart, etc. they may be simple, but still very musical and enjoyable, perhaps because of that. His compositions remind me a lot of the romantic composers. From what I have read, the 8th was extremely well received during it's first performances, to standing ovations. Probably his most popular symphony. As in other genres of music, there is room for a variety of various forms of 'classical'. |
Any of you Lucinda Williams fans can see her upcoming Vols. of Lu's Jukebox at www.lucindawilliams.com |
@slaw The Herron is fantastic. More detail, a quieter background, more holographic. I like that I can have both a MM and MC connected to it and switch from one to the other with the flick of a switch. It's an upgrade from my Manley Chinook and Pass XP-15 and could potentially replace both, although I'm leaning towards keeping the XP-15. There's a good chance that a Herron preamp will be the next addition to my system. |
@slaw You’re going in a similar direction as did I, when tube rolling my EAR 834P @bkeske. I think I’m liking these Brimar NOS. Mudlark is sounding great, perhaps the best it has ever sounded. Not sure why I was ignoring the au7’s, but shouldn’t have been. Oh, and the second MyMat? Wonderful Steve. You're on a much faster pace than I was. Impatient. 😄 No, actually, I’ve become quickly fascinated with tubes. Interesting how you can take a piece of equipment and change it with just a tube selection, but the base piece of equipment is unchanged. I can see why folks, and tinkerers, become smitten with tubes. |
Steppenwolf 'Monster' I have had this for many years, pp Carol King 'Tapestry' Mobile Fidelity reissue. Fantastic! Jeff Beck 'Truth' Originally I believe this was released in 1970. I bought this in 1974 so must be a repress. It never ceases to amaze me how much more depth and holographic the music becomes by around the third album. I have a Manley Chinook Special Edition MkII (Upscale Audio, with Tungsram cryo-treated tubes). Reading above, is the Herron really that much better? Which model is it that you have big_greg? |
Joel, I had a local friend with VPI TNT jr/ET 2/Herron/Marantz amp/Audio Artisrty open baffle speakers...... Oh yeah, Lyra Delos. Listened a LOT. He had his system set up to be bright. We listened to one another’s system at great length. I bought my K&K Audio Trio after this. The only reason the K&K phono stages aren’t in the current discussion is they are no longer made. My Trio listed for $1k less than the Herron and SQ was at least it's equal. |
Tubes, tubes, tubes... I think that tomorrow I should play a couple Tubes albums. Man, they sure were a fun band in concert. I saw them three times in 3 years. I have a tube phono stage (Manley Chinook), a tube line stage preamp (BAT VK-33SE) and a solid state power amp (BAT VK-255SE). I am very close to changing my amp to a tube amp. I'm look at getting the new BAT amp that replaces the VK-76SE. Upscale Audio is allowing me to take home their floor sample of the VK-76SE and if that works well with my speakers then I will place an order for the next generation, new model. I guess that means I will be one of those "you guys & your tubes" LOL... |
Joel........welllllllllllll...... i have a hybrid amp in the reference system, but the Vandersteen M7 Hpa is an odd beast purpose built to drive only two pairs of speakers on the planet....tube front end, SS in a novel quasi cyclotron output stage... the Condo system is a SS preamp w tube power amp... i guess this makes me unformulaic.... but listen you must :-) have fun.... |
