My Long List of Amplifiers and My Personal Review of Each!

So I have been in a long journey looking to find the best amplifiers for my martin logan montis. As you know, the match between an amplifier and speakers has to be a good "marriage" and needs to be blend exquisitely. Right now, I think I might have found the best sounding amplifier for martin logan. I have gone through approximately 34-36 amplifiers in the past 12 months. Some of these are:

Bryston ST, SST, SST2 series
NAD M25
PARASOUND HALO
PARASOUND CLASSIC
KRELL TAS
KRELL KAV 500
KRELL CHORUS
ROTEL RMB 1095
CLASSE CT 5300
CLASSE CA 2200
CLASSE CA 5200
MCINTOSH MC 205
CARY AUDIO CINEMA 7
OUTLAW AUDIO 755
LEXICON RX7
PASS LABS XA 30.8
BUTLER AUDIO 5150
ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005

With all that said, the amplifiers I mentioned above are the ones that in my opinion are worth mentioning. To make a long story short, there is NO 5 CHANNEL POWER AMP that sounds as good as a 3ch and 2ch amplifier combination. i have done both experiments and the truth is that YOU DO lose details and more channel separation, etc when you select a 5 channel power amplifier of any manufacturer.
My recollection of what each amp sounded like is as follows:

ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005 (great power and amazing soundstage. Very low noise floor, BUT this amplifiers NEEDS TO BE cranked up in order to fully enjoy it. If you like listening at low volume levels or somewhat moderate, you are wasting your time here. This amp won’t sound any different than many other brands out there at this volume. The bass is great, good highs although they are a bit bright for my taste)

NAD M25 (very smooth, powerful, but somewhat thin sounding as far as bass goes)
Bryston sst2(detailed, good soundstage, good power, but can be a little forward with certain speakers which could make them ear fatiguing at loud volumes)

Krell (fast sounding, nice bass attack, nice highs, but some detail does get lost with certain speakers)

rotel (good amp for the money, but too bright in my opinion)

cary audio (good sound overall, very musical, but it didn’t have enough oomph)

parasound halo (good detail, great bass, but it still holds back some background detail that i can hear in others)

lexicon (very laid back and smooth. huge power, but if you like more detail or crisper highs, this amp will disappoint you)

McIntosh mc205 (probably the worst multichannel amp given its price point. it was too thin sounding, had detail but lacked bass.

butler audio (good amplifier. very warm and smooth sweet sounding. i think for the money, this is a better amp than the parasound a51)

pass labs (very VERY musical with excellent bass control. You can listen to this for hours and hours without getting ear fatigue. however, it DOES NOT do well in home theater applications if all you have is a 2 channel set up for movies. The midrange gets somewhat "muddy" or very weak sounding that you find yourself trying to turn it up.

classe audio (best amplifier for multi channel applications. i simply COULDNT FIND a better multi channel amplifier PERIOD. IT has amazing smoothness, amazing power and good bass control although i would say krell has much better bass control)

Update: The reviews above were done in January 2015. Below is my newest update as of October 2016:

PS AUDIO BHK 300 MONOBLOCKS: Amazing amps. Tons of detail and really amazing midrange. the bass is amazing too, but the one thing i will say is that those of you with speakers efficiency of 87db and below you will not have all the "loudness" that you may want from time to time. These amps go into protection mode when using a speaker such as the Salon, but only at very loud levels. Maybe 97db and above. If you don’t listen to extreme crazy levels, these amps will please you in every way.

Plinius Odeon 7 channel amp: This is THE BEST multichannel amp i have ever owned. Far , but FAR SUPERIOR to any other multichannel amp i have owned. In my opinion it destroyed all of the multichannel amps i mentioned above and below. The Odeon is an amp that is in a different tier group and it is in a league of its own. Amazing bass, treble and it made my center channel sound more articulate than ever before. The voices where never scrambled with the action scenes. It just separated everything very nicely.

