What's your profession? Age?

Just thought after the "how much is your system worth" post that it would be nice to see what all these people do to get $80K systems, and perhaps how long it takes. I'm a 29-year old economist for the gov., just completeed my Ph.D. last month, and my system is at about $10K. Just a pup hoping to keep upgrading...

Cool, thanks for the insight, esp. since you're just a little while 'down-river' from me!
CPA - 28 years old. I have spent about $13k but some of the money was wasted by purchasing new mid-fi equipment at audio dealers instead of better used equipment through audiogon.
Quad Cities, Moline and Rock Island in Illinois and Bettendorf and Davenport in Iowa. It's really the QUINT Cities, because East Moline (on the Illinois side) should be counted. In fact, some of the locals would probably say that East Moline is the 4th city instead of Bettendorf. People rarely refer to it as the "Quint Cities", but that's closer to being correct. There are also several smaller towns which are very close, on both sides of the Mississippi River, which are generally considered to be a part of the "Quad City Area". For whatever reason, the moniker of "Quad Cities" has stuck over the years.
Mdhoover- Where are you a pathologist? I'm a radiologist in Minneapolis, MN (US)
Software quality assurance. HT/2CH system would retail for about 9k, but I've put it together for about 5K on A'gon. Just finished a purchase this weekend, in fact! =)
Im 26 regional manager for a bank. Married with 2 kids 3years and 1 year. Ive got about 25k in my system. I will eventually add a good projector which should shoot me up another 5-10k. But anything could change now that my wife is liking coming down and watching movies.
ERP Consultant, 33, $3.5K. Started on this hobby 5 months back. Had another system in another country :-)
My profession is software engineering. I'm currently employed as a system architect at a large financial company on the US East Coast. That's a euphemism for saying, they won't let me code anymore, so now I draw lots of diagrams with lines and boxes. But seriously... Oh yeah. My age? 22... in hex:) System wise I am at about $35k and counting - gulp!
Hello I'm Customer Support Engineer, 42. and my latest home theater system is about 50K, I sold all of my two channel system, Jeff Rowland/ EAD etc.. and my old home theater system and consentrated only in one system.

I don't have to much time to listen to music this days with
a family and work, but the home theater allways get used.

Esoteric DV 50S/ Anthem D1/ Anthem P5/ Aerial Acoustics/ Audioquest, custom powercord co./ BPT,Exactpower/ JVC DILA 61" custom audio/video rack.
45 and I'm in Operations for a 3PL focused on wireless devices and electronics. System is more than I like to think about but it is an amazing hobyy when it's all working together right.
44 - Own a small C-store & Deli - presently looking to sell the business and get into something else. Not sure what - but something else. I've been self-employed most of my life - I think I'd like to work for someone else for a change - hmm, ...sounds a bit like burn-out, I think..?

My system is still evolving - though I doubt I'll ever change my Pipedreams... As for HT - we're building a new house now and I'm hoping to build a new HT system when we finish the house. My HT system is B&O system which isn't too bad but I have a serious hankering for serious realistic HT system... I've never really had the opportunity to listen to other HT systems than my own... I've always listened to music. I bought my first stereo when I was 8 years old. Then when I was about 16 or 17 I bought a B&O. I still have my original B&O (Bang & Olufsen) system I bought in 1976...

My father used to record muisc from the radio. I remember when brought home his "elite" Warfdale speakers with the purple-dome tweeters - that we (the kids) dared NOT to TOUCH! He had a Scott reciever and Roberts reel to reel... man, that was back in 1966-68? wow.. long time ago..

Dat be me...

I own a construction company. I really started in Hi-Fi when I was young but got out of it through my 40s now that I am back into it is has taken me about two years to find the componets I really like and build my current system. I am now 55 and my system is about 50 grand or so...give or take...
System is getting along in years now: speakers, amp, and
preamp are about 10 years old.
Great post. I am a 23 year old graduate student in Opera Performance at the University of Texas. Going to complete my degree this coming May. My system, if purchased all new, would run in the 15k area....However, thanks to the gon I have kept my costs "reasonable"!
Superfund, how does a 24 year old have a 13K system? I am glad another chemist is on board here but you are a lucky man or have a rich father. Best of luck my friend.
im 50 and own a dog grooming shop. ive only been into this hobby for a few yrs. my system is around 8k.

