I am purchasing an Innuos Zen MK3 with 1TB. Will be streaming QoBuz and ripping CDs Qobuz doesn’t have, mostly extras from box sets and live sets. I will be using the Innuos app controlling the unit from my iPad. Please share any tips or tricks you’ve learned from running a similar setup. For example, settings for ripping CDs etc.
I have the same streamer. Setup was very simple. I don't recall anything special, but my memory sucks and that was months ago.
You can set the ripper to automatically rip a CD when it's inserted, or do it manually. I let it do it automatically. Pop in a CD and around 5 minutes later, it pops out and it's done. Pretty slick. Before I got the Innuos, I tried ripping software on a laptop and never got consistent results.
Note the cautions, and don’t mess with it if you don’t know what you are doing. Some of the config has no effect as far as I can tell. For example, LMS provides support for accessing the Live Music Archive (Deadhead ears perk up), but enabling it does not make it appear as a feature in the Sense app. I wish it did.
“settings for ripping CDs”
It depends on your priorities. Do you have lot of CD’s to rip? Are you able to discern differences between WAC vs FLAC?
I have upto 16TB of space, so my entire library of CD’s are in WAV. To my ears, WAV files sounds slightly better than FLAC. Even though most people cannot tell a difference between FLAC vs WAV, FLAC is a compressed file and uses more processing power to decompress whereas WAV is technically a perfect copy of the original audio file…zero compression.
I have only ripped to Apple Music back when I had my iPod (those were the days). I assume WAC sounds better but takes up more storage space. I will go with WAC to maximize the sound quality. Thanks.
@jayrossi13Thanks for the tip. I’m running in low latency and no issues, so far. I could swear there is a bit more clarity now. I’m listening to Carolin No - Carolin No and I seem to be hearing more detail. Maybe it’s the coffee.
If you haven’t heard Carolin No, check it out. It’s on Qobuz.
@chemarceloGotta give credit to @jayrossi13. The latency setting idea that was posted in the Innuos forum was posted by a co-founder of Innuos, so it's pretty credible.
Carolin No is awesome. You might also like Angus and Julia Stone.
Anyone know if the sense app will stream 'similar songs' after your playlist is over? I have Roon, which does do that, and currently use Sense. Just miss discovering new music when I had that feature.
I hooked up my Zen. Bought it used for 1/2 price in really good condition from a great local dealer. Set it to low latency and I’m noticing right away more detail and more separation of instruments in the soundstage. It’s also incredibly quiet which is noticeable. So far so good.
I spent a good amount of time listening last night and one of the other improvements for me is the Sense app and connectivity compared to BluOs and my Node N130. Even with a wired Ethernet connection the BluOs would drop the connection from time to time. I could continue playing what was cued up but it would pop up saying it was unable to find a connection. Using the same Ethernet cable the Sense app is lightning quick and I haven’t lost connection after hours of use. Very happy so far and I haven’t even ripped any CDs yet. It will keep me busy this winter. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a streamer. Thanks for all the comments.
The Innuos has a large buffer. I used to have trouble because my internet tends to drop at times. You can literally unhook the ethernet cable during playback and it keeps playing.
I need to do more listening with the two buffer settings. I'm breaking in my new dac, so there's that going on as well. You should try both and see what you like in your system.
Thanks. I would be interested in your feedback about any difference with the settings. I have A/B tested the 2 settings on a few well known tracks and don’t notice any significant difference so far.
Initially, I felt that there was a bit of additional detail and clarity with the first few songs that I played (on low latency). After extended listening, I felt that the music had lost some fullness. Thinner, I guess. Some upper frequencies were a bit too sharp for my preference. In my system. My dac, cables, etc.
I did a lot of listening last night and it sounds great on normal. I've read that some people prefer low latency.
First of all, congratulations: Innuos products are reliable, with great customer support and sound great!
A small group of my friends and I have been using various Innuos products for years including: Zen mini w LPS power supply, zenith SE and Statement Next Gen. I have actually re-ripped my entire CD collection after an initial import from an Aurender (all originally lossless apple files) re-ripped as WAV files using the Zenith. I also run a separate Roon Nucleus + and have a large NAS and have something like 8 TB of files (flac, WAV, DSD, and many, many high resolution files). We all use QoBuz but I have had Tidal as well in the past. I later re-ripped again all my CDs with Zenith into .flac files due to a great deal of experimenting and comparing. Following are results that all of us share in common:
1. Innuos Sense sounds better than Roon, in any of it’s formats (although Roon is at it’s best when files are upsampled to DSD) whether played direcly into dacs through USB or using Innuos as Roon endpoint. It is not necessarily a huge difference but we all find it to be significant and therefore choose Sense. (I am fortunate as with the Nucleus I can run both platforms and gain all of the user interface benefits of Roon, but I do all serious listening through Sense).
