The Daptone Gold LP, 24 best tracks by their roster, is amazing as an introduction.

Absolutely. I saw Naomi Shelton & ~The Gospel Queens recently - awesome stuff.

Daptone Records has some fantastic artists.
The New Mastersounds have some serious funk going on. Like some blues with your funk, how about Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears. If you like funky Phish, I'd definitely recommend Trey's Horseshoe Curve.
go to archive.org--every jam band in the universe posts their live shows for downloading--all free and legal
All the daptone stuff is on vinyl and uniformly good. You can explore this off their website and iTunes. Sharon Jones was on a tear in 2007, their first artist to cross over, because her backup band heavily toured the UK around Amy Winehouse. 2010's The Daptone Gold LP, 24 best tracks by their roster, is amazing as an introduction.

I love the early 1970s era of James Brown. Can highly recommend Hell, the double album, and others, the Black Caesar and The Payback OSTs. Bootsy Collins work just anchors that sound.

During this time, OV Wright out of Stax was very much under the radar, a contemporary friend of Al Green and Booker T.
I love his stuff.

I love D'Angelo's Voodoo album of 2000 and the recent work of Eli Paperboy Reed (sings in a style of James Brown) and Raphael Saadiq, who had the best old Skool R & B album last year. Also love the Jill Scott and Angie Stone work of the last decade.
Bongo,

I will investigate. what do you recommend for someone who likes Cold Blood, ToP, Maceo Parker, Rhinocerous, J.B.s and James Brown, Phat Funcktion, Soulive etc. I have found the Brown Sugar label to be pretty good.

I am enjoying remastered Motherlode right now - this has the funkier side of James Brown - less well known stuff - but it is da bomb! Definitely infectious stuff.
Chazro and Shadorne

You cats ever hear the funky stuff on daptone records? That is some good modern stuff.
Oh man, that Hathaway disc is incredible! I can barely read the cover its been pulled out so many times!
Also, Lydia Pense & Cold Blood recorded 'Transfusion' in 2005, I found it in a used CD shop, and sounds as greasy as ever! Websites on the CD are listed as www.digmusic.com & www.coldblood.biz
Came across this old thread (again!) and coincidentally, I'm listening to Donny Hathaway's "Live" playing 'Everything is Everything'. Willie Weeks (the great) is playin' the famous bass solo and the crowd's goin' ape! You should enjoy the David Garfield disc although it's more of a west coast studio/fusion disc, not a 'Live infectious funk jam' at all (but most of what's listed on this thread doesn't fall under that category either). Garfield also recorded the excellent "Tribute To Jeff' Porcaro (legendary late drummer for Steely Dan & Toto) AND IF you enjoy 'live infectious' Fusion, Garfield recorded a live record with the Karizma band called 'Document' that's absolutely killa!
This ain't live but I picked it up on CD recently...seems to be have taken off of the vinyl but this is dynamite infectious stuff!

Cold Blood
I just ordered David Garfield's 2003 album "Giving Back" after listening to this fantastic groove a whole bunch of times.

I defy anyone to listen to this track and keep still!!!!!

Billy Cobham "Stratus" is now playing in the office.

Hey what did you think of the ultimate drum kit in Traps magazine. I liked the cymbal kit worth 2K.

Billy Cobham "The Pleasant Pheasant" next.
OTOH, I'm not sure I'd make it through an hour of partying with George Clinton - and that's a problem, because a P-Funk party never stops.

I quite agree - he was the only disappointment (to me) on the entire DVD - thank goodness he only stayed for a couple of tracks. Jamal Thomas on drums was awesome but I think I prefer Dennis Chambers on "Pass the Peas"...good call on your part on that one!
Shadorne,

I just fired up "My First Name is Maceo" - bought at your suggestion. That is an unbelievable disc! You get the distinct feeling that that band can play anything - and play it better than anyone else can. And it's not just Maceo, either, it's the whole band. Great, great call.

Marty

Leaning more towards soul - but not having brought up Curtis Mayfield's Curtis - Live is almost criminal.
Does the Maceo crowd here own Roots and Grooves? The extended version of "Pass The Peas" is about as funky as it gets. In my book, anyway.

