@glupson...That's the problem with life sentences...you're only truly dead in the joint if you die of natural causes in a permanent fashion, or someone makes you that way.... As for the latter, it's a toss whether it's better to have the authorities or a jail mate do the deed.
I suspect deep anesthesia is very similar to death in some ways. You 'go under'...there's no dreams, until your consciousness slowly returns. Awareness that you're again aware of being 'back'...sound returns like a volume control rising, again slowly.
Then you become aware of the plastic breathing tube that's still crammed into your mouth it's uncomfortable and getting more so because it's sticking to the sides of your mouth and throat because your mouth is dry as paper...
"Uhgulblth!"
"....he's waking...We'll get that out of your mouth in a moment..." (You're finally aware that they're still setting up in Recovery, but you still can't see...but you think 'not soon enough, dammit...')
"mmfth" Your eyes are open but focus is just starting to work. The room an out-of-focus fishbowl that begins to make sense...
You take a deep breath...without the oxygen mask you've had for 3 days prior....
...and @geoffkait is channeling Dr. Strangelove...@atdavid is greasing a hamster...(Where do you think he's going to put it....and to whom?)....Commune 'Ism's may make a return socially..
I read the article....needed a drink afterwards ( during, actually ). My two takeaways....( 1 ) when geoff asked " Are you Bozo the Clown "....and some of the youtube videos posted by Teo......LMAO.......
"Ear candling"? *Errr* I'll stick with hydrogen peroxide on occasion....
Bromance..*L* The spouse of a previous employer liked to call it 'weenie welding', to which I opined it was more appropo to the gay community.
Glad you like the heart saga, atdave. It was interesting to live through, actually. Esp. the 'live through' part. ;)
And hey, if my little episode here gives pause to consider, not all heart problems are the 'sudden pain before you hit floor' variety. Mine came on slowly; time to plan, consider options, and mentally get set up for it. There's still potential for surprise, there's choices. I was dead set (and nearly so) against open heart surgery. I was well aware of the pain and the long recovery from it. I just happened to be lucky to be in the right time: TAVR had just become an option for patients that were 'younger' than typical, and weren't so far gone that it was the ONLY option. Lucky to be in the right place as well: a city with a marvelous heart center in a hospital literally a 1/2 mile from where I sit Now....and the cardiologists that staff it happened to be part of the study of which I'm now a part of.
And, if being a guinea pig for the greater good for y'all as well...hey, I volunteered happily. Take some, give some.
If anyone that reads this, or hears of this from you and it Matters...
Time and trouble spent well. A karmic duty, perhaps a debt paid.*S*
I may not win a lottery for cash, but I won the one that mattered. To me, for my spouse, my relatives, and the friends that tolerate me in the flesh. *L*
Y'all are lucky, too. I merely 'pop up' in these various forums and be a pest poking a keyboard in jest. Sometimes I do come up with the rare aside that makes some sort of nonsensical sense, but I have to wait them as well....
And, as for that...I do thank y'all for your tolerance. I try to give what I get, basically. ;)
Do you recall what Clemenceau once said about war? He said war was too important to be left to the generals. When he said that, 50 years ago, he might have been right. But TODAY, war is too important to be left to politicians. They have neither the time, the training, nor the inclination for strategic thought. I can no longer sit back and allow Communist infiltration, Communist indoctrination, Communist subversion and the international Communist conspiracy to sap and IMPURIFY all of our precious ....bodily fluids.
Oh, no, hopefully nobody started mentioning communism. We have been through this before and it would have been an embarrassment for all involved. Had all involved only had a clue what they were writing.
To the person that is trying to imply that an informed public is somehow akin to communism, and yet exhibits the characteristics of marxists themselves in their attempted stifling of informed debate:
Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries.
I don’t know if it’s true or not and I don’t care for Dylan’s music. But I’m only going by what Dylan said. I don’t know if he was joking or not. He seems like a pretty serious person though.
I gave up a long time ago trying to convert pseudo skeptics. I’m not trying to set the world on fire. I just want to start a flame in a few hearts. But as Bob Dylan says at the end of all his records, good luck to you.
I give this a solid 4.3/10. It it most definitely not your best work.

bad. I stopped reading your posts several days ago. And I decided after
giving it about two seconds of thought not to go back and read your
rebuttal of my take-down. I’m sure it’s FOS, though wordy. Just like the
“scientific” article. But thanks for thinking of me anyway.

Perhaps with all the bloviating and chest pumping, not to mention actual heart surgery (interesting story by the way), you missed my excellent dismissal of your attempted take down where I showed the tool you used in your attempted take down was made of Balsa wood. Do I really need to point out that you failed, in your analysis, to differentiate between loud ostriches and the silent majority, which is really not a good look since the paper, for whatever faults it has, clearly does ... but really, the tool made of Balsa was enough to take out your take down, light it on fire, and watch it go up in smoke ... which it did quickly, and with a pleasant aroma being made of Balsa.
