I've compared the Yggy to my old Monarchy NM24 (tube and solid state), the DAC built into the Wyred4Soung mPre and the output from the Oppo 103D and find it to be far the most natural and open or that grouping.

The Yggy has been out for about a month or so and is thought of very highly. One guy has MSB Analog DAC with external power supply and 4x USB input module ($11,500 list) and feels the Yggy is just as detailed but not as musical. Under my direction a friend in SoCal has done some easy to do and inexpensive mods to his Yggy with startling results (way more detailed and musical). I have posted the current mods on my website for all to see and all to do themselves, if so inclined. There will be more mods and probably a zero feedback fet stage that I will possibly add. Right now my friend is thrilled with the changes but would love to A/B with some other serious DACs so if you want to hear a modded Yggy then let me know and we can hook you up with this guy....he is in Pocoima. I think his modded Yggy would be much better than the MSB Analog DAC.....so DACs like the Bricasti, The Total DAC Dual, Empirical Audio DAC, Lampizator Golden Gate, and Berkeley Reference would be nice to compare with. I have a feeling the modded Yggy would do very well against these DACs and there is much more to do....much more. The "mixed" impressions were from a recent CamJam headphone show, where the DAC was initially not powered up for a sufficient amount of time to reach its best performance. The manual for the Yggdrasil specifically requires the unit to be on continually for best performance, and even for a minimum of a few days after its initial break-in. YMMV |
I am not getting one right away. I will wait till someone sends me one to mod. Check out this thread for future reviews: http://www.head-fi.org/t/667711/new-schiit-ragnarok-and-yggdrasil/5655 and also here: http://www.changstar.com/index.php?topic=2047.310 I have only seen raves from those that had the proto at home. |
Why does Schiit use such difficult names esp. since they aren't really exotic, just sound that way. Well not really of Germanic/Slavic/Norse origin, just some made up part of the world that doesn't exist. The product names are all based on names and terms found in Norse mythology. Is it gimmicky? Sure. But if Wilson Audio can refer to their woofer modules as "Puppies", calling an amp "Ragnarok" is no worse an offense. As for the name of the company, you generally can't trademark profanities. So "Schiit" with it's spelling is allowed, while "Shit" would not be. They have made some stuff with tubes, perhaps with enough outcry they will heed your call. Jason Stoddard (one of the co-founders) has stated that they have no intention of doing a tubed DAC. It would take a lot of complaining to make that happen. |
Winson - also some good info on MQA available here, although not as extensive as in the new issue of TAS. |

I guess as long as the stuff is good.... they are fine.. They have made some stuff with tubes, perhaps with enough outcry they will heed your call. |
