What tube amp are you using with Von Schweikert VR series speakers

I have a pair of Von Schweikert VR4 jr speakers. I am trying to figure out what tube amp to buy to mate with them. I have tried the Rogue and think it lacks tube characteristics. I asked Damon but never heard a reply back with any suggestions. I would imagine if the amp worked well for a VR4 or 5 it would also be a good mate with the jr's.

thanks

I will look into these suggestions. Agree with the Rogue drive. I also agree no lushness.

Ive owned the vr-4's with a Number of tubed amps, Rogue has the drive do do the lowend justice, The rogues on the other had do Not have the mid range lushness.

A set of Golden Dragon kt88's Might just do it.

Another nice that grabbed the vr-4 by the balls was VTL Deluxe 300's.

Worst sounding amps Krell Mda300 mono blocks,

Conrad Johnson CAV 45 or CAV 45 S2. Ive owned both with VS and they are very close. The S2 is better but the original is very nice just like the S2. 45 watts vs 60 watts. I also ran a McCormack with vr4’s long ago also sounded really good.

You can pick up an original for $1300 to $1500 and the S2 for $2500 to $3000 used they retail for $5500 now.

The El 34’s with the VS works very well I preferred it more than KT88 amp’s in my system.

I own a pair of VR4jr for 13 years. They seems to run best for me biamped with the bass units driven by solid state and the top unit with a separate amp. Are you using the factory jumpers between the top and bottom units?  The biggest sound improvement for me was to avoid the jumper.

They may be out of your budget, even used, but I think you owe it to yourself to hear these speakers with OTL tube amps. The Atma-sphere M-60 might do the job. (or at least the MA-1). I find that OTL has a clarity, timbre, immediacy etc that overrides other considerations - to my ear (triode might be even better, but that wont work with your speakers). Whatever you do, get a deal where you can try the amp in your room and with your speakers before final decision.

I bi-amped my VR4 genIIIs using a TAD 60 on the top, B&K M200’s on the bass. This sounded quite nice. I ran the TAD in triode mode (30watts). Running the TAD full range left me with some flabby bass evening ultralinear mode (50 watts).

My budget would be 1500 to 3000 used. 60 wpc seems to drive my speakers nicely.

I had VR4 Silvers many years ago. They sounded great with 100 tube watts. I was using an original Music Reference RM9. I would speculate that the Jr. is an easier load still, bit not sure about that.

A Prima Luna with EL-34s is pretty good. If that doesn't do it for you, it might be time to look at different loudspeakers.

Rogue amps do not sound that tubey , found that out with a Cronus Magnum.  I had a pair of VS VR33 speakers and was driving them with a 150wpc SS amp.   Didn’t like the speakers and sold them pretty quickly.  There are a lot of tube integrateds out there, perhaps a Line Magnetic or one of the better Chinese Integrateds?  Good luck
