My Long List of Amplifiers and My Personal Review of Each!
I wish it was that simple without legal repercussions...I suggest using a CC or PayPal for protection even absorbing the fees. Call it insurance., My CC returns 2% on all purchases so if item is $10,000, only cost me 1% ($100). Have you looked into escrow.com? |
I wish it was that simple without legal repercussions... What you all need to know is that if you send someone money and they decided to "turn bad" that one time and just take your money, it will take thousands upon thousands of dollars of attorney fees to recuperate it. The cops aint coming to save ya... Cops got bigger fish to fry than to worry about your money to buy audio components. You send someone 10k to buy something and they scam you, it will cost you another 10k in lawyer fees plus a lengthy process to get it back on top of all the headache, drama, time off of work and anxiety. The law protects the thief/crook/scammer as much as it protects you. I am warning you all.. You don’t get your money back by calling the cops on someone.. It does not work that way... It takes lawyers and spending money to recuperate the money you have lost. I simply don't understand how these crooks sleep at night... I hardly get any sleep if i am dealing with a complex task at work!! There is nothing more important to me than knowing i don't owe anyone a damn thing and i don't have to hide my face. |
Techno: Mephisto can drive m6. I failed to articulate that i am playing with equipment that sounds great even though it is modestly priced ( 60.8 monos). However, this doesn’t mean that i can’t get more out of the speakers. There is far more potential that I haven’t started to tap into when it comes to these speakers. So far, the dac direct into the 60.8s has sounded amazing. Today i picked up a Preamplifier locally so let's see what it does. |
Tecknik...i meant hercules mk2...not the ones you mentioned which have been there for over 2 years...those are mk1... I don’t really check other websites. I have been scammed 3 times already and just recently was part of another big scam. When you are looking for this level of gear, you should be working with established businesses or people that you are 100% sure of. It’s not the same sending someone 50k for something or 5k... I don’t expect you to understand that though since you are probably not searching for equipment as often as i do. |
Jay's point about the superior cabinet of the M6 makes sense. The ultimate approach in eliminating cabinet resonances is heavy rigid granite, used in Acora speakers reviewed by Kemper Holt. Also, cast iron cabinets used by Jern. I heard the small mini monitor Jern ES 14 EH speaker at Audio Doctor (now Audio Intellect) and it was the best dynamic speaker I have heard for clarity above 90 Hz. Still, the best performance out of these drivers could not approach the clarity and brilliance of my unique Audiostatic 240 electrostatic/Enigmacoustics Sopranino tweeter combo. Let's hear the M6 on familiar good recordings. |
Why no Analog? I'm a bit lazy to embark on buying vinyl and storing them. With as much gear as i go through, I'd have a hard time making vinyl work in my current environment. Is cost reflected on the quality? 9 times out of 10, yes. There is some overpriced stuff out there that should be a third of the msrp. If you are spending a lot of money, try to stick to the names that have earned such high prices. Mágico and wilson have always been at the top but they aren't exactly everyone's cup of tea. |
M3 doesn’t scale as large...I’m not sure why people think that if you grab a pair of bookshelf speakers and use 2 subs that you can get the same effect as their larger sibling speakers but without subs? Some fail to take into consideration the crossover points on the larger speaker versus the smaller speaker plus the fact that the larger size cabinet makes a difference too. The height of the tweeter on the larger speaker. Have you not noticed the bottom of the m6 vs the m3? The m6 rides on 3 mpods versus 4 on the m3. There is more mass "floating in the air" with the m6. Speaking of the Alexx having 2 midrange drivers versus one on the Alexia 2. How about sasha versus alexia ? The Alexia is more effortless much larger sounding. I don’t know why people have this perception that adding subs to smaller speakers gets you the same sound as the larger siblings. That’s a myth in most case and probably only true if the speaker manufacturer is a terrible designer. |
By design Alex has got 2 midrange drivers. So sure it will be better than the Alexia 2 which has only one. A completely different speaker. With the Magico M3 , you still have premium parts all over. It’s just a matter of bass with 3 x 7 inch. woofers instead of 3 x 10 inch. A pair of M3 with 2 Rel subs makes a lot more sense to me. |
Having owned both the m3 and m6, the gap in performance is huge. The m3 is not the same cabinet as m6. The m6 has a "monocoque" design built by a company in Canada that builds submarines and fusilage for airplanes. They might look the same but internally they are not even close. Also, the crossover on the m6 has superior premium parts not found in the m3. Currently, the m6 is used by soulution in their factory to build electronics and synergistic research uses mágico as well to manufacture cables. Besides the bass improvement, you also get a superior dispersion and precision to the nth degree. Is the standard mercedes s550 the same as the s65 amg? They might look similar on the outside..but pop the hood and the preconceived idea will soon be wiped out. |
@thezaks471 Dave, do you have an 866? I'm purchasing one for a backup system and have read many positive reviews about it. |
Could have also ordered the speaker he wanted, and during the 4-5 months of wait time, bring in some lesser expensive speakers and have some rounds with those. Or, perhaps there's something to having back to back high dollar speakers, without a bunch of between time, but we still can't really compare because the electronics have changed so much. Or, perhaps, he thinks it's a risk to not have a high dollar speaker for a longer period of time - possibly losing his following. Still, I think that having some popular less expensive speakers would have still had a nice following. I think he could still make it different from anyone else out there (some props for you WC :-) For myself, I enjoy whatever he does and whatever he decides after all of the suggestions, etc. Looking forward to hearing more of the M6. Nor does Gryphon Diablo, I think. I understand the reasoning behind the speakers choice. I also can sometimes 'read between words' , which was not really much "between". That's not the speakers that Jay wanted but he had to accept the reality, a few elements of it. But it's alright, even those of us who are disappointed will be looking forward to hearing whatever Jay is going to show us. In addition, I think that we simply want to support Jay in his audiophile business endeavour. |

Congratulations on making a speaker choice that is a sonic benchmark and has liquidity in the used marketplace. I really liked your comments on why the other 5 contenders didn't get the nod, I was hoping for Vivid but the resale was deemed difficult in spite of you loving their sonics and looks. Ted uses Magico as his reference speaker so SR cables should be a synergistic pairing. Jay, you made the perfect choice progressing from the ALEXX to M6 for many reasons, kudos to your decision. Can't wait for the Integrated shootout, and I hope the Boulder 866 might grace your room. |
The Boulder 866 does not have preamp outputs. "WC, |

WC, Integrated shootout should be fun! While you have the 60.8s there, it would be cool to use the preamp of your integrateds to feed the 60.8s, just for comparison. That way the 60.8s get some sort of preamp, instead of just being fed from the Rossini. You could probably also compare the preamp section of the two integrateds. Dave |
Speakers/electronics cost proportion. Speaking new equipment. I can imagine having entry level Kharma or Wilson speakers in the future. About $20k. What would I drive them with, at minimum ? Hmm. I would try Soulution 330 integrated with Kharma and Gryphon Diablo 300 with Wilson. I could also try Accuphase E-800 with both. Diablo with phono and dac is over $20k, Soulution and Accuphase too. Plus sources and cables. Speakers can't be 50% the cost of the system, not for me, they are less. |
