What kind of music did you/will you get married to
I've never seen a post like this one, so I thought I'd pose the question. What kind of music did you have played at your wedding? And did it have any carryover effect into the marriage? ;o) Like the blues fer intstance...
If you're not married, what kind of music would you like to have played?
As for me, I like to tell people we had them play Baroque music. Because after paying for the wedding ourselves, we were "ba-roke".
Wedding song was Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are". Unfortunately, after one year, "just the way she was" got REALLY tired, so after the divorce, I went on a "Free Ride"!
At my wedding, we had Led Zeppelin's "Thank You" and The Beatles "The End" sung. Unfortunately, both groups had broken up at that point, or I am sure they would have come to perform personally.
Your question brings back sweet memories: my college roommate, Philip Aaberg--former Windham Hill pianist, and general keyboard genius extraordinaire, gave us the gift of his music for a wedding present. He played several original improvisations, plus his own version of Abdullah Ibrahim's "The Wedding", all played on a beautiful sounding Mason-Hamlin grand piano. Tears all around, including in the eyes of the bride and groom! Joe
Beethoven STRING QUARTET IN A MINOR Op 132 Heilige Dankgesang eines Genesenden an die Gottheit, in der lydischen Tonart. Molto adagio - Neue kraft fühlend. Andante ('Song of thanksgiving of a convalescent, in the Lydian mode', alternating with Molto adagio ('feeling new strength') But only if you are serious about your marriage. We had a string quartet playing it quite admirably with cues and everything.
I wrote my own ballad/song and worked with the wedding band in the studio to learn it and get it right. Male and female singers in a duet with word representing each of our viewpoints and love for each other at the time. Came out beautiful at the wedding and captured our sentiments toward each other perfectly. Very touching.
However, there is nobody in the world at any wedding, christening, communion or other event that will ever be able to spin a disk for us so we can dance to it. And you will never hear it on the radio. The one downside.
Charles Mingus, "Duke Ellington's Sound of Love." Could have been funnier, I guess, like my marriage itself. But it was gorgeous. Nice procession music.
We had a killer band. In addition to great dance music, they played some love songs. David Murray's "Ming", Abdullah Ibrahim's "Ntyllo, Ntyllo", McCoy Tyner's "You Taught My Heart to Sing". Beautiful.
We had a harpist accomanied by a flutist play for our outdoor wedding. They played background before the wedding and then left after the ceremony.
Then we had a Latin Rock group play for the reception which was really good as the music was enjoyed by all.
For the 'First Dance" I had planned for them to play Louis Armstrong's "Oh, What A Wonderful World" with my Wife's Father beginning the dance and then with me finishing it with her, after the ceremonial 'handoff'. Her Father declared he doesn't dance so my lesson was to just do the dance with her and to forget about his problems.
my bride snuck off to a 'recording studio' before we did the deed and recorded herself singing Allison Krauss' 'When you say nothing at all'. She then had it played for our first dance ...
We exchanged vows to "The Cider House Rules" soundtrack in a simple service at our home in the woods. Six friends, three dogs, the preacher and his wife attended.
Proceded to rock the house with gospel music and blues.
I was just thinking about this the other day. The first one that came to mind was as follows. Kind of an odd song in that it is both up-beat and somewhat dark at the same time. Maybe that's why i can relate : )
"I'll stop the world and melt with you I've seen the difference and it's getting better all the time".... "I've seen the future and it's open wide"...
Modern English "I Melt With You".
Another one, depending on whether or not you're having second thoughts, might be:
"and I ran, i ran so far away"
"I Ran" by Flock of Seagulls
For those couples that are always travelling and don't have time for a formal wedding, they can do a "drive through" wedding in Las Vegas with the following song playing:
"Here in my car, i feel safest of all, i can lock all my doors, it's the only way to live, in cars"...
"Cars" by Gary Numan
This next one is a two-parter. The first part of the song is for those couples that tend to bicker / argue a lot:
"When a problem comes along, you must whip it, when something's going wrong, you must whip it"
The next part of that same song may help kinky couples look forward to their Honeymoon after the ceremony is over and done with:
"I say Whip it, whip it good" : )
"Whip It" by Devo
Hope this helps any prospective brides and grooms : ) Sean >
PS... Can you tell what "musical generation" i grew up in??? : )