Theta Dreadnaught D: Good detailed amp. Looks very elegant, has a pleasant sound, but i found it a tad too bright for my taste. I thought it was also somewhat "thin" sounding lacking body to the music. could be that it is because it is class d?

Krell Duo 300: Good amp. Nice and detailed with enough power to handle most speakers out there. I found that it does have a very nice "3d" sound through my electrostatics. Nothing to fault here on this amp.
Mark Levinson 532H: Great 2 channel amp. Lots of detail, amazing midrange which is what Mark Levinson is known for. It sounds very holographic and will please those of you looking for more detail and a better midrange. As far as bass, it is there, but it is not going to give you the slam of a pass labs 350.5 or JC1s for example. It is great for those that appreciate classical music, instrumental, etc, but not those of you who love tons of deep bass.

 It is articulate sounding too
Krell 7200: Plenty of detail and enough power for most people. i found that my rear speakers contained more information after installed this amp. One thing that i hated is that you must use xlr cables with this amp or else you lose most of its sound performance when using RCA’s.

Krell 402e: Great amp. Very powerful and will handle any speaker you wish. Power is incredible and with great detail. That said, i didn’t get all the bass that most reviewers mentioned. I thought it was "ok" in regards to bass. It was there, but it didn’t slam me to my listening chair.

Bryston 4B3: Good amp with a complete sound. I think this amp is more laid back than the SST2 version. I think those of you who found the SST2 version of this amp a little too forward with your speakers will definitely benefit from this amp’s warmth. Bryston has gone towards the "warm" side in my opinion with their new SST3 series. As always, they are built like tanks. I wouldn’t call this amp tube-like, but rather closer to what the classe audio delta 2 series sound like which is on the warm side of things.

Parasound JC1s: Good powerful amps. Amazing low end punch (far superior bass than the 402e). This amp is the amp that i consider complete from top to bottom in regards to sound. Nothing is lacking other than perhaps a nicer chassis. Parasound needs to rework their external appearance when they introduce new amps. This amp would sell much more if it had a revised external appearance because the sound is a great bang for the money. It made my 800 Nautilus scream and slam. Again, amazing low end punch.

Simaudio W7: Good detailed amp. This amp reminds me a lot of the Mark Levinson 532h. Great detail and very articulate. I think this amp will go well with bookshelves that are ported in order to compensate for what it lacks when it comes to the bass. That doesn’t mean it has no bass, but when it is no Parasound JC1 either.
Pass labs 350.5: Wow, where do i begin? maybe my first time around with the xa30.8 wasn’t as special as it was with this monster 350.5. It is just SPECTACULAR sounding with my electrostatics. The bass was THE BEST BASS i have ever heard from ANY amp period. The only amp that comes close would be the jC1s. It made me check my settings to make sure the bass was not boosted and kept making my jaw drop each time i heard it. It totally destroyed the krell 402e in every regard. The krell sounded too "flat" when compared to this amp. This amp had amazing mirange with great detail up top. In my opinion, this amp is the best bang for the money. i loved this amp so much that i ended up buying the amp that follows below.

Pass labs 250.8: What can i say here. This is THE BEST STEREO AMP i have ever heard. This amp destroys all the amps i have listed above today to include the pass labs 350.5. It is a refined 350.5 amp. It has more 3d sound which is something the 350.5 lacked. It has a level of detail that i really have never experienced before and the bass was amazing as well. I really thought it was the most complete power amplifier i have ever heard HANDS DOWN. To me, this is a benchmark of an amplifier. This is the amp that others should be judged by. NOTHING is lacking and right now it is the #1 amplifier that i have ever owned.