I have been enjoying this disc again recently. I dug out the jewel case and found the reason why it is so Funky - DENNIS CHAMBERS - man can that guy play "in the pocket" - he is among the best drummers alive today, IMHO. He also happens to be the choice of drummer to fill in for David Garabaldi on Tower of Power. (David being another astonishing drummer) The drum solo Dennis uses is the one he also used recently when he toured with Santana.

The German WDR Cologne Big band is darn tight too. My hats off to such an impressive display musicianship.

Audio is 11 out of 10 - there is a proper preservation of dynamics on this CD - it sounds like realistic live music.
I am going to sound like a broken record....but the film "My first name is Maceo" is sonically a masterpiece (DVD with 5.1 and Stereo) and extremely infectious live funk: Pee Wee Willis, Maceo Parker and Fred Wesley are supremely impressive in this film about Maceo, which mostly includes coverage of a concert in a club in Hamburg in 1994 coupled with brief interviews with band members. (It appears to be FILMED - which means you get great quality color and no grain as you normally do with most concert footage that is shot by video cameras.) I simply can't recommend this enough!

For the N'awlins types, Allen Toussaint is the city's gift to funky white folk. This is great pop music, all slathered up with funk for those who never leave the French Quarter. The 2 disc Warner Brothers collection is great.

NILS LANDGREN funk unit - Licence to Funk - not live but an excellent recording and guarenteed to have you foot tapping. Great drumming by Wolfgang Haffner... Ray Parker on vocals I am pleased I got this one - solid throughout.
Try some meters, maceo parker, soulive, galactic, poopa grows funk, kirk denson w/ wo/ tiny universe, live robert walter, graham central station,

dont for get go go , chuck brown
Maceo Parker - Live On PLanet Groove is awesome thanks Tdostert - amazing suggestion - really feels lke you are there
Maceo Parker - Life on Planet Groove. Maceo's always been funky, of course, but this one is the one to get, IMO.
Ah almost forgot the great Christian McBride's Live at The Tonic..on both acoustic and electric jazz w/ Ron Blake, Charlie Hunter, Jason Moran, DJ Logic, Scratch etc.
Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk ... see them this summer 2008 at all the major festivals. Any Agon'ers going to any festivalllls? Thats the way they say it at High Sierra.

I'm way to old for some of these things. Having a bed is more important to me than being up all night.

All I can handle is going to Milwaukee Summerfest, Bastille Days, and working the shows at Alpine Valley Music Theater.
Deep Banana Blackout ... Funk/Jam band from the early 90's. Jen Durkin (vocals) will be touring with the Mickey Hart Band this summer (2008). Lot's of P-Funk, James Brown influences here. "Release the Grease Live". Puts Ian Anderson to shame.
Cymande - Masters of funk. This was re-released not too long ago and if you love funk, you'll love this. Been playing it heavily since I got it a few months ago.
Shadorne .. you mean you get out of your listening chair and dance? OMG. Big smiles here. I see a lot of shows in the summer, I know the feeling.

The new Black Crowes "Warpaint" has a lot of soul to it. Luther Dickenson from North Mississippi All Stars is in the Black Crowes now.
The Dirty Dozen Brass Band do a great cover of The Meters "Cissy Strut"...they are well worth checking out too for infectious funk - you won't be able to keep still I absolutely guarentee it!!
Thx, Scrammm. I am into all kinds of music, and certainly Les Claypool is a killer bass player, Him w Skerik and Mike Dillon sounds very interesting indeed: Dillon is going to have to keep up with Les' antics!*
Henry you have good taste in music, and I bet it sounds fantastic on the systems you have listed.

I hear that Les Claypool is touring this spring and has Skerik and Mike Dillon in his group this time around. I saw both Skerik and Dillon with Charlie Hunter in Jan 2006 before Jam Cruise 4. Any jam cruisers here on Agon? You ought to check out one of the many music related cruises.

Lot's of funk on board the JC's.
Try Steve Ferrone "More Head" and Tower of Power "Soul Vaccination" => two great sounding live albums and very funky. Ferrone really has the Groove and David Garibaldi needs no introduction.

Also try Black Eyed Peas "Vegas to Sydney" DVD - (perhaps there is a live CD I don't know) - the Sydney sessions are exceedingly well recorded and produced by Tal Herzberg...+ their touring drummer is Keith Harris....and he also has the GROOVE ....big time!
