Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

There have been bloody islands in the Mississippi River between St. Louis and Illinois; this was one of them, but not the only one.

Since the station I listen to is on the computer, I never use mine anymore, and that's why they are such a bargain.

My computer is not connected to my rig, so I still use tuners.  I have three of those 'cute' little Sony HD tuners, but one has started acting strange, has to be unplugged for a day or so, every day or so.

Had to bring my Marantz out of the closet, where it has been for 11 years.   Works great.   Tuners are a great source of music for free.

Cheers

This is da blues!

Too many notes. More like rock.

Btw, was the pic of the sax player Wayne Shorter?
No turner is a bargain if it does not pull in what you'd enjoy listening to.

After that, remember to old-timer advice: an average tuner with a good antenna will outperform a good tuner with a poor antenna.

My needs are simple.  I listen to one station, the local college station.  Reception is not a problem, in fact it's great.  Since my Sony is failing, I just looked, and found out that there are not that many tuners available on the market.   Seems it's Yamaha or NAD or used, and the used ones have excellent reputations.   The Sony now sells for three times the original cost.

Thanks for the response.

Cheers

McIntosh is way above my price point for a one station tuner.  But they sure look good.
That is all very beautiful, I am going to listen all songs again. T h a n k you.

Rok, there is no song sadder than that one for me, there are nothing but vacant lots where home use to be. None of the places I called home even exist anymore. The only home is the one in my mind.
Sign of the Times:

All barber shops ordered closed in Texas..  My town, with 36,000 soldiers and their families and even more military retirees, can no longer get their hair cut.  FTW!!

The Governor did declare Gun Stores 'essential', so they remain open.  Maybe he's thinking ahead.   Esp given the beginning signs of 'social unrest' in Southern Italy.   People have no jobs, no money and no food.  Cannot stand for long.

The president may have been on to something when he said the cure cannot be worst than the disease.

Cheers
I used to cut hair to my father. He could go to hairdresser though, but proclaimed once that the hairdresser gave him a very bad cut by making his ears bigger than they were. In his opinion, I was cutting hair better. I told him that if he could bear the risk of losing at least one ear, than we were good to go. He agreed and I started long career as the family hairdresser.

You know, the difference between good and bad hairdresser is one week only.

When I think of Romina and Al Bano, I always hear this  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pdFXexNORZk

The song had huge commercial success and was sold in millions of copies worldwide...
On more light note, album of a bass player.
Sam Jones 'The soul society', from 1960. great line up...N.Addereley,M itchell, Heath, Timmons

Very short after that session, Sam Jones plays on album 'The sound of wide open spaces'   the debut album by saxophonist/flautis James Clay made together with David Fathead Newman and they play one song featured on both albums, 'Some kinda mean' which starts here around 19th min. Here is that album as well

Yeah, but Liberta is much better. Not to mention video.
 But she can't really dance..
Very educative:

It might be helpful in these days when we wish to or plan to turn to domestic food production.

While I have many albums in my collection by both Ike Quebec and Grant Green, Dodo Greene is new to me.

Dodo Greene was born in Buffalo, New York in 1924 and began singing at an early age before being given the opportunity to fill-in as a vocalist for Cozy Cole's band which led her to pursue a career in music.

She signed to Blue Note in 1962, becoming the first female vocalist released on that label, but after only one album, "My Hour of Need", did not release another record.

The word "soul" is used a lot in jazz, but when discussing the voice and singing of Dodo Greene, that is the only word that's applicable, that's because I can feel to the depths of my soul when she sings "My Hour of Need";

More bass clarinet...
@orpheus10 , you might enjoy the introductory solo on this track...the entire track, for that matter.

@frogman , I did check out Bennie Maupin's Penumbra.  I like the atmospheric sonics (good percussion).  Recording quality is superb...I expect that's part and parcel of the Cryptogramophone label.  Musically it's a challenging listen...kinda sparse and abstract.  Maybe not  always angular and jarring like Dolphy can be, though no one would accuse Level Three (track 3) of being a commercial sellout.  :-)  I do have a feeling I'll be revisiting.  Maybe it will open up.

Ghosthouse, I like your attitude; keeping an open mind to the possibility that there might be something there that we just don’t get yet, before making final judgment . For me, that’s true respect for the music. Loved the Bruford clip with Tim Garland on bass clarinet. Thanks for that! Garland sounds great on bass clarinet; very good tenor player also.
Thanks for the encouragement, Frogman.  Auden writes about young aspiring poets finding "mentors".  There have been some for music in this thread.  I hope to ever be the student, until the day we are no longer "vertical and ventilating".

Tim Garland is also featured in the Chick Corea/The Vigil "Planet Chia" clip I posted previously. Soprano sax in that.  What great tone.
I guess with this lockdown, everybody could have more time on the hand, so here is the link with free access to 50 concerts to stream from Montreux jazz festivals. Note, not that much jazz, but still it might be interesting...

I am going out every day, avoiding people, ha, but I feel much better after a training session outdoors. We are fortunate that nature is all around us, so lots of places to go and be alone, more or less. But, hope that all this will stop sooner than later....