My current amps are Mcintosh MC601s: i decided to give these 601s a try and they don’t disappoint. They have great detail, HUGE soundstage, MASSIVE power and great midrange/highs. The bass is great, but it is no pass labs 250.8 or 350.5. As far as looks, these are the best looking amps i have ever owned. No contest there. i gotta be honest with you all, i never bought mcintosh monos before because i wasn’t really "wowed" by the mc452, but it could have been also because at that time i was using a processor as a preamp which i no longer do. Today, i own the Mcintosh C1100 2 chassis tube preamp which sounds unbelievable. All the amps i just described above have been amps that i auditioned with the C1100 as a preamp. The MC601s sound great without a doubt, but i will say that if you are looking for THE BEST sound for the money, these would not be it. However, Mcintosh remains UNMATCHED when it comes to looks and also resale value. Every other amp above depreciates much faster than Mcintosh.

That said, my future purchase (when i can find a steal of a deal) will be the Pass labs 350.8. I am tempted to make a preliminary statement which is that i feel this amp could be THE BEST stereo amp under 30k dollars. Again, i will be able to say more and confirm once i own it. I hope this update can help you all in your buying decisions!

It's not that the pandora is on the relaxed sound but rather that it evens out the tonality of the Mephisto. It takes the incoming signals and balances out all frequencies. Nothing is too tilted or too relaxed.
Everything seems spot on. The bass is deep with zero overhang and nothing jumps at you.

That's beautiful.  Also, I got a hint from your remarks comparing the Pandora with the Christine, is that it is more relaxed and more detailed than the Christine at the same time.  My position is that more relaxation is usually associated with less clarity.  Mrgray had an interesting statement, "the sheer resolution of the Mephisto system sort of is challenging and cerebral whereas that Arc plus Merrill sound just delighted in a more visceral way I feel."  From my listening to the songs on your videos, I agree with this statement.  That was with the Christine, which when driving the Mephisto, makes it perhaps more cerebral and detailed than the Pandora driving the Mephisto (we haven't yet heard the Pandora/Mephisto).  It is clear that you LIKE the Pandora/Mephisto combo better than the Christine/Mephisto combo, finding it more relaxed.  Things like Nordost Odin 1 are more detailed than other cables, but you don't like Nordost with Mephisto.

This suggests that you slightly prioritize relaxation over clarity.  It also suggests that there is no monolithic Gryphon sound.  Mephisto is about ultimate detail and clarity, but as you said, Essence and Antileon have different tonalities.  Gryphon VIP cables are slightly on the soft side, and now you find that Pandora is slightly on the soft and relaxed side.  Perhaps the Pandora will change with break in.

With mediocre recordings, you seem to prioritize relaxation over clarity.  But I suspect with better, more natural recordings, you might put more emphasis on clarity/detail.  I know you have another super preamp coming.  It will be interesting to see how this super preamp balances relaxation with detail.  I loved the detail of the Christine/Mephisto, and also found it natural.

Hi Viber
I’m actually exhausted because I went to bed at 230am listening to music trying song after song and was simply in disbelief with each song.
It feels as if someone came into my room, ran room correction, put more acoustic panels and bass traps. Everything locked in and since you are a person that likes clarity, all I can say is there is a ton of that here with the muscle and dynamics that I love.
I am actually enjoying everything I play through it and yet I am STILL using the factory powercords on the Gryphon Pandora. I have plans of using upgraded powercords on it down the road but not now. I don’t want to let my curiousity get a hold of me at least during this honeymoon phase I got going on.
Yes I plan to try better PCs on the preamp and on the dac down the road.
I have dragon powercords on the sidelines ready for the Pandora, but I want to slowly improve things from here.
He already said it. It’s not and never been about the music.
It’s about trying, showing and shuffling the equipment...

