You obviously have never heard a good tube set-up if you think tube sound is dull and overly warm. Yes, the vocals are upfront and bass is on the heavy side on that CD but overall it sounds quite natural actually. You like the Tizzy sound huh?

Actually, I am not sure I will call the Norah Jones CD or Vinyl (Feels like home and the previous one) quite natural but I think they are very challanging to systems. The sound balance tests the systems at 'seams' at realistic volume level. I think Norah Jones has system punishing vocal range. Bad system balance and it will show up. |
I agree with Rotarius - these recordings are mostly free of the over-compressed, supercharged high end normally found on "pop" CDs. personally, I find these CDs (haven't heard the vinyl, as I understand they used the digital master to make the LP ?!) very listeneable and non-fatiguing; although not reference quality, they really do sound quite good. On my system. Which is a mix of tubes (Audible Illusions M3A) and solid state (Nuforce Reference 9s). |
I find the sacd of this album to be wonderful. Not vinyl, but very close in my rig. I have to agree with Rotarius. I'm using SET. Quintessential tubes!! |
No, Rotarius. I don't like the TIZZY sounds.I do not knock tube sounds either. As a matter of fact, I am trying to sell one of my 400Xi to get the tube-intergrated. Again, there is no battle between tubes vs SS here. My apology to all tuby heads. Just a fact that, as much as I love NJ first CD, her second CD sounds darn-good in my car stereo ( little on the bright side)but the second " Feel like home" sounds overly open and too much bass in my home set-up system. However the " comes away with me" sounds wonderful at home or on the roads. I read some where in this web, the 400XI is ruthless to its source. Maybe, that is the case here.Happy listenning. |
heres a shocker...most pop, jazz, and rock recording aren't trying to sound accurate. the goal of most producers and engineers is to capture the 'feel' of the material....can anyone deny the power of THE ROLLING STONES-ENGLANDS NEWEST HITMAKERS, or literally tens of thousands of other recordings because they don't meet some kind of balanced sonic criteria. If a recordings 'sound' is more important then its 'mood' or 'feel', we've really taken the fun out of popular music. Miss Jones CD wasn't made to be a reference disc. it was made to capture her personality by one of the world's greatest producers(god rest his soul). |

Well, I am glad you did not intend to knock tubes. I don't think it's the recording, there isn't much use of cymbals and such to produce the usual top end sparkle. So which tube integrated are you considering? |
I have the recording, "Feels like home" sounds a little better than "come sail away". Both are good recordings that only fall down in the area of drum reproduction when compared to other very well recorded drums...ie, pat Barber (All)...Willie Nelson "Teatro" and others that get it right.
If by "fatigue feeling" you mean makes you want to take a nap...I can understand that, her music is pretty laid back.

Warrenh, this thread is about "Feels Like Home". It has not been released as an SACD, only her first was (and supposedly mixed from a 16/44 source, etc). Anyway, I like the warmth of the newest release, but then my system tends slightly toward the cooler side. |
Rotarius, you are pretty sharp. (1)Yes, I do not like the " vocal too up front" and heavy bass. Just my own preference. The "Love scenes" by DK is my personal reference CD for testing different gears for vocal. (2)Don't know yet. Tried Rogue ( magnum series/mono blks) but they don't sound like tubes. Tried some CJ back in the 80s with 250w CJ SS and their line stage tubes and such a coloration added to my SL3 ML.So far, very sacry experience to return opened gears, paid 15 or more restocking fees and still made the Audio salon unhappy. |
Interesting comments.I find both Norah Jones CDs sound a bit dull and hazy-sort of like a classic NAD amplifier.Not unpleasant but a bit contrived.

Good question. It is well recorded (maybe not mastered to everyone's liking but recorded well, it seems) and would make a superb SACD, plus her first came out within months of its' redbook release. Dunno....Blue Note has dropped the ball on many hirez releases. I've spoken with them many times about the great Cassandra Wilson and her Miles Davis tribute "Travelling Miles". I pointed out to them that the DVD-A release (DTS/EMI/Blue Note release on DVD-Audio) has the right front and rear channels swapped on the DVD-Audio layer. I now have four (4) frickin copies that they've sent me, each one they've said was corrected. Each one was the same incorrect mix as the orginal. They've even given me two addtl DTS catalog picks for my inconvenience, but still no corrected copy. BTW, the DTS layer is correct; always has been. |
Andrew, I've had similar problems with the Norah Jones cds on my audio system. On my HT, the early DVD from New Orleans concert seems to have pathological bass; either that or my system does not deal with it well.

Art, interesting enough, I dropped the " Feels like home" into my son Onkyo receiver with his Yamaha speakers, the CD sounds just fine. I enjoy NJ cds and just wish the " Feels at home" cd was little brighter or less dark as it was recoreded. |
