Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

this reminds me that I had better not look in the mirror.

Inna, I don’t know how things work where you are, but here, the politicians who are supposed to work for the people, in reality work for the corporations.

Almost all of the people who are still working, including doctors, who were independent before, now come under some kind of corporate umbrella. Mr. Big orders the corporate head to order the doctor, and that’s how the whip is popped.(But that's another secret that's only used under special circumstances)

As anyone can see, if the corporate heads own the politicians, we the people are screwed. No one is allowed to know this.
If you need to catch up on Ayn Rand, your first mistake was starting to read any of it at all.
The great mystery about Rand's books is whether they're more puerile as fiction or as philosophy.  It's a dead heat.

Lee Morgan / The Procrastinator
Rok is right , everyone should read Rand .
Her many love-letters to Hitler are great.
Sad to Say, Adolf thought she was a nut-job .He should have given her his baby she wanted sooo badly.

Inna, that was a fantastic contribution with very moving music, and song. I would not want to live in that apartment, and I'm sure she doesn't either.

For the last 20 years the standard of living has been declining for the "middle class" here; that means it has been declining all over the world, because much of the world depends on our tourism dollars.

I watched the unveiling of a new "explorer yacht" that was designed for the worst weather possible: it had a big heli-pad, a gym, and a library. While the design prevented it from looking too stylish, it was luxurious on the inside beyond imagination; while most yachts are designed to go from here to there, this small ship was designed for "there", to be the middle of the ocean until the next need for provisions which would be delivered by helicopter. That is the super rich's solution to Covid-19.
Well O-10 , Switzerland is having a sale.
Only 5 million $ fee for new accounts over the lowest amount possible which is only 100 Million $$ . !

Here is an unusual "Monk" when he was at the top of his game. This should be in all Monk fans collections.

I'm not a Monk fanatic, but I got to have this one.

Yeah, I also heard that some rich and super rich have increasingly been buying real estate in New Zealand. It started long before the pandemic. I would do it too if I could. Great getaway, I would much prefer it to being in the middle of the ocean on a super yacht.

For my taste that was the very best song by Gisela Joao. If you wish to listen to more fado try Amalia Rodrigues.

Presently, I prefer to keep my door locked and tell the Covid-19 it can't come in.
Orpheus10, nice soundtrack.
Looks quite good but I am no expert.
What's the current going price ? Oh yes, I don't see audiophile rig there. And how do they defend that thing from pirates ?
At least it makes much more sense to me to have that than golf club and other kinds of nonsense.
Dang O10, you been holding out on us on Monk's "Les Liaisons Dangereuses?"  Some very familiar tunes on here but other tracks I've never heard.
You're like "Felix the Cat" with an endless bag of tricks.
Yeah, OK, before chasing Billie tonight I did run into this pretty funky jazz album by Ivan Boogaloo Joe Jones: "Psychedelic Jazz Guitar."  Nice groove, although I didn't hear much "pyschedelic" - probably just typical marketing for the mid 60's.  Kind of a relief, really.

I never heard of Ivan Boogaloo Joe Jones. His music takes me back to better times, I could listen to it all night, it's got the just right mixture of a lot of different time periods and genres, but all in the "Boogaloo Joe Jones" style.

Wake up Aficionados, it's a new day! I am so tired, it's like being in a mental lockdown just because I'm in a physical lockdown.

Every time I think of someplace to go, I instantly think of 10 reasons not to go; all associated with Covid-19. I got the Covid-19 Blues.
Orpheus, my father is about your age (b.41.) Before the start of all this, he used to walk miles, daily. (pedestrian to the core, never even owned the car) Just recently, for few days he did not leave the house. Nothing wrong with him, he is not beeing sick or anything. Just too much tv news and subsequent feeling of depression. If the weather conditions are not terrible, best thing you can do for yourself is to be active outdoors. The fear is the only thing one should be afraid of.

Keegiam, Bogaloo has more than few good albums, chek him up.Pitty that he didi not played earlier.Posted this before...

Epidemiological situation does not look good and will remain so for now.
People are getting tired even exhausted. I have high tolerance but I feel some of it as well. We are physical beings in addition to social beings. This is unnatural and this is very tough.

Inna, what's called "Low level depression" is almost unavoidable under these present circumstances, and that's for people who are financially, and mentally secure.

Can you imagine what the least fortunate are going through?
I can. I read about them too, though I don't have direct communication with them. I also read and watch British and French news, French in English news, so I get at least distinct outlines of the entire picture.
Very bad. But New Zealand is super class in this respect. They got enough of social problems too, but US and UK are the worst.
I've lived with depression for a very, very long time, but because of that, my meds are well sorted and all this has had very little effect on me.  Finding the right medicine(s) in the right dose(s) can take anywhere from a couple to several years, though.  It's more art than science.  The folks I worry about are those who haven't reached that point, yet.  Every single day can be a devilish roller coaster during that process.

If you know folks with depression -- and you do -- keep an ear out for them.  Keep in touch.  Don't crowd them.  Don't say, "I'm calling to see if you're okay."  Just drop them a friendly little line a little more frequently than you usually might.
memphis, you are right of course. Everyone I know is in quite a bad mood, openly or not really, but you can hear it when you talk to them, even sometimes when talking in writing. They are not necessarily depressed in a full sense of it but yeah, not good.

Our National Anthem is a war song and to American Ears she sung it
very well . And I have heard it thousands of times .

I also have heard Mozart and Opera arias thousands of times as well .

Ditto with all major Jazz  Divas too, Carmen  and Sarah are my favorites .
A little behind today, but I did find that "Boogaloo" Joe Jones was born Ivan Joseph Jones in 1940.

Noting his fairly prodigious output adds to my recognition that I'm not nearly as much of an aficionado as I thought I was a few months ago.  Maybe just more of an interested fan.  Regardless, thanks to all of you here and the amazing archives of studio recordings and live performances at our fingetips, I'm learning a lot and loving the music more than ever.  That's the important part.
I also thought Lady G did a great rendition.  When she first burst on the scene years ago, I was dismissive because she worked so hard at being outrageous.  Somewhere along the line, I realized she was quite a songstress.
If this doesn't   warm the  heart  of  any  American  when the mike failed
in another country . there is something  wrong with them.
