Raytheprinter,
I love "If I had a Rocket Launcher" from that LP! It may not be the most PC in this day and age, but it sounds very good never-the-less.
On the menu tonight:
Rachmaninoff - "Piano Concerto No. 3" Bryon Janis/Antal Dorati/LSO. Mercury Living Presence 180g reissue
Modest Mouse - "The Moon And Antarctica"
Rush,
I don't own a copy of the original Merc pressing, but have heard one in good condition a few times. I will say that the reissue is pretty faithful to the original in sound, maybe a tad brighter, with the double basses sounding a little more recessed. What can I say about Janis' reading of this piece? He is a brilliant performer, and all his emotive playing comes to the fore here. From the trills, to running the keyboard. An excellent outing from what I hope will be many more reissues from the Living Presence series.
Bach - "Concerto For Violin and Oboe" Kapp/Ravina/Roseman Philharmonia Virtuosi of New York

Also 1 CD: Dead Can Dance "Into the Labyrinth"
Stravinsky - "Firebird Complete Ballet" Dorati/LSO (Mercury SR90226/Classic Records 200g reissue)

Stravinsky - "Firebird Complete Ballet" Dorati/LSO (Mercury SR90226 original pressing)

Comparing the original to the Classic Records reissue
Wellll-
The surface of the reissue is quieter, no doubt due in part to the fact that my original is a little beat up. Dynamics and soundstage are still there though. I'd say we have another winner reissue. I'm prejudice though as I love the performance. I feel the Sheffield/Leinsdorf/LA direct-to-disc recording still has the edge with respect to swings in dynamics and impact. But, the Mercury wins hands down for emotion and performance.
Prokofieff - "Lieutenant Kije" Reiner/Chicago (Chesky RC10, the spelling of Prokofiev is Chesky's, not mine)
Bill Evans Trio - "Moonbeams" (Riverside 9428 180g Classic Records reissue)
A couple of CD's as well:

Dead Can Dance - "Toward The Within" (4AD 9 45769-2)
Cantus - "...Against The Dying Of The Light" (Cantus Recordings CTS-1202)
Tonight:
Vivaldi - "Four Seasons" Von Karajan/Berlin (Deutsche Grammophon DG 2530 296)
Bill Evans Trio - "Sunday At The Village Vanguard" (Riverside 9376/Classic Records 180g reissue)
Respighi - "Ancient Airs & Dances" Philharmonica Hungarica/Dorati (Mercury Golden Import SRI 75009)
Nothing for me for a short spell. My TT is at VPI for a full upgrade of plinth, bearing, motor and platter. All Aries Two parts mounted on a dual plinth Scout (aka Scoutmaster)

Taking advantage of the situation, I also ordered a new Dynavector 17D2 MKII cart.
Ken,
Will do. In the mean time, tonight I'm going to hear the Philadephia Orchestra do Carmina Burana & Pictures At An Exhibition with an added bonus of fireworks!
Kehut & Mejames,
Rumor has it that Lloyd Walker is working on a "lower cost" TT. I haven't heard anything about it, but have heard some "buzz" about one being in the works.
Dittos on Doc Watson. I have some old (early 70s) Doc and Merle Watson in my collection. Merle died way too young IMHO...
I'm baaaack!

Thanks to fellow 'GoNer Rushton, we were able to get a temporary fix on my Scoutmaster (Denon cart.) in order to start spinning vinyl again. My retailer is working with me to remedy what turns out to be a new Dynavector 17D delivered with a broken (read missing) stylus. No wonder we couldn't get it to track ;)