I'm 38 and I'm a registered medical radiation technologist specializing in CAT SCAN. I've just added a few new pieces and awaiting delivery. I have a modest system retails for 10k.

Cheers
Well, then I am the odd one out here. Then again, I do work in the fields of Quantum Mechanics and Quantum Information ;-)
More likely: wired correctly for science and wrongly for high-end audiophile pseudo-science and BS. :-)
31 and wow, I am only the third physicist in this thread. Well, now its four if I add my wife as well. But then there are no other physicist audiophiles out there that I know of. Maybe something in the brain that is wired correctly for science and wrongly for enjoying music...
I am a bartender! "What would you like to drink tonite?" I can talk and educate people about audio and meet women. Its a great job, plus I can go surfing everyday.
Automotive Body Designer, I'm 47... and I still have more tied up in my record collection than in my two channel HiFi. The system includes the likes of Linn Sondek, Aesthetix, Atma-Sphere, & Coincident Techn. My very first Lp purchases were brought home (to my mom and dad's) tied to the handle bars of my blue stingray and included Sgt. Pepper (mono). Now I prefer mail order online mostly, although it does take some of the adventure out of it. The gear's great and I'm in it for the music. Cheers!

22 years young. Undergraduate Aerospace Engineering student attending U. of IL. at Urbana-Champaign (I hate North Carolina).

No WAF to worry about for me :) I've owned my trusty McIntosh MC7300 power amp for over a decade and probably has over 10,000 hours on it. Do any of the high-end audio companies take interns?
53 y/o RN Case Mngr for Head & Neck Surgery Clinic, within DOD. Wife not so tolerant but am working with her...at her pace. (Loyd Walker has some Great suggestions on the subject of Spousal acceptance/appreciation of audiophile hobby). Daughter is ga ga over the whole thing....biggest supporter. 7.1 a/v system with tweeks = 35k.
I'm a 39 year old residential real estate broker. I have a 15K HT system (at retail). I got into HT by chance recently and love it, when really just wanting a McIntosh preamp with a tuner, the type of system my parents wouldn't buy me in high school. May upgrade the preamp in the future, but very content. Go with your ears, not the pricetag. I'm not sure a few of my less audiophile enlightened friends even hear the difference. But I have a little music in my background.
53 and a regional manager of human resources for a large bank. In moments of weakness, I admit to being a recovering attorney who has wandered through a range of management assignments in banking. Until a few years ago, I was proud to say my investment in software outpaced the investment in my audio system. Today that’s no longer the case, but with 4,000+ LPs I’m not worrying about the ratio, just enjoying the results.
I'm 29. I'm a Logistics Facilitator for a large candle company. My 2 channel system is a little over $8k.
I'm 58, female, a registered respiratory therapist. A music lover since about the age of 11, I'm relatively new to this wild and crazy hobby/disease.
56 and Family Doctor, unfortunately not a rich American one, but a British one. So I do'nt have a $200,000 system
im a dental technician. i make teeth. living of crazy shiny white teeth wanting people.. who else than the americans..hehe. build a tooth,- buy a toy.
43. Electrical Engineer by training but work as a Director in the networking/pc/IT ghetto.
54 yr old psychologist using binaural beating technology to induce meditative states to win at craps (dice), and create other desired realities.
I'm a 47 year old registered respiratory therapist. My wife is a registered nurse, who listens to the same old early to mid 1970's rock that I do. I've been interested in "high end stereo systems", since listening to a pair of yamaha ns1000 speakers driven by marantz gear in 1976?. I remember the nakamchi dragon cassette deck also being introduced.
i'm a 27 year old social worker and currently working on my master's degree. my two channel system retail is about $20k. add another $6k for the integrated home theater.
