Uber: that is apples to apples and all about information per unit of tape. Less info per inch of tape or inch of groove. Additionally for vinyl with 12” 45 the distance between cut grooves can be spaced much further which allows for better bass.

i was tempted to buy a derelict cutting lathe about ten years ago to learn... glad I didn’t do that...

I discovered this in 1983 with a Dokorder 4 track deck with needle drops of The Band (Rock of  Ages ) and the studio tech / recording engineer took me thru it bit by bit....

fun stuff, gain is like crack - or so they say...

I guess I could also ask why does an lp sound better at 45rpm than 33rpm?
why should tape sound better at 15ips than 7.5ips or 3.75ips?
Inquiring minds need to know!

Dumping anything to tape without careful level matching will get you hooked on several things:

gain
a little low end bump
a whisker of high end roll off (16 k and up )
bit of saturation and harmonics your ear brain likes...

u can get some of the same effect w a high end Casa deck for a lot less $$ ( tape )

B-77 high speed half track in the mobile recording rack....

But it does.
Master analog recording is all done on high speed tapes.
I'm sure Google knows....

I’m guessing less "information" per cm^2 of tape is a good thing???

I was very impressed with Three Chords when I streamed it.
I then recorded it to reel tape at high speed, sounds even better!

I think you are right about Three Chords....seems like it's gonna bear up to repeated listening.

Van KNOWS how to pick a backing band. Great arrangements (as per usual with him). Excellent sonics too.

Should have added "Back On Top" to my previous Minority Report comments about his albums that get listened to frequently.

Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong- whole album is great.
Neil Young- Comes A Time. I love this record. I think it was the last one of his that I can listen straight through and not have the desire to skip a track. I love Nicolette Larson's voice. I recently read that she was a good friend of Linda Ronstadt's. I will have to did and see if they ever recorded anything together.

We thought of them as the English Dream Theater although a little more eclectic at times.

Thanks for the comments, u. I am new to IQ and not exactly smitten (yet?) but willing to invest more time. Came across them only recently, probably by way of a "similar albums" listing on the AllMusic Guide. I’ll be certain to check out Nomzamo and Road of Bones.

I have been a huge IQ fan since day one back many years ago.( Early eighties?).
In fact the very first album I listened to called Nomzamo is still one of my favorites and gets played a lot.

IQ - Subterranea
Music with a big debt to Genesis but not quite as inspired...or so I think right now. Only part way through this one. SQ is very very good.  Vocalist has an excellent voice. Overall style is kinda like Genesis runs into Rush on Broadway.

well, there is an easy step-up from “ordinary” red book CD .... it is also available in XRCD2 recording that is an appreciable step up in audio performance when played on my REGA ISIS VALVE cdp/.DAC