I just heard the latest video.  Since you are so happy with the sound, how about curing your nervousness about making any component changes, by learning more music you can enjoy.  What's the point of great equipment without using it as a means of getting more out of the music?  Most people at lower levels of accomplishment than you, get out all their recordings and enjoy them anew.
Stay tuned !!!!
I can't comment and jinx myself. You will be with front row tickets when the change takes place. I'm still about 2 weeks away from doing it.
Prediction based on close following and reading between lines:

Alexia 2 will soon be gone, to be replaced by either Magico or Focal.
@kren:
Thanks man. Greatly appreciate the support. I'll be doing a few videos soon. I think today's video was as public as I could have been. Yes this is the best system I've put together. The entire system is superior to many other systems I've owned. I have exceeded what I have put together in my past and that is really all i can ask for.
Glad you feel like you’ve found your best sound, WC!!

But, with all due respect, we’ll be the judge of that!! (over our iPhone speakers)

Haha, just kidding. Seriously, congrats!  Now let us hear it!

goodsource,

Thanks for your response. To me, the general definition of "dark" is rolled off HF.  I have had dark tube preamps/amps with rolled off HF compared to other tube preamps/amps which I would label as less dark.  I have had dark SS amps where the same applies, although the general spectrum of tubes is darker than SS even if there is some overlap.

You may have answered my question in the past about CH Precision amps--sorry I forgot.  Mike Fremer in his review of the M1.1 said there is an adjustment of the amount of negative feedback (NF) used.  He said that maximum NF yielded "cold" tone, but minimum NF yielded "warm" tone.  For most of his review, he chose a setting with a little NF, making the sound on the warm side.  What did you find with varying amounts of NF?

I have not heard either the Mephisto or the CH.  My general extrapolations from WC's and my experience with other amps is that the Mephisto is the most neutral and least warm of all the amps WC has tried.  That's why he didn't like the Nordost Odin1 cables with the Mephisto, but liked them with other amps which are warmer in tone.

Have you A/B'ed Mephisto vs CH Precision?

I'd like to see a review of my amps: the NY Audio Lab version of the Futterman OTLs, the OTL3.
@viber6
i have CH M1.1 and L1 preamp.i think gryphon mephisto and M1.1 are in the same league and one is not better than another and both have very different kind of presentation and for different people in terms of what they are looking in terms of presentation
CH is an extremely modern amplifier with tons of customizability and no other company comes close to it .
both mephisto and CH are very detailed.
-  also some one needs to clearly explain the word DARK adjective that always gets used  with gryphon in general and mephisto that gryphon amps are dark. some take it in a good way and some take it bad way depending upon which camp you are
There was a poster who summarized his friends' findings that the CH Precision was very close to the Merrill 118 in sound character.  Since I found the Merrill 114 (close to the 118) to be euphonic compared to my Bryston and Mytek amps, and WC found the Mephisto to be more detailed and neutral compared to his 118, I take the forum comments with a few grains of salt.  I know only what I hear, although I'll be happy to read your links.
Viber I’m pretty sure they were clear at describing it on the dark side.

It can be that it was compared to CH Precision...and I just don’t remember the context precisely. I will try to find the exact thread and give the link.
Techno,
What forums show different findings from WC on the Mephisto?  Even from my mediocre computer audio, I hear the Mephisto as not at all dark, but very crisp and clear, my kind of sound.  In fact, I heard better clarity with Alexia 2 + Mephisto than from 20.7 + Dag on the song, Keith don't go.  Very surprising to me, but I have to call it as I hear it.
Sounds wonderful WC.  If ARC Ref 6se plus 118's was the last high point, I do feel Christina plus Mephisto now eclipses it for a super refined audiophile presentation.  Arguably there is a vibrancy to each note in the Mephisto presentation that is not present in the overall 118 presentation.  I must admit though that I think I prefer the 118 presentation at this time simply because the Mephisto is a little overwhelming (although I am sure I will get used to it better as i hear it more).

The sheer resolution of the Mephisto system sort of is challenging and cerebral whereas that Arc plus Merrill sound just delighted in a more visceral way I feel.

Thank goodness some decent speakers are back!  I really like these and think they are a great match with these high res hifi components.

