Bill Evans-You Must Believe In Spring 1981 WB

A great record that I have always felt was under appreciated. Lo and behold, it got the repressed by Craft this year. My OG sounds amazing so not likely to toss $40 down for the remaster, but glad it is out there.

@bslon

Hi Brian, do you have others from Merge Records? I got one recently, the surface noise is atrocious. I’m wondering about the quality. Hopefully mine’s an anomaly.

Hey Bill, that one is pretty quiet, but I have another that is a bit noisy. So, perhaps ‘hit and miss’ for them.

Dan, Jim, Thanks

Dan, I wish nothing but the best for you & your family.

Steve, Look forward to hearing about your new phono stage

Thanks @dayglow! I've been camping in a monsoon for the last week. No Tunes other than a little Spotify in the truck.

Mark Eitzel - Hey Mr Ferryman. Merge Records 2017

The Police - Greatest Hits, Abbey Road half-speed mastered 2 LP version. Sounds really nice, maybe just a little on the "hot" side, but very dynamic, quiet vinyl, good instrument separation, and very clean sounding.

Steve, I'll pass on your message to Kat.  I'll see her on Monday when I'm at the store.  I'm picking up a Feickert LPS for my turntable.

Kat is very intelligent, very nice, and also quite good looking.  That's an excellent combination in a person.

@sourpuss123 Ah, what to do with a bone stock bit of historic kit…..

I went down same path w my family heirloom MX-110Z and MC240….

Disuse will lead to failure and so may use as you know. Real Marantz parts are considerably more rare than Mac bits, so finding bits to retain stock could be neigh impossible… so if you do modify w new rca, etc I advise keeping the old parts ! I did ultimately decide to have both of mine modified. The MX went back to Vestal to Audio Classics where retired Mac engineer Richard Modeferi went thru it, including a factory defect. While in the unit he incorporated his “ RIMO “ filter circuit in the tuner.

the 240 went on a similar path w a master Mac tech keeping it stock but fixing a few caps and importantly worn out input RCA, pots. I fell in with a Jim Mchane mac modification dude Mike Samra of Saginaw and he went thru the amp extensively w Russian PIO, Shuko, etc…. It is a fantastic sounding amp now….. The RM-9 slightly more accurate but the 240 is closer to my heart. i remember the day it came in the door in 1965 :-)

I think Mike or Mcshane would be good people to consult with in addition to Kevin.

Best to you on your journey

Thanks for your reply Jim. I’ve owned them for two years. Finally set them up.

Steve thanks for the concern. i have been busy with other things…you know ..life stuff…that pull away from music….and that will continue somewhat thru Summer…as I head North for my season of fishing…. I will check in as I’ve a hot date with my reference music system :-)

Glad to hear you are enjoying the Quicksilvers, very musical gear, well engineered, superb value IMO..

Currently finding my Southerland Timeline my favorite all-round weight for SQ tonight.

Favoring upper midrange prescence..

Hopefully will try and get my new to me phono stage, engaged tomorrow.

No doubt my Ushers love the Quicksilvers.

I mean I've been comparing my record weights with very descernable results.

@sourpuss123 I realize everyone’s setup is unique and different, but I’ll mention that I’ve gone on the Funk’n’Groovin (Telefunken), Mullard, RCA “black plate” and so on 12AX7 adventure.  What I found that outdid the others far and away is the Brimar “box plate” with double mica support CV4035 from the late 60s/early 70s.  Made in England for the British Military and readily available for a fraction ($70 not long ago) of the aforementioned manufacturers.  Very open and spacious soundstage.  Works great for classical, jazz, rock, noise, you name it.

Enjoy, daniel

Hey Joel,

I got a crush on Kat. Watching her set up those turntables........

Dean Wareham "I Have Nothing to Say to the Mayor of LA"

2020/Double Feature

@mammothguy54 thanks! I bought some Mullard 12ax7’s on his recommendation and put the Telefunken’s in my guitar rigs (just kidding, they are in storage). I’ll give him a call on Monday. It’ll probably cost me some interconnects as I’ve been wanting to ask him about that as well.

carry on

Finishing up with my thoughts on on "Groovin’"....

Side, four. The bass that I wished for previously, is now present. It makes for a more complete listening experience. Throughout this entire lp, I never turned the volume over 12:00, which is high these days But not out of line for a MFSL lp.

Side 4 is the superior sounding side. Next time I’ll do a deep steam before listening It’s a keeper.

I need to say that for a $60 lp, there should not be any quality issue at all!!!

@slaw Hi Steve, no I have not heard Dean’s latest solo work.  Maybe I’ll look for it next Saturday when I wander out for RSD second drop (18 June).

@sourpuss123

May I suggest that you contact Kevin Deal at Upscale Audio.  He is not only a wealth of knowledge on what you are seeking for a good opinion, but I believe that he also has a Model 7.  He will give you the best advice on what action to take (or not to take) in order to maintain the best value of the unit and not depreciate its place in this world.

Best of luck to you.

I brought my copy of Groovin' to Jim's house (Tomic) yesterday.  It sounded much better yesterday than it did on my rig last week.  I will clean it again in my Degritter tomorrow, this time on the full "Heavy" clean cycle and listen to it again.  I think maybe a more moderate volume level may be a better way to listen to it.  I don't believe it ever was a reference recording quality, so the remaster/reissue can only make the best of what the original tape has to offer.  The music is fabulous and brings back a lot of good memories.  I would prefer to keep it.

I'll check out the YouTube review, as suggested.