No worries geoff, I humour you because I understand you need the mental banter to keep your mind sharp, and that you would argue from a position of obvious error or ignorance just for the sport and mental arithmetic. I see you call out snake-oil on here all the time, you just bury it in banter so many do not notice.
geoffkait18,126 posts11-09-2019 4:20pmJust as I expected. atdavid attacked me personally rather than respond to my brilliant take-down of the “scientific” article he linked to in his OP. Now ask me if I was expecting anything different. It appears to me and I hope I’m not being overly judgmental but atdavid is basically saying do as I say not as I do.
Think of me as you would the caretaker Delbert Grady in The Shining. I’ve always been here.
“If I could explain it to the average Joe Blow they wouldn’t have given me the Nobel prize.”
Didn't Mick Jagger have something like that recently? Maybe it was a different valve.
I apologize, mentioning heart attack and pacemaker just raised an alert so I was trying to make sure you do not confuse those two. Not that I think you are not much better expert than me now, but sometimes we notice what is happening to others much more than what is happening to us.

Arrhythmia would be more correct...'skipping a beat' or so....
Due to a lack of a proper 'seal' in my aortic valve, I'd literally 'back flow'.
Tired, lack of energy...the 'pauses' were a likely side effect, unrelated but noticed during rehab.
TAVR was terrific, though. Woke from the anesthesia feeling near normal..well, what I call normal, anyway. *G*
Some actually get to go home the following day; one went and played a round of golf. (I assume he still used a cart....)
They kept me around for 3 days, since I was considered 'experimental'. ("I'm a lab critter.....I bite.") Certainly not because of my good looks or toleration of hospital food....*eh*
The Watchman came later, after rehab....I'm thin, so I've a visible lump in front of my left shoulder. I asked if it's a concern about fragility.
I was told that, in one case, it stopped a .38 bullet....and still worked.
So I'll have to be very nimble, just in case... ;)
Yes @asvjerry headphones can be really good. But I found myself listening more and more to my speakers, so I pulled the plug. Helped raising money for other purchases too. Having said this, I may be back to the headphones in the future. I am not that old
Neither do I use headphones, actually earphones, at home. I rarely use Bluetooth speakers at home, too. However, I do use earphones from time to time while travelling.
Since you are being serious... I no longer use headphones at home. Just speakers. I was big into headphones until a couple of years Ago, and when my kids were little. Now they grew up, so no issue with cranking up speakers.
My last headphones pair I sold less than a year ago. Focal Utopia. You can see my transactions history here on Audiogon, Head-Fi, and US Audiomart (same user name). I had owned other headphones too, about a dozen, my second favorite was Senn HD800. Headphones amps too. Several. My favorite was Headamp GSX MKII.
@glupson, yes to some degree. I've been lucky enough to be in a test group for the Watchman unit. You may have seen the ads...
During rehab for TAVR, it was noted that I 'defib' spontaneously. Not enough to keel over, just...a 'pause'.
They really didn't want all the trouble and expense of repairing me to go to waste, literally. So I've gotten to be a part of a study to explore an advanced defib/pacer.
Instead of the defib going off like a hammer in my chest, this one 'gently prods' my heart into motion again, with the pacer resetting the beat....so to speak.
I have noticed it 'doing it's thing' occasionally. I'm quite happy about that, overall.
Oh, I can be a 'poster organism' for TAVR. They didn't know Why my aortic valve went bad (<10% function) until they went in...
Mutant valve; only 2 flaps instead of the usual 3. Apparently genetic, my older brother passed 2 years ago, likely from the same thing, undiagnosed.
My nephew's first born had heart issues. Yep, bad valve. Expresses in the males. *sigh*
OK glubson, I thought you were being serious for a moment. You are just monkeying around and snarky. Have a nice weekend. Enjoy your Walkman (and I am NOT being snarky here)
I saw that Innuos machine recently. Can storage be expanded? 1TB seems quite stingy on space, no matter what magic dust was sprinkled on it. What is the deal with DSD? It does not list it under playable formats but lists it under sample rates.
EDIT: Nevermind, I just noticed it can be up to 4TB.
I thought I was asked what I play with....ergo, cards face up.
And by ’nearly all digital’, that refers to the electronics. TT’s & cassettes need not apply.
Speakers don’t qualify either, but I’ve not heard a digital speaker as yet. Somebody, some day will figure out how to make silicone sing other than passing bits ’n bytes by...