As i indicate on the YT comments though, it almost makes one tremble at what might be achieved when Pandora is up and running at full strength.  The challenge with the Mephisto setup I imagine is to let the sound wash over you when the resolution is so high.  I am sure that is much easier for you WC than it is for us the virtual audience.

I played your latest video thru my headphones first and then my system and was better able to feel what the Mephisto is doing via the latter.  Just that extraordinary high res atmosphere it creates which music comes out of.  My system is pretty optimised for YT but still, amazing what is coming thru.

Great work WC.  A peak that may not be surpassed for some time approaches!
Something I don’t understand is that, on every forum I follow, audiophiles using and comparing the Gryphon Mephisto are pretty much agreeing that amp is dark sounding...

They seem to agree with WC about the heavy bass reproduction, someone even writing it is like having the bass tone control of your amp on full throttle...
Which is absolutely not my cup of tea, I do prefer a more normal bass oriented amp.

So I’m wandering if that particular Mephisto is a faulty one, or it’s the Alexia 2 that are far from being broken in. It should not sound bright with Nordost new line of cables. Somethin’s fishy, again.
No problem Ron!
Yep each cable is system dependent. It's certainly an art that is costly and painful but once you have arrived, it really makes all the efforts worth it.
WCSS

I don't find the Odin1 cables bright or anemic in the bass in my Simaudio / YG system, but I also don't listen at the volume level you listen. Without ever having the pleasure of hearing the Mephisto in person I do hear an extremely detailed presentation on your videos. I can sure see why Odin1 and the Mephisto would not be a good match. I'm just guessing that if I placed the Gryphon VIP cables in my system I would not like them as much as I do the Odin1's. My statement regarding the Dragon HC PC vs the Odin1 PC is based on the last 2 weeks of me demoing your Dragon HC PC in my system. I very much enjoyed my time with the Dragon HC PC. I placed it in every possible combination I could to thoroughly understand the sound signature of it vs my Odin1 PC's. I found the Dragon to be more forgiving of poor recordings and not quite as detailed as Odin1. In my system it rolled off the high frequencies and slightly elevated the bottom end.

You learning which cables to pair with the Mephisto is resulting in a better overall listening experience. I can't wait to hear the Pandora preamp. Thank you again for letting me demo your Dragon HC PC in my system.
It's hard to really gauge bass and know exactly what it sounds like unless you're in the room. The mic can't really capture the pounding on your chest or the vibration of the chair while you sit on it. That's why you always have to keep that in mind and also if someone wants more bass or less bass etc then that's understandable but that becomes a matter of taste and not really the way a particular recording is meant to be heard.
I don't know if I'll ever do subwoofers with speakers because the level of bass i get in here is really excellent but again this needs to be felt IN HERE to really understand what is happening.
Post removed
at some point of time jay will definitely have to experiment with good sub woofers as well.no audio system is ever complete without a subwoofer.again subwoofer is not for just more bass or slam or SPL, they simply improve the spatiality and definition of bass and augment main speakers.even though alexia 2 can dig deeper and mephisto can provide good slam, a subwoofer can do things that main speakers cannot even dream about.
there is a a reason even WAMM chronosonic 800k comes with 100k thor hammer subwoofers. and same with YG or magico that have specialised subwoofers because ultimate lower bass definition can simply not be achieved out of a conventional full range speaker how ever expensive it might be.
Just wait until you hear the pandora...lol. You’ll find out why things sound the day they do.