Anyway - let's get this thread moving forward again:
Gary Burton/Chick Corea - "Crystal Silence" (ECM 1024 ST)
Bill Evans - "New Jazz Conceptions" (Riverside 12-223)
Steely Dan - "Gaucho" (MCA-6102)
Tonight:
Handel-Harty "Water Music Suite" Dorati/LSO (Mercury SR90158) Wonderful reading by Dorati, excellent recording by Robert Fine and Wilma Cozart.
Beethoven "Sonata in G Major for Piano and Violin" David Abel/Julie Steinberg (Wilson Audiophile W-8315)
Leo Kottke "6 and 12 String Guitar" (Takoma C-1024)
Miles Davis - "Kind of Blue" (Columbia CS8163/Classic Records 45 rpm reissue)
Robm321,
Every time I listen to his recordings, I keep wondering how he gets so much going on with only two hands. Those Takoma recordings are done so well, you can hear fingers on the fretboard, Leo shifting in his chair, just great! And the bonus is like you said: they can be had for 1-3 dollars each.
Bach - "Suites For Unaccompanied Cello Complete" Janos Starker (Mercury SR3-9016) This reissue has got to be one of the finest available. If you don't have it, get it. It is truly remarkable.
I am very pleased with the results I am getting from this temporary Denon cart! it is quite musical. It allows me to hear just how good the new turntable is. After only a few LP's, I can say that it is blacker, quieter and has really dropped the noise floor over the Scout. The music leaps out at you from the silence. It's so quiet that I don't realize how high the gain is as the lead-in grooves are so silent - then, boom... Who would have thought an old medium output DL300 still had so much life left? I shudder to think what a new upper end cartridge is going to do.
Rush,
If you don't my chiming in here, I really enjoy Bob Marley and the Wailers "Rastaman Vibration" (Island PS 8383)
If you like compilation LPs, "Legend: The best of Bob Marley and the Wailers" (Island A1 90169). This one is nice as it contains some of the Wailers' most recognizable songs: "Jamming", Exodus", "Get Up, Stand Up", "No Woman, No Cry", etc.
So far:
Tchaikovsky "Romeo and Juliet Overture and Fantasy" Dorati/LSO (Mercury SR90209)
Bach "Brandenburg Concertos 4,5,6" von Karajan/Berlin Philharmonic (Deutsche Grammophon 2531 333)
Have the day off, everyone is out of the house (even the dogs). So, we have:
Art Pepper "Meets The Rhythm Section" (Contemporary S7532)
Rhythm Devils (Hart/Kreutzmann) "Rhythm Devils Play River Music" (Passport PB 9844)
Emerson, Lake and Palmer "Trilogy" (Atlantic P-10113A)
ELP "Welcome Back My Friends To The Show That Never Ends" (Manticore MC 3-200)
Shostakovich "Symphony No. 12 "1917"" (Melodiya/Angel SR-40128)
Doc Watson "Home Again!" (Vagauard VSD-79239/Cisco reissue)
Don't miss this one folks. Incredible, clean, pure recording.

Mendelssohn "Mendelssohn in Scotland Symphony No. 3, Fingal's Cave" Maag/LSO (Decca SXL 2246/Speaker's Corner 45 rpm reissue)
Another great one. This recording is demonstration quality.
No music tonight, but, we watched a great movie from Canada called "Rare Birds". Filmed on location in Newfoundland about a little restaurant that is failing. Stars William Hurt. Quirky and very good.
Tonight:
Grateful Dead "Live Dead" (Warner Bros. "green lable" R1 74395/180g reissue)
Eva Cassidy - "Songbird" (S&P-501)
Tangerine Dream -"Green Desert" (Relativity 88561-8072)
Today I installed the 1" Cellular shades as called for by Rives Audio http://www.rivesaudio.com They are insulating room darkening shades. So, I played the standard large orchestral warhorses:
Mussorgsky "Pictures At An Exhibition" (RCA LSC-2201/Classic Records reissue)
Stravinsky "Firebird complete ballet" (Mercury SR90226/Classic Records reissue)
Mendelssohn "Symphony No. 3, Fingal's Cave" (Decca SXL 2246/Speaker's Corner 45 rpm reissue
Miles Davis "Kind of Blue" (Columbia CS 8163/Classic Records 45 rpm reissue)

As good as things have been sounding, the window treatments have taken it to a whole new level. All the residual glare from the 6ft and 10 ft windows is gone compliments of the 1" insulated cellular shades.
Some friends over today. The feast:
Crosby, Stills and Nash - CSN "Helplessly Hoping"
Donald Fagan - The Nightfly "Walk Between Raindrops"
Allman brothers Band - Fillmore East "You Don't Love Me"
Louis Armstrong - Satchmo Plays King Oliver "St. James Infirmary"
Eva Cassidy - Songbird "Fields of Gold"
Joni Mitchell - Hejira "Coyote"

Jennifer Warnes "Famous Blue Raincoat" (Cypress/A&M 0100)
Bill Evans Trio "New Jazz Conceptions" (Riverside 12-223) This version of the trio had Teddy Kotick doing the bass duties
Beta testing Paul Frumkin's 2 stage LP cleaning solutions, so I am going through a variety of older LPs, cleaning them and listening
Vivaldi "Four Seasons" von Karajan/Berlin PO (DG 2530 296)
Tangerine Dream "Rubycon" (Virgin International VI 2025)
Art Pepper "Meets the Rhythm Section" (Contemporary S75532)

Tonight,
Beethoven "String Quartet, Op.131" Bernstein/Vienna Philharmonic (DG 2531 077) Surprising recording. Not your basic DG "house sound", but an airy, stirring reading of this melancholy work.
Bill Evans "New Jazz Conceptions" (Riverside RLP-223)
Santana "Caravanserai" (Columbia KC 31610)
Al Stewart "Year Of The Cat" (Janus JXS-7022)
Stiltskin,
Thank you for the recommendation. I have the "Live" Union Station, as well as several Jerry Douglas releases. I have always found the quality of the recordings to be top notch.

I will have to put "So Long, So Wrong" on my shopping list.
