I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.
Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.
The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".
"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.
While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.
Enjoy the music.

Hiromi Uehara - no holds barred in this amazing live performance. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dr98Qt99mN0 |
1960 - Oscar Peterson, John Coltrane, Stan Getz, Paul Chambers, Jimmy Cobb Just plain old cookin'. Yikes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=beCGdmrP8Xc |
Hiromi Uehara - no holds barred in this amazing live performance.keegiam Hiromi is an electrifying presence live in the spot light. I have seen her a couple times at the Blue Note in NYC. To say Miss Uehara is passionate about music is an under statement. I first discovered her remarkable virtuosity when she released "Beyond Standard" back in 2008 and made it a goal to see her with her band at that time, Sonic Bloom. With that goal achieved in 2009 I set about purchasing all of her releases which all get repeated listening’s here. I also saw her with the Trio Project like the clip you posted. Anthony Jackson and Simon Phillips are considered top tier on their respective instruments (I have all of Phillips’ "Protocol" releases). Do yourself a favor and get the Beyond Standard album. I'm an old man who has been listening to jazz for all of his life; that's a long time and a lot of jazz. I've never liked big bands very much, and when jazz sounds too much like "jazz" I can live without it. By that I mean it sounds too much like music that I've heard many many times before; the same old riffs. Any music that I like has to stand repeated listens. Unfortunately, I have some kind of time cutoff, meaning that at some point in time, new jazz began to sound redundant, or I just do not like it. I spent a lot of money on "new jazz" before I discovered this, and discovered at the same time that money was a waste because those records could be used as frisbees. Of course there are exceptions to my disdain for the big band, and Gerry Mulligan is one of them; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2nbtYg8YGA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c0oh_8AE1eA |
pj, thanks for all the info on Hiromi. I have no idea where I'm going to find the time to listen to all the new music I'm finding having joined this forum. Once piece I watched last night but didn't post was a duet with Chick Corea. Chick, being the master and gentleman he is, gave Hiromi plenty or room to do what she does: having a blast letting her virtuosity, talent and joy pour forth no matter what style she's playing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0KmBV1j5UMI Reminds me of something Frogman said about Oscar Peterson a while back: he always looks like he's having fun when he's playing. |
The music I like best, is beautiful music which relates to the human existence; the age old "Human existence"; "Delilah" for example, that's a story that tells of sex, love and betrayal. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GtnpVK1sFvA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rkFSM9Frx3w https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nt_fmhtePoc |
Today's Listen: Lee Morgan -- TOM CAT Great supporting cast. Recorded in 1964, not released until 1981. Rudy Van Gelder remaster in 2005. "Invitation" is a song of seduction, it takes me back to a time when I was much younger and lived this scenario. Music enables me to be a real time traveler. I can see the face in the mirror behind the bar at the bistro under a big floppy black hat, with penetrating eyes and an inviting smile. Although she was only a few bar stools away, and we could have looked directly at one another, there was something intriguing about playing this game in "looking glass land" in the big mirror behind the bar. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyp1yvSBq5I https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5LeuPFt0N84 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bhFC7LB5OXs |
There are so many temptress's in the Bible, besides Delilah, there was "Jezebel", she was one hot mama. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yK3IlV3l9xY But Delilah is still everybody's favorite; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PtDXLHFTCwk |
