Janelle Monae- The Archandroid. Outward looking and smart enough to not have to rely on usual young adult stuff for subject matter. An incredible voice adaptable to a wide variety of genres. The styles used in this album are all over the place and she sounds wonderful in all of them. My 1st listen through this album although i've heard tracks on KCRW which got me interested in her music. Great recording. I'm just thoroughly impressed.
Foo Fighters- Echoes, Silence, Patience, and Grace- Man this sounds good on vinyl! I ordered all the newly released (remastered perhaps) vinyl. I cant wait to hear it! Great band! I'm especialy excited for The Colour and the Shape.

I'm sitting here in my loft, listening to some prototype speakers that I designed...bookshelfs...but that's not what this post is about.
What started out to be evaluation, has ended with me, with tears in my eyes...as to the beauty of the music I'm hearing...
Clifford Brown...the album is, The Complete Blue Note and Pacific Jazz Recordings.
For those of you who may not be familiar with Clifford Brown...for my taste, he was, no make that, he does embody all that's good about playing the Trumpet.
Beautiful tone, sounds a bit Fluglehornish...(new word)...very deep rich sound...which is, to my way of thinking, pretty much unabashedly emulated by Mr. Chris Botti...same, at least similar tone and phrasing.
The Alto playing on the album, very Cannonball or Charlie Parker like, though not either of them...recording quality remarkable...especially since Clifford, tragically died in 1956...car accident...taking the best, in my opinion stylist on the trumpet, from us forever.
This album is a must for any jazz lover.
People talk about Miles' work on Kinda Blue...for my taste...my taste, mind you...it ain't close. Better stylings....I love it...run, don't walk, to get this album.
You won't be sorry.

Good Listening,
Larry
Dvorak, Sextet in A major, The Auryn Quartet, Christian Altenburger, viola, Patrick Demenga, cello - Tacet L196 (another exceptionally fine new recording and performance by the Auryn Quartet and Tacet)

Trapezoid, Another Country - Flying Fish FF 287
.
Falla "The Three Cornered Hat" Ansermet/L'Orchestre De La Suisse Romande (ORG 102) 45 rpm reissue of the London CS 6224. Sparkling remastering of a tremendous recording, part of the ORG subscription of London Blueback reissues)
I have been fired up all day to go home and play the Royal Scam by Steely Dan. Should things feel more jazzy than rock, I'll probably ease into some Stan Getz after that, if not, maybe some Boz Scaggs.
Its an all Soft Machine night for me tonight. Baby's asleep, so its up to the AKG701's.....
Just gat a nice clean used MFSL copy of Supertramp- Crime of the Century and am just amzed at the bass in this recording. Then I switched to MFSL 45 rpm Patricia Barber-Cafe blue and just thinking why do I ever want to change my system.
Doing a King Crimson marathon tonight.

Court of the Crimson King
Wake of Poseidon
Islands
Lizard
Larks' Tongue in Aspic
Starless and Bible Black
Red
Cheap Trick- Special One
Indeed! A great CT album. Check it out if you have not heard it yet. One of my fav CT LP's!
Jacques Loussier Trio = Satie I've spent too much time not know about this recording; coming at it from the jazz side.
Shostakovich, String Quartet No. 1, Fitzwilliam Qt, L'Oiseau Lyre DSLO 31 (Written in 1938 at the age of 32, this first string quartet demonstrates why Shostakovich is such a master. Just a phenomenal introduction to delights to come in the remaining 14 quartets he was to write over his lifetime.)

Freddie Hubbard, Here to Stay - Blue Note ST-84135 (45rpm Music Matters reissue)

Doc Watson, Doc Watson On Stage - Vanguard VSD 9/10 (incredibly good music making)
.
Returning my recent purchase of the Beach Boys' "SMiLE" on 2LP due to high distortion levels in the pressing (inner bands, side 2 only, but not always the quietest surfaces elsewhere either). Noise and distortion issues aside however, IMO the sound quality and packaging weren't all they were hyped up to be in any event. With its bloated bottom, thin mids, and exagerated highs, to go with a rather flat soundstage, it sounds neither like a good-quality 60's record, nor like a typical 60's Beach Boys pressing (which usually suffered from compromised sound in different ways). And the look and feel of the printed materials are in no way period-accurate, or even noteworthy by current standards. So, rather than trying again, I may just play it safe and go with the CD set instead...
"Magico" - another fine ECM recording; this by Egberto Gismonti, Charlie Haden and Jan Garbarek. The title says it all. Beautiful and melancholy. If you haven't heard it, I hope you will check it out. "Folk Songs" by the same trio is wonderful too.
Schuller "Seven Studies on Themes of Paul Klee" Dorati/Minneapolis SO (Mercury SR90282)

Dvorak "Cello Concerto in B Minor, Opus 104" Starker/Dorati/London SO (Mercury SR90303)

Crosby, Stills & Nash "Crosby, Stills & Nash" (Atlantic SO-8229/Classic Records reissue)

Gregg Allman "Laid Back" (Capricorn CP 0116)
Jeff Beck "Blow by Blow". Original 1975 release. Just installed a "new" Stanton cart with nuded D22E stylus from KAB. Things are sounding crazy good.
This album is on the Vanguard Label #VRS-9078. It sounds
great but I think I'm going to sell it with a few others
that I don't listen to anymore.
Crusaders 1 1970 Chisa records, which in my opinion is one of the groups best soul-jazz dates. Also, Larry Coryell & Eleventh House At Montreux July 1974 Vanguard VSD-79410.

I also found this website Entertainment Destination they have a lot of great vinyl and SACDs import and domestic Jazz, Classical all genres . You should check it out. www.etdestinationstore.com
Prokofiev "Cinderella" w/ Moscow/ Rozhdestvensky on MHS -recorded by Melodiya. Despite those 2 sonic strikes against it, it actually sounds quite good.
Tchaikovsky, Sleeping Beauty Ballet, Dorati/Concertgebouw, Philips 6769 036 - a very fine performance.
Radiohead, OK Computer, 180 gram
Black Keys, thickfreakness
MUSE, Black holes and Revelation
I'm too old to go to the Cochella Music Festivel, but I can still get in the mood while my 22 year old kid is there. Kind of would have liked to see holo-pac though! :)
Anticipation - Lloyd Walker is coming tomorrow to perform an upgrade to my turntable.
I'd be interested to see what the distribution on this thread has been-what records have been on the turntable tonight most frequently. Mostly because if I'm missing something, I'd like to hear it.