Yeah, GK is certainly more ’conventional’, and definitely better ’equipped’ than yours truly. I do have a pair of my DIY’s in my office next to the above ’pile’, acting as ’puter monitors. Something in the home as well...certainly not as 'extensive', no....
I have owned things in the past that have had more of a ’pedigree’. This in many ways is more satisfying to me. Basically amassed for my version of an ’audio indulgence’, and to allow me to fool about with my DIY ’stuff’.
The DIY factor is more of a focus point for me at this juncture. I like it as a counterpoint to what I/we do for a living. That, in itself, is creative and satisfying...
We design, build, and install custom playgrounds. Our clients...are you children....or grandchildren. Trying to make them Healthy, and pry them away from the Xbox.
Things from those links actually produce sounds/music and are, as I mentioned last night, what I mostly listen to. It may seem low-end and not worth bragging rights but it works. I am not mentioning car stereo that I use at times and I forgot to list my Walkman and earphones (IE 80, MDR EX800ST, PK2, not to look for links now).
I own a few more pieces of equipment that are a little bulkier but they barely ever get turned on. I even own turntables (plural).
That is one pretty amplifier you have. It brings back memories of that town.
Hey @glupson... check under Systems. Do you know how to do so? Click on my user name, then details, then System. I have described it all there. And a couple of pictures too
Oh, and my workbench for audiophilia is next to all this. SAF is not an issue (she likes the Maggie's best), power is not a factor, all the equipment rests on recycled stone shelves 1" thick supported by 'tiptoed' 4x6's...and anything that creates heat has 'puter fans pushing air.
Seriously weird....in more ways than one.
You can keep your whatever. If I break anything, I won't have a heart attack. (Have a defib/pacemaker, anyway...*L*)
If three trurntables are "nearly" in that "nearly all digital", what would only one be?
I got knocked out by all that equipment listed. I think I will stick sparing with geoffkait, his system is much more aligned with mine. Maybe I should befriend him on Twitter. I just have to be careful not to befriend him on Tinder by mistake.
Yes, yes, pointless blathering. And your point is?
@atdavid, I'll take your 11:55 post literally. As for catcalls, provide your own litterbox. *G*
Anyway... 1 Russound multi-channel amp; 6-2 channel amps, any or all can be mono'd. Each can drive 4 individual speakers, individual channel levels, delay, line input or individual...a distribution unit chosen for flexibility, but 'clean' enough for nuance enough.... No preamp. Don't need nor want. HP Pavilion 'puter, this 'n that programs. (A pending addition is a purpose-built one with a Ryzen 5, Asus mobo, Asus Essence STX2 audio card with the break-out card, and some other cute adds. If there be a preamp, this will qualify. The HP will become a 'monitor' unit....) 2-Behringer 8024 digital EQ's; one room eq., the other for monitoring with the RTA for whatever I want to... Behringer 2496 digital Xover Behringer MX982 digital splitter/mixer Two switch arrays, one an old Niles CPM-31 6x6 that still works flawlessly, the other a JVC JX-5777 AV digital switcher 6inx2out Yamaha 6 cd player for when I'm lazy Yamaha & Nakamichi dual cassette units (I have some....who doesn't, somewhere...with music that would be difficult to replace now....) 3 turntables: A Garrard Z100 in 10/10 shape, a Teac auto-play (again for the lazy factor), and a Rabco SL8 on a Marantz d-drive tablephysically modified. All of which are tangential, the Z100 being an anachronism that does work. A couple hundred albums of various, played when I feel the desire. All of which get d'stat and carbon fiber'ed before & after... Finally, the speakers. Most of which have been collected and used for 'reference' use... A pair of ESS AMT 'large' dipole drivers (High to upper mid) Pair Polk 6" with 6" passive + 1" polydome tweets (mid to upper bass) Pair Kenwood 3-way, tweets and mids disconnected, 10" woofers only (mid bass) Polk Sub, 6" ported (lower bass..."boomp" enough...) Pair SMGa Maggies' (general overall qualities; again, a reference) Pair of my DIY Walsh, 5" main cone + 1.5" tweets; yes, a 2-way. Pair of vintage Utah 12" with 3x9 horns, time aligned into a Walsh/Ohm arrangement; done mostly to get them off the floor and Doing Something. The 'grins 'n giggles' development department....
All of this resides in a steel 42lx24wx13h building that we use as an office/storage space, with a sauna.inside....and my 'stuff'.
I can play this as loud as I might care to at anytime of day/night. We have a live/work situation. My commute is 30'
Not flawless in any respect that you might consider such. But, it does what I like and performs in an acceptable fashion for what I'm up to.
And it didn't cost a small fortune to amass.
I'm big on flexibility, as I opened with. And it's nearly all digital.