As far as bass, wait for pandora...just wait :)
The difference will be easily heard... everything locks in perfectly.
Odin speaker cables are too bright and the powercords aren’t welcomed by the mephisto. They make the bass anemic and add more brightness. This has never been easier for me to gauge. The mephisto makes everything sound off as it should. Bright or lean or rolled off etc. Whatever you put in, that’s what you get.
As far as bass, the chair vibrates and the room pressurizes if you play a song that is meant to sound that way. It won't add bass to s song that doesn't really have it.
I have the same CM shelf for my amp. I remember it taking at least a week to settle in. During that week it would sound bright one day and a little bassy the next, so it's too early to critically listen. If it sounds too bassy it could also be the Dragon HC PC's. Compared to Odin1 they have less top end energy and more bottom end energy.
Hate to say it but bass sounds a bit much and not as tight as I'd ideally like it, second and third tracks.  Not in room so can't say for sure.  Maybe comes down to personal preferences and maybe you think it sounds perfect - I wouldn't argue.  But if me I'd be looking to tame a bit.  Don't take it as a negative, still sounds amazing.  Just one person's opinion.

On the idea of G1 (or the top Rel, whatever it is called) subwoofers helping out the 20.7, don't discount the idea that they could help out the Alexia 2's also.  As I've mentioned before here, I've heard them improve Alexx, the step up from Alexia 2.
my guess is mephisto would absolutely benefit from CMS stand.CMS is the best of the best and pretty much a leader in that category.and considering its been custom designed for the mephisto, i think it will easily outperform artesania or anything else. and iam optimistic that mephisto will benefit greatly from it
WC,
No, I was very impressed with the Artesania stand with the Dag S250 amp, even on my stock iMac audio.  Since the Mephisto is far more revealing than the Dag amp, I expect to be impressed by the Critical Mass stand as well, even with my mediocre computer audio.  Of course, using the same songs as you have already presented, this will be evident.

But you never know until you listen to a variety of music.  Most top companies are proud of their work, and deny that accessories make an improvement to their products.  I know that you have said that you don't like power conditioners used for power amps, but some people have found more purity from some power conditioners on power amps even if dynamics may be reduced.  Who knows whether a massive amp like the Mephisto will benefit from a stand.  We will all do the comparative listening using previous videos.
my iPad is either connected to a woo audio wa11 portable dac, and then connected to any one of my many headphones, or wirelessly through the Hi-Fiman Amanda BTs.
No headphones, but i am limited to the capability of my system, sounds a lot like MBL 101E’s with 9011 amps and Martin Logan Statement E2 subwoofer towers, nice slam !
So if you use and iPad and headphones what the difference as long as you use headphones with it.
It’s a teaser...it’s to show the Mephisto on the stand with something playing...
Also, most of you use ipads to listen (yes youtube tells me this) so I don’t think you will capture much from the stand so don’t expect to hear a difference.
For those of you who have a decent set of headphones, you will pick up differences. Stay tuned.
I don't understand the teaser.  Why didn't you play the exact recordings that you used in the last video?  How can we learn anything from one different song?
I thought your last video was the cleanest with great speed and good decay. Could have been from the Christine pre in the chain? (Hope it was in the mix or .....lol)
I am NOT getting the mephisto off of the stand. It's there and it won't move anymore. Whatever we have before the stand was added is what we have as a "before" the stand. 250 lbs with sharp heatsinks isn't something I'm going to be messing with.
I can't judge anything from this recording.  I know you are just beginning with this teaser #1.  Most informative will be using the same recordings you have played without the stand.  My favorites are Q&A, Baby I love your way, Keith Don't go.  The best recording for natural sound was Perhaps Love, but too bad you only played it on 1 video so far.  I know you are unlikely to go back and forth with and without the Critical Mass stand--too many difficult logistics, and by the time you are physically tired doing the heavy lifting, your ears are tired also.  My best listening is just after I wake up, feeling refreshed.
Thanks.
That song isn't the best recording by the way. If you all play it in your system then you'd know what I'm talking about. That was/is a tease before I begin.
Jay, the snap on that snare drum sounds incredible. I can only image what it sounds like for you to be sitting there listening to it in your own room.

-Crystal clear
-Looong decays
- Speed
-Slam

Gryphon Pandora should easily elevate this to another level. More to come