2. On all of our systems, apple files sound slightly inferior to either .wav or .flac files. .aiff is noticeably better than.ALAC.
3. .flac files generally sound slightly better than .wav files. We feel that the Innuos platform is optimized for .flac. Additionally you save about 30% of disc space due to lossless compression. Since I have the NAS with near unlimited storage space, I don’t care about this, however the improvement in .flac sound quality over .wav was significant enough for me to re-rip over 500 CDs!… for the 4th time! Ugh!!!
4. Files coming in from NAS storage actually slightly outperforms files stored locally on the Innuos. Note that all of us have audiophile level switches and most of us are running separate linear power supplies for NAS and switches and using top of the line ethernet cables to “feed” the Innuos (I am using jcat m12 gold, others are using Nordost QNet with QSource power supplies) so if you don’t have all of these tweaks I don’t know if you will have same experience. It appears that removing the processing power of running the internal hard drives ever so slightly improves the Innuos’ sound.
5. QoBuz sounds slightly better than same file types on Tidal. This difference is small and not 100% across the board but is consistent enough that most of us discontinued Tidal. Crazy as this sounds generally QoBuz sounds as good and sometimes even better than locally stored (internally or on NAS) stored files. This is not 100% of the time and sometimes even varies on same music.
6. DSD files almost always sound better than any other format: streamed, Roon, local or otherwise.
In summary, I encourage you to do some comparing yourself but my recommendation would be to save the file space and rip files as lossless .flac for all of Innuos products. Good luck and have fun! I hope you get as much enjoyment out of your Innuos products as I have and I hope this experience is helpful to others.
Take time to try isolation under the chassis, I have found that makes a positive difference. Also, 100% agree with comments about the Sense app sounding better than Roon.
@bassbuyerIf you look at the rear panel of the Zen Mini Mk3 you will see the DC inlet accepts 9-24v.
I have it on good authority that, if everything else were to stay the same, simply turning up the wick to provide a higher DC input voltage will run the circuitry in its sweet spot.
The stock wall wart produces 12v.
The Zen LPSU produces 16v.
Innuos would doubtless argue that a warranty is invalid if you use anything other than one of their PSUs (even a 12v or 16v from another manufacturer) but loads of people do.
I actually run mine with a customised LPSU producing around 21v ie. with around 10% safety margin, though one would imagine the 24v stated on the rear panel also has a margin of error of its own on top of that. It doesn't run physically hot at 21v ! My combo has been on 24/7 for over a year and continues to deilver faultless service and smiles.
This might be for further down the line but I thought I would share a potential upgrade path for you.
I am hoping for some help and perhaps (hint hint) @psnyder149 can chime in with his and his small group of friends experiences with Innuos. I favor details over generalities so I apologize for providing perhaps too many details.
I bought used from here an Innuos ZEN MK3 ripper/streamer and I indeed immediately preferred the sound over that of my previous Bluesound Node and an iFi Neo Stream. I ripped all my CDs into .flac files and used my Roon to search for them and back them up to my under-utilized Roon Nucleus, and then also to my Synology NAS. But then trouble in paradise.
My setup has gone quiet (not even a hum at high volume).
The current setup is as follows:
1) Innuos ZEN MK3 music streamer, to the Laiv uDDC, via USB
2) uDDC, to Laiv DAC, via HDMI
3) Laiv DAC, to Laiv HP2A headphone/preamp, via XLR
4) Laiv HP2A to McIntosh MA252, via XLR
It worked great until last night when the right channel got reduced in sound level. Today there are no sounds at all.
The DAC appears to be processing a signal – when I unplug the USB from the DDC it immediately says no signal and when I plug the USB back in it goes back to what looks like a connected status.
Testing so far
A) MA252 does have sound from phono input (so the Amp works)
B) When I play a record, the sound is centered perfectly (balance is now OK)C) Using the streamer, there is no apparent HP2A output to headphones (using 4 pin connection) or to the amp/speakers; speakers remain dead quiet when MA252 is turned up to 100 (I did not change -40dB on the HP2A yet)D) However, a quiet crackling sound in the speakers is heard when I click from headphones to speakers using the Mode Selector on the HP2A – so there is a connection thereE) When I bypass the uDDC and connect the USB straight to the DAC, it still appears to have a signal and still no soundF) I connected my turntable to the HP2A via the LExt-phono and sound is good. So is headphone output.G) I replaced the streamer with a Bluesound Node and sent the signal to the DAC (using optical and coaxial signals), and later to the DAC via the DDC (using the coaxial) and initially I got no sound, making me think that the DAC was the problem.H) However, after initially setting up the Bluesound Node and getting no sound, when I was moving components around the sound suddenly started playing, convincing me that I had either jostled a loose connection into place or done something as simple as un-muting the HP2A. However, when I returned to the original setup, it again appeared to be working (DAC sees a signal) but no sound again is coming out. (Specifically I was pulling the LExt forward to disconnect it and I bumped the DAC and the HP2A at the same time (they are side by side).