Today’s Listen: Thelonious Monk -- THE THELONIOUS MONK ORCHESTRA AT TOWN HALL Includes / Donald Byrd(trumpet), Pepper Adams(baritone sax), Charlie Rouse(tenor sax), Phil Woods(alto sax), Sam Jones(bass), Art Taylor(drums) Notes: "The orchestra itself includes a number of top Jazz names, but the members were selected for known ability to interpret Monk’s music and for potential ability to become a solid unit, rather than for individual virtuosity." Just what The Frogman said. Recorded 1959. friday the 13th https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_oS0oU0ThI monk’s mood https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SWQXBeAbZFg little rootie tootie (encore) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Fmrbbv7xEU crepuscule with nellie https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yF8ks-ZTFhw I think this tune is required on all Monk albums. frogman that Betty Carter clip is great. Its a coincidence (is it?) that you posted that because recently I have been listening to a lot of Gerri Allen and I found this interview with her in New Orleans and at the very beginning of it Geri talk a lot about playing for Betty Carter. Geri said that Betty would pay her band to rehearse and was serious about the art of jazz and strived for a cohesive band. Something you and rok have been discussing. Betty talks about Art Blakey as well saying that Art said a successful career in jazz goes hand in hand with longevity. Longevity is something Jack DeJohnette, Dave Holland, Geri Allen and Betty Carter all shared. Geri died from cancer just 1 year after the video. When you have time check out the video. Today's Listen: Thelonious Monk Quartet -- THELONIOUS IN ACTION with / Johnny Griffin(tenor sax), Ahmed Abdul-Maslik(bass), Roy Haynes(drums) Minimal but informative info on Monk and his various groups. Today's Listen: Eric Dolphy Quintet -- OUTWARD BOUND with / Freddie Hubbard(trumpet), Jackie Byard(piano), George Tucker(bass), Roy Haynes(drums) My favorite space traveler, just before takeoff. Tiny, but very good notes by Ron Eyre. Haynes' drumming is described as 'Tasteful.' I wonder why drummers, when being praised, are always said to be 'tasteful'? They always say that about Max Roach. The Queen has to clean, cook and wash. I know, I know, but my maid and both butlers have day off. Modern times and damn human rights. I can't even took off anyone's head in peace, without somebody protesting... Quite annoying. So will get back later to enjoy in the beauty of the music. The last resort of resistance... |
Modern times and damn human rights. I can't even took off anyone's head in peace, without somebody protesting... Ain't that the truth. I can remember back in the good old days when The Queen said "off with their heads," heads rolled. Now just protest and whining about their 'rights'. Being Queen ain't what it used to be. Cheers |
Thanks for the Geri Allen interview clip, pjw. Very good and accurate. She pays her musicians to rehearse (not all leaders do) because it is not only a sign of respect, it is the smart thing to do. If you rehearse a band then the players have no excuse come time to perform. There is a recurring misconception that Jazz players can just show up and play at the highest level without rehearsal or personal practice. Sure, if they are going to play “Cherokee” or “Invitation” for the 1000th time in a loose club setting in the standard way (melody/solos/melody), good players will sound pretty good. However, when they are working with an artist on the level of a Betty Carter and who performs very unusual arrangements of tunes it’s an entirely different story. Very good insights in the clip. |
Ain't that the truth. I can remember back in the good old days when The Queen said "off with their heads," heads rolled. Now just protest and whining about their 'rights'. Being Queen ain't what it used to be. Hard times my dear, hard times. I might reconsider of letting them eat something else besides the cake. :--) Thank you for the music. |
Today’s Listen: Les McCann LTD. -- IN SAN FRANCISCO Nice booklet and photos. Mentions that McCann was the the object of "controversy," omg!!! "...Yet the true story of McCann’s background makes it clear that much of the evidence adduced against him--that his style is a gimmick, his attitude phony and his music consequently invalid--is without justification. There are small jealous minds even in Jazz. I guess his background in the church and gospel music didn’t go over well in the Big Apple. oh, them golden gates https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94K1WKLfwSA big jim https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-e5gyNgB9us jeepers creepers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=47wDTp9joI0 come on and get that church https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UchjBS28AcI taking a chance on love https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oBrETH8jBNs Cheers |

Today's Listen: Frank Morgan -- LOVE, LOST & FOUND All tunes are standards. Great rhythm section. TELARC recording, so you know it's well done. Notes tell a sad tale of drug addition and imprisonment. Morgan was once offered the chair in the Ellington band as a replacement for the departing Johnny Hodges.
