@tgilb , I think I got that one in. |
Reading my emails this morning I saw that Joan Shelley has a new record out - “The Spur”. @slaw , & others may be interested. Not sure how this got in under the radar. VMP has exclusive unnecessarily colored vinyl version for $31. Band Camp has it on black vinyl for $19. |
@bkeske Thanks for the lowdown on the nitty-gritty! I like the way you used loading as an indication of refinement. The less loading you can get away with, the better. |
Reagarding SQ….well, what I consider a ‘Belles’ sound. Very similar to my old 400A, but better at almost everything. The overall sound is what I would call ‘liquid’, and not a hint of anything being etched, grainy, hard, or cold. The gentleman I purchased them from has had almost all David’s Power Module amps, and as opposed to the 150A, 350A, etc. he feels the MB200’s are more tube-like. The others he knew were solid state. I can only take his word for that, but the ‘liquidity’ of the overall presentation is noticeable the first time I heard them. That said, it isn’t ‘mushy’ at all, but rather very refined, somewhat airy but full at the same time, reproduces a very nice big stage, good imaging, detail, much faster than the old 400A, etc. And with 64 amps of peak current they have a lot of grunt, power, and control. When I had the B&K 3030 in, I had to reduce the loading on my Hagerman to 470 ohms, as it bothered me at 1,000 being too etched on the highs, where I had it with the 400. Well, one of the first things I did was set loading back to 1,000 with the MB’s, and all is good again, nice clean smooth crisp highs again (the Soundsmith MIMC likes 800-1,000 IMO). Anyway, initial thoughts. |
Thanks Tim, enjoying them so far. Good to have the old Belles sound signature back in the rig. BTW, you should consider that JGB box set. Very nice, well packaged. As it turns out, it’s 4 1/2 LP with a blank side. Sounds great to me, albeit there are a couple songs I don’t get the mixing, putting Jerry center or even a bit left center, yet his guitar on the right/right center. Odd, as I know how these guys set themselves on stage. But, all in all, a very nice box.

@bkeske Welcome to the monobloc club! Looks good. Care to comment on SQ? |
@bkeske I like big amps and I cannot lie, you audio brothers can't deny! |
Thanks Greg. Yea, I am fascinating by myself thinking I need more than one amp 😁 I was always more an integrated type of guy, maybe a tuner added to it back in the day. Now, I have a separate pre, phono pre, DAC, and of course, two separate amps. lol. No tuner, but I do believe my old one is around here somewhere. |
Awesome Brian! Enjoy them in good health. Steve, glad to have passed along my recommendation on that album. It really is a treat to listen to. John Klemmer - Barefoot Ballet I know, I know..."smooth jazz" Hey, I like the album. And back in the day, you play this with a girl over to the house and it's a guaranteed good night (wink, wink)😁 John Lee Hooker - It Serve You Right To Suffer Analogue Productions 45rpm. Now this is a heck of an album. Just amazing! AP/QRP is fabulous in what they do. Jeff Beck - Truth MoFi Gain 2 Ultra 45rpm. I bought this last year as a limited issue, #2,074/5,000. I think that MoFi did a bit of a smiley face in their mastering of this album. Too bad, because the retrieval of musical information is definitely greater than what I hear on my early period press. And the grade of vinyl is vastly superior. But I think the tonal character on my older album is better. |