It appears that the issue is either the Streamer (I hard-rebooted it but I have not tried to send its signal to another device), the USB input, or possibly the USB cable (I swapped it but perhaps two cables in my house are bad?). There is only a USB output from the Innuos and there is still the puzzle of the DAC seeming to have a signal in-coming. I do not have a USB output from the Bluesound or my iFi Neo Stream to do an “apples to apples” comparison to check the USB input on the DDC or DAC with those devices. The system makes sound when the Bluesound is connected via optical or Coaxial connections to the DAC.
Finally, when this initially started, I had just connected QoBuz connect to the Innuos streamer and wondered if having done that was somehow causing a problem. I opened QoBuz and tried to play a song and when I tried to play QoBuz connect, the music displayed on my phone scrolled rapidly from song to song, and then it gave me an error message that the streamer was not working. QoBuz signal sent to my cell phone speaker played. When I opened the Innuos Sense app, it appeared to behave as if it was playing just fine (though no sound came out).
I will first be sure that I have properly backed up my Innuos and save all the ripped music and perhaps try a factory reset. I bought it used so they might help me get it fixed with advice but no warranty.
So, does this ring a bell with anyone? Is the change in sound that is coincidental with my attempts to get QoBuz Connect to work (restarting the MK3 and source and setting it up, etc) have any possible connection? Finally I am uncertain if I could take a USB-A to A cord and send the output to my Node just to see if music is coming out that way (I think I can use a node as a DAC only).
@timothy468Tim, I run a similar set up to yours. Zen MK 3 > uDDC > Denafrips t2. I also run a USB cable out of my Zen MK 3 via streamer out to my Bluesound Node Lan USB input, so as to avoid Bluetooth on the Node. All works great, but I did notice the USB out on the Zen MK 3 can be touchy and the signal will drop if the cables aren’t secured properly, seems the connection port on the Zen is a little bit loose when trying to secure the cables. I’ve heard of this from other Zen MK 3 users, but getting the cables situated properly, all connections work fine. Not sure if this helps you, but it’s been my experience. I can sense your frustration, I’ve been there. Good luck, I would also highly recommend the innuos zen MK 3, it’s a great streamer.
After a few bruised knuckles, trying to check every connection, and absolutely determining that there is sound output appearing to come out of the streamer I went back to the software.
So, what I have found is that when I tried to set up QoBuz Connect it appears to take over the Innuos Sense app. Even though I had paused the QoBuz app and then even stopped in entirely and closed the app, it still had preemptively taken over the Innuos Sense app - so my Sense songs did not play. Why?
Because when I reopened QC and looked at my current selected song, and then looked at the “selected output” (the DAC) it was muted!
Arrggh.
As soon as it was unmuted in QC all was good.
So be careful to check that your output with QoBuz Connect is not muted so when you go back to just your Innuos library the songs can be heard!
Thanks for sharing. Glad you’re back up and running right. I tried using Qobuz Connect with my Zen and it will only play Hi-Res songs. It sees the non-Hi-Res songs but skips over them. I contacted Qobuz and Innuos. After trying all of Qobuz’s suggested fixes it Looks like a software glitch with Qobuz. After spending time and dealing with the frustration I am back to running Qobuz through the Sense app and all is well. I had similar issues with songs supposedly playing but no sound etc. Switching between the 2 Ops So I will leave well enough alone until a fix is found.
YOU NEED A LINEAR POWER SUPPLY TO YOUR ROUTER ,DIGITAL IS NOT GROUNDED I BOUGHT A LINEAR TUBE AUDIO LPS AND COMES WOTH A EXCELLENT DC CABLEB USE A DECENT POWER CORD , AND YOUR ETHERNET HUB , AT MINIMUM A $600 SB-6 ETHERNET HUB ,
GOOD POWER CORDS GIVE YOU MUCH BETTER ISOLATION AND RESOLUTION LINNE CONDITIONER ALSO , I USE A AQ NIAGRA 3000
looking to buy the 5000 soon though a upgraded Ethernet hub ,is on my short list.
I got a 6A Ethernet cable made to length and tested with the results included from Blue Jeans cable and a USB cable from Pine Tree Audio. Excellent cables reasonably priced.
So the secret hiding place for an inadvertently muted system in the QoBuz Connect setup is in the server selection page. When you click on a song, at the very bottom of the page underneath the Play icon is a view of the device it is playing on. If you clicik on it, it takes you to the "Selected Device" page on your phone app (I am using an iPhone). And at the very bottom of the page is a sound bar for the volume and a mute button which one does not usually use, I bet, since we have other ways to modulate the volume. Look there is your sound is wonky. I attached an image of the screen grab to demonstrate. Othe glitches with QoBuz Connect so far are leading me to simply playing the app through Sense as I did before.
